RE: Camping pet peeve

Anything can be solved by someone just coming over and asking nicely. We accidently cut through a neighbor's corner because we had friends a site over. When he pointed it out, we didn't do it again. Unfortunately, he was rude about it. We've put out our campfires before when asked by the neighbors. But when they in turn light up a cigarette next to our rig... really? Alot of this is just common sense - which unfortunately not everyone seems to have...

RE: Problems with bears and cougars....

Bears, racoons, skunk and coyotes... yes. Mostly coyotes when boondocking in AZ. They discover our dog and spend their time trying to lure her into a wash. Very clever animals. Bears used to visit us in Lake Tahoe area. Racoons at the beach and skunk there also. Last year, the dog grabbed a wandering skunk from under the 5er. It was not a pleasant end to the evening.

Medicare question...opinions please

Trying to sort this all out. Signed up DH aunt for a medicare supplement as she never bothered... and she didn't bother to signup for the prescription requirement back in 06 since until recently she refused to take any drugs. SO.. her rates are $120 a month now verse just having plain medicare A and B. Now the penalty for the drug coverage would be the same even if she was just plain medicare and a plan D... the difference is the UnitedHealth care supplement (she has a local doctor I didn't want to give up). She's 82, not well-off.. and we are trying to budget her money. Her health is not wonderful - bad back mostly and an addiction to vodka and cigs. So.. now there's a copay for doctor... small copay for prescrptions (she doesn't have very many)... It seems the best option for paying for longer hospital care should she need it. (she was in the hospital Feb and March) The bills are still rolling in - but her copays seem fairly small so far. Not that I can do anything until this fall... but wondering if I made a bad decision about all of this. It's SO complicated..

RE: Looking for Restaurants in the Reno/Tahoe Area

If you like sushi... Sushi Pier - it's just up from the casinos - was wonderful... and has a great "all you can eat" option which includes nearly the entire menu. (not a buffet - all fresh made)

solitude by Grand Design

Found a floorplan we love... Anyone know anything about these? The only thing didn't like was the cheap tires but everything else seemed pretty well made. But would miss our large tank sizes, 6 batteries, inverter, solar panel and charging system.... But might be worth the change for automatic leveling. Hard to find a unit that's like our Alpie... even though its had issues too.

RE: DRV vs Excel

We love them both and would love to have a Mobile Suites. They are just too heavy for our truck and we're not going to upgrade just yet. Even the shorter ones were 18,000 lbs.

RE: RZR

The only thing I could add would be get the EPS... I'm the DW and I LOVE my EPS. Also, love my 800... Just realized haven't changed our signature. The current rzr is a 2010.

RE: Landing gear is toast

It's a binding leg which had to be removed. Not an easy job. For starters, the leg is longer than the distance from the trailer to the ground while on the truck. Hmm... the repair guys solution was to position the leg over a shallow culvert and it took some pounding to get it out. It was messed up apparently resulting in the motor shearing off the leg. For the time being, the truck is permanently attached to the rig now and we'll move it around the neighborhood. We'd use the bottlejack to get if off the truck in storage, but our particular spot is very unlevel with the nose of the trailer pointing down requiring height to get it off the truck. Since bad luck seems to be our friend right now, it doesn't seem like a wise idea to attempt offloading under that condition with visions of it coming off the jack due to the height. Maybe... just maybe the part will be in early next week.

Landing gear is toast

The right landing gear has been cranky for awhile and we have an appointment to get it replaced. But it couldn't wait. We've been both using the switch and crank at the same time. This time it sheared off completely leaving us without anyway of raising it for the truck. Luckily, we carry a bottle jack and managed to raise it enough to hitch up. But now of course, there's no way to get the truck off. Sooo, we'll take the entire parade to the repair place and let them deal with it. Things like this make a new rig very appealing.

place to get axles checked/aligned near Sacramento?

Probably have something fishy with the front axle. Tires just don't seem to last very long. Yep, they aren't the best variety usually whatever Les Schwab has... Although now we've got two Goodyear Marathon which seem to be better, but on again is showing some wear along outside edge.. The axles were replaced a couple of years ago... and we have our frame beefed up at the axles which did slow down the issue - just didn't solve it. SOOO... can't seem to find a shop in our area. Anyone have any suggestions?

Question on kayaks

Thinking about getting a kayak - looking at a used Hobie Oasis today tandem. The DH is a big guy... 280, 6-5... We tested a different 2-seat kayak last year and when he sat in the back, he tended to influence the boat direction too much. When he sat in the front, the bow was too low. Anyone with a hobie? They are more expensive... Any opinions of whether it will work for us?

RE: new tv or fixing up the old one...

DH heard that bigger exhaust was better on the engine. We've added a pak brake and larger pan for the transmission to hold more fluid to keep it cool...Recently put new shocks and tires on it. In a perfect world, we'd like a different bed - sort of like a utility. He also doesn't like the fact that it travels a bit nose down without a load. But as far as we know there is nothing wrong with it. I'm leaning toward keeping it and avoiding the siren call of a new truck. For me anyway, the siren call of a new 5er is stronger. Luckily, everything I like is too heavy.

new tv or fixing up the old one...

The 03 only has 80,000 on it... DH is thinking about just doing some stuff to it such as bigger exhaust, larger brakes, etc... Even if all that costs $$ it is still less expensive than a new one or a newer version. We are looking at a 2010 version of what we have... but it's nearly $48,000... It's not that we can't upgrade, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.. so guess we are looking for ideas.

RE: Fallen in love with a Carri-lite

Yes, I love the carriage... but do I love it enough to go into more debt? Probably not. Rather use that money to travel. And we'd need to get a newer tow vehicle. DH still wants to take his firewood. We do really like the basic design of our Alpie.. even with its issues. Would change the L galley design (look out if there's more than one cook in the kitchen) And we had the frame welded at the axles due to spider cracks (Lippert did it free)... But it's got great for boondocking which we do often. Big tanks, lots (6) batteries, solar, and an inverter... So at least for the time being... the carriage is only a dream I guess. On a side note... we've looked at all the new brands - Redwood, Lifestyle, Trilogy, something called a solitude.. They all had wonderful bling and some great ideas. Construction itself wasn't that much improved. veebyres... I remembered you did something to your electronic dump valves... We've been having an issue with our black tank. It might be the rocker switch.. but often we have to change out the fuse to make it open. What did you do?

RE: Fallen in love with a Carri-lite

yep... and anything above requires a noncommercial Class A... which includes a driving test. It's the non-commercial class A which is the issue.. not the endorsement. And yes, the duelly would be undersized for the rig.

Fallen in love with a Carri-lite

It's a 2011... 36SBQ...Haven't looked up the figures yet, but sure it's heavier than our Alpie. Sure is nice... But of course, here in the great state of CA... mite require an upgrade in driver license. We are just at the legal weight now. But it's nice to dream...

RE: Cranky landing gear

It's not the batteries... We've got 6 - 6volts and they are fully charged... Hmm... didn't think about the connections..

Cranky landing gear

On battery, both move SLOWLY and sound like they are ancient, but they do move. The right one however, stops when it gets tall and we have to hand crank to help it up. This is under a load and pushing up. We have a feeling that the leg must be bent but doesn't look it. We had the gear replaced but it didn't help. Repair guy said the motor seemed to be fine... But if the motors are fine, why do they seem to barely move to raise the trailer and sound so tired? Do the motors simply slow down in old age or do they just stop?
