RE: Can you do this with a thunb drive?

OP here
Thanks for all the good info. I thought I knew the simple answer but some of you have added to my knowlege base. Even though I'm not a gamer it's good to know that things like that need to be taken into consideration. Also that installing from a thumb drive isn't nesseserly the same as from a disk.
I have most of the stuff that I need to do what you recommend such as external HD and CD/DVD drives I just wanted to know all of my options.
Buy the way anything I copy is for my own personal backup. I don't share these.
Thanks again

RE: Can you do this with a thunb drive?

The programs I'm thinking of aren't copy protected, they use a product code to open them. I've already made backup copies so I know that part can be done.

Can you do this with a thunb drive?

I know I could just try this and find out for myself but where's the fun in that since we're all here to share information.
OK my question is can I take a program that is on a cd/dvd such as Street Atlas or Photoshop and copy it to a thumb drive to be installed later. We spend 3 months at a time away from home and on one trip my computer died so I thought this would be a handy way to carry a backup.

RE: IEEE 1394 thing of the past?

It is confusing. Papajohns site did have something about USB 2 import in another section but I didn't notice the publish dates and we know how these things. As I said above MY camera was not detected. I'll check elsewhere to see if there are drivers that might help.
By the way the real Papa John lives about 2 miles from me. On the right side of the tracks.

RE: Stop e-mail large file downloads

90% of the time if an email is sent to me from friends and family that starts with FW. it gets deleted. I don't forword those cute/funny or political emails to them and I don't like recieving them. I feel like people are getting lazy when the only they hvae to stay in touch is to make a few clicks of the mouse and flood all of there recpients mail boxes. I'm not trying to sound too grouchy about it but I much rather someone sit down and write ME.
Don't mean the high the thread
Now I need to go look for my flame proof suit

RE: IEEE 1394 thing of the past?

When I attached my 3 year old, I think, Canon Elura 85 to the Vista laptop via USB 2 I got a window that said no compatible camera was found. Other cameras/drivers might react differently.
Windows 7 is a whole different thing. From what I read is that it comes without WMM. If you want it you have to have Windows Live and it becomes WLMM

RE: IEEE 1394 thing of the past?

Are you saying that your mini-DV camcorder also has a USB 2.0 port?
Yes my DV has a mini USB too but according to Papajohn.org web site windows moviemaker requires import using firewire. That is how I did it in the past. Now I have windows vista MM 6.0 with the tutorial saying I can use USB 2 also to import. This has me confused since papajohn seems to be the Movie Maker expert. I just now renewed my intrested of editing my home videos and I see in two years I have fallen behind the curve. I have to relearn this stuff.
I confirmed that the USB on my corder is for transferring still shots to a computer or printer.

RE: IEEE 1394 thing of the past?

OP here
Yes in looking around I see they are not compatible. The rub is that my old laptop had the PC slot and the newer one has no slots at all. I wanted to edit video from a mini dv camcorder into windows moviemaker and that requires a firewire connection. It had slipped my mind that I used a PCMI adapter to do that some two years ago. Maby some other software will let me capture video with USB.

The firewire to USB above is close but I need the small 4 pin one. I'll go looking for it.
Thanks

IEEE 1394 thing of the past?

I bought a HP Pavillion Entertainment laptop last year and only just now noticed it dosen't have a firewire input. It has HDMI eSATA USB and more. Now I wanted to edit some video from my Mini DV, something I have done on my previous laptop. Is there a new cable that will convert DV out from the camcorder to something else on the computer?

RE: Need Help - Traveling from Denver to Moab Ut

Being a flat lander myself I found my first trip taking this route was something that got my attention. I got used to it while spending 2 weeks in the mountains, including the "Million Dollar HWY" to Silverton. My white knuckled DW never got used to it. My favorite Tshirt from CO says "Real men don't need gaurd rails"

Memphis, what to see, where to stay

Our friends from Ontario decided on the spur on the moment to take a trip to the southwest. They would like to stop near Memphis on the way to check out the music and food but don't yet have maps and brochures. They travel in a class A DP w/toad. Where would be a good place to camp for a few days in the area. I once read a nice commet about Tom Sawyer in West Memphis. Do you agree? Or is their somthing closer like Graceland that is safe.

RE: Another scam warning

Their is an old movie called "The Flim Flam Man". The primus is that the person/victum agreeing to a deal "to good to be true" isn't really a victum and deserves to be scammed. I don't agree but it is something I always think about when I hear of a great deal.

RE: Shifter hard to move

I know nothing about GM products but you might try disconnecting the cable/linkage at the trans. If it's still hard to shift then you should look for something binding the shifter under the dash or under the hood. If it has a cable rust and corrosion could be the cause.

Compare that to the $12,000 USD our friends paid for a twelve day Alaska sea/rail cruise. Our three month rv trip came in under 10k

RE: Hauling a conoe

It depends on the weight, some can be lifted over head and loaded I have two 60 lb. yaks that I load onto a Ford Escape by myself, I'm 58 yo. I also use wheels under them to transport overland. You can find different loading techniques on YouTube

You could skip over to I39 from Indy. It adds 2 hours but only one toll and no white knuckles
