RE: Dish 1000.2

Yes - I understand and agree that 233 is where you point the dish. Question is what is the actual location of the 129W bird? From my current location N33 27.164 W86 08.053: 110W is Elevation 43.4 Azimuth 218.8 119W is Elevation 37.6 Azimuth 229.5 and the 129W bird is where? And where do you find that information?

RE: Fresh Water Tank Won't Fill

I once found that mud-daubers had plugged my vent and caused the same effect. X2

RE: Dish 1000.2

Thanks for your comments. Hello moved around twice - On transponder 11, now have signal strength of 70 on 110W and 54 on 119W. Considerably better numbers than in the dark last night. But still no 129W. I guess it is behind trees. No one addressed addressed the azmith elevation question on 129. I'm not sure where it is. Regarding Direct - not an option for me as I actually have a stick house in an Alabama county with an Atlanta DMA. To change to Direct means I have to get Atlanta for 6 lousy months, then "move" to the Birmingham DMA where dish thinks I live. However, Direct service is already at that address and the FCC DMA cops then go crazy. Also, this afternoon the RV next door had more trouble getting Direct dialed in the first time than I had with moving dish around twice. We travel around quite a bit and I got Dish 1000.2 in both Maine and New Hampshire as well as Oregon & California.

Dish 1000.2

After third try in trees last night I have low signal strength as follows (110W - 20; 119W – 24; 129W – 0) I do not have a smart phone – thus not their application. I am trying to shoot through hole in trees. I use web site - www.dishpointer.com to get information which is Elevation 37.6; Skew 129.4 and Azimuth 233. My current location in zip 35160 is near GPS coordinates N33 27.164 W86 08.053. I normally cover 110 & 129 with foil and then tweak 119 but that was best I could get. The issue is 129 I have zero signal which means virtually no HD nor the locals. Also, low signal on both 110 & 119 which means will loose signal in rain coming this Thursday. Questions for you guru’s 1) What is the actual magnetic Azimuth from my location for the 129W? 2) 2) At what elevation are the three satellites actually in the sky? Not the dish set-up elevation but exactly where is the signal coming in? Trying to figure out which way to try and move around in hole to get better reception. Check back here tonight @ 5. Someone out there will have good information!

RE: Finding a well-built rig

Yes New horizons, Excel, Mobile suites aqre all high end full time units. Montanna, Alpine, Big Horn, Jayco's Pinnacle etc are all high end consumer grade units. And yes, many RV'ers live in them full time but no way do they have the overall quality build of the above units. Whatever you buy, make sure you have enough truck to handle. Also, research your axles and tires versus your trailer weight to ensure you have an adequate cushion weight. Overloaded trucks and trailer axles lead to on the road issues that are not plesant to deal with!

RE: AARP Roadside Assistance

I won't go into the political side of AARP, but lets say IMHO they done everything they could to HURT seniors.... I got good sam's roadside protection - 3 yrs was cheap ! X5 And as a senior - I quit them 5 yrs ago, refuse to pay their dues or anything to support them. Their politics is nowhere close to mine - They do not represent me.

RE: GPS app that can accept pre-made routings

Did the Garmin tech tell you that the route would get changed if you used Garmin's Map Source program to modify the route or only if you used one of the other products you mentioned and then downloaded it into the Garmin? As long as the map version in Map Source and the Garmin are the same release and you have all the settings the same (fastest vs. shortest, bus truck or car, etc.) and you download the route and the "force point" way points that you created, both routes should be the same. That's the purpose of Map Source. I do this all the time on Map Source and then upload the route to my Garmin Nuva. Then make sure you select the route to follow uploaded from your PC. Do not allow your GPS to recalculate the route! If you allow it to recalculate, why go to the trouble of building the route in the PC?

RE: road route from Massachusetts to Florida

We make this trip every year from west of Boston. Mass Pike to 84 to 81,77 to 26 to 95 to rt 4. Hope this helps. This is the best route. Done it several times. Minimmum tolls and you miss most all the heavy traffic along I-95 corridor costing time.

RE: Buying first FW, A/C choices

No one mentioned the other important factor - insulation. The artic packages carry extra insulation which reduce the AC load making your AC more efficient. Would never a buy a unit without 2 AC's AND the artic package!

RE: converting trailer to goose neck

Camping World and many other RV retail outlets sell gooseneck adapters. http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/15-gooseneck-extension/21064 My 2011 F250 came with factory gooseneck ball. Has pull lever to release and turn over ball making truck bed flat. Is a little harder to to hookup than 5th but frees bunch of bed space.

RE: Tow vehicle

Geeze comeon fellas a new F150 ecoboost is all he needs. I think the new Tundra might even handle it. ;-) Lyle What about a Ford Ranger?

RE: Towing Resistance

Wind resistance when towing is a major factor. I get better mileage towing my 11,000# fiver than I did with my 5500# Jayco TT. It was like pulling box down the highway. In order to actually measure wind resistance, you'd need a wind tunnel. It would be nice to compare Drag coficiency of RV's. I went from a 29 foot 7,500 lb box TT to a 11,500 LB Jayco Designer and my towing mileage in the same F250 7.3 diesel truck went from low 10 to 11.44 MPG. Towed same speed. Aero very important!

RE: Advice on switching from Type A MoHo to Fiver

I have several friends who have gone from 5th to MH and MH to 5th. Most say the driving experience down the road of a 5th is better, quiter, more stable. Backing and turning, as mentioned above, is different and will require you adjusting your thought process. Make wider turns and slower response in backing.

RE: Safety Chains

The reason for chains - its the law! Are safety chains really necessary? Forty-six states require safety chains on tag-along trailers and 29 of those states also require them on gooseneck trailers. The remaining states strongly recommend safety chains. The safety chains should be attached to the frame of the vehicle or to the frame-mounted hitch. They should be crossed underneath to catch the trailer in a sort of cradle if the trailer comes off the ball. The chains should not touch the ground and they should be long enough to allow the trailer to turn corners without pulling. Trailers do come off, especially if they have not been properly hitched or if equipment fails. Don't take a chance - use safety chains! Ya, but you're talking to a 5th wheel forum, the one group of trailers that don't require safety chaing, so why the harsh lecture? Save it for the TTs FYI - answering the very first question which was: "I saw a goose neck trailer yesterday with safety chains hanging from it and it made me wonder why they are not used on 5th wheels? I towed a travel trailer for over 40 years and they were required. " I converted my 5th to goose neck and researched the law as I had also seen goose necks w/safety chains. And yes, I have safety chains on my 5th converted to goose neck.

RE: Clarify to prevent freezing

I do have the enclosed underbelly, so i'll probably throw a small space heater in the pass through storage as well to help. Wonderful! You are good as long as you run your furnace at night. Someone also mentioned a 100 watt bulb - the big thing is keep the holes plugged and just a little heat will keep things from freezing. You just want the house to be toasty, not the underbelly. Regarding skirting - go to building supply and inquire about mobile home type underskirting. Again, all you want to do is stop the air flow.

RE: Clarify to prevent freezing

I have never seen this Crossroads unit so I went nozing around their web site. Certainly a nice looking unit. But ..... I see it is a light weight unit AND an ENCLOSED UNDERBELLY is an option! Also no mention on the web of "polar/artic/cold weather package or being a unit ready for winter camping." Did you buy that option or are your tanks exposed to the elements? Get out and look underneath. If your tanks are exposed, 25 degrees is cold, can and will freeze depending upon how many hours below freezing. A little colder and you have a major problem solving opportunity! If you have the enclosed underbelly and run your furnace, you are probably good down to 18-20. If your unit, in fact, has a factory cold weather package then you are good below that, as long as you run your furnace. Space heaters save propane but .... do nothing in the underbelly where your water supply/storage is located! Good luck.

RE: Good Sam ERS

I have had ERS about 6-8 years, never used it and hope I never do. I have had 2 blowouts on RV and both times was right before exit and was able to limp in and get the repair. I have mine set up to auto renew and they hit the CC with the $$. Good to see the good recent reports.

RE: Talladega Superspeedway

Be aware that the speedway also offers free camping. Northpark, Southpark and West Park C are all free camping. Requires race tickets for entrance. They open Monday/Tuesday prior to Sunday race. The speedway also offfers lots of "pay" camping. Their web site is: http://www.talladegasuperspeedway.com/Camping/Camping.aspx

RE: Dometic refer ?

If you have good batteries, your jack should work in the morning. Need to check and make sure all lights are off. If your RV has lights in storage bins, make sure they are off. Also, if jacks won't work, plug into your truck, leave it running 5 minutes or so to put a little charge back in the battery and then your jack should work off power supply from truck.
