RE: Are we the only people in all of So Cal who love to camp?

Hello - I am new here, and I was wondering...are we the only people in all of So Cal who enjoy camping? :0
I'm beginning to think so! We got our TT last June. My Husband is an experienced camper, and I loved camping as a kid, so we were really excited to hit the road and meet some fellow campers.....but everywhere we go in CA, the people we meet are visiting from another State! There must be other people out there who are camping, from So Cal? We enjoy camping at the State parks and places where we have the feel of really camping...so maybe that has something to do with us only meeting out of town folks? Just curious... :)
Nope. We love it so much we moved from Hermosa Beach to SE AZ where we feel like we're camping even when we're home. ;)

RE: Boondocking Topo Map resource

You can do much the same here by turning on "US topo" plus it shows Public CGs and public lands.
Well, not really. My link is for those of us who don't not use campgrounds. Plus, the one you posted has only one detailed topo source and is a bit more clunky to navigate. That said, I have bookmarked it just in case. ;) Thanks.

Boondocking Topo Map resource

Here's a tool I've been using for a couple of years but never thought to share with the community.
You can search around in Google Earth/Maps and then switch between several different topo map sources (or vice versa). Then you can print your own map or order maps from My Topo.com. (I find that the t4 and t6 topos show more trails and ruins.)
To run it, click on the Gmap4 link in the second line from the top:
http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.html
It doesn't show "land ownership" so you are on your own there, but I seem to recall that there is a widget for Google Earth/Maps that does show BLM and FS lands.
Enjoy!

Edit to add: There is also a link for you mountain bikers. ;)

RE: Road to Anza Borrego

We've only got a 15 gal blackwater tank and have gone 2 weeks without dumping.
LS
Impressive.
I re-read your post. You said "waste tank". Is that graywater or blackwater? I was commenting on blackwater. If it's graywater, use it to water a cactus. (Make sure you are using bio-degradable soap and detergent, though.)
For those about to yell at me, I learned this from both BLM and FS personel. Tent campers do it all the time. ;)
LS
All I can say is, I read several National and State park site rules, and they all said ANY dumping was illegal. I'd be overjoyed to learn otherwise. Especially grey water. Just so you don't dump it directly in a river or other water source.
It's been approved procedure for decades to dump dishwater when you're tent camping as long as you assure it won't spill into any rivers and such. I'd be happy to learn otherwise, and be able to dump my grey up in the San Gregornios, where it's dry as tender during the summer lately, but until I learn otherwise, I'm believing the official web sites.
Ray,
Relax. Have a good time. The worst part about A-B is the wind.
Watch the mountains to the North of the lake bed. If you're lucky, you'll see Navy/Marine FA-18s, flying Nap-of-the Earth, come over the crests inverted. If you hear them, you're too late. ;)

Not sure why they don't fix it, last time they paved it they left the ripples in it.
They can't. That's an earthquake fault that keeps shifting.

RE: Road to Anza Borrego

Heading out to the Anza-Borrego area next weekend. Some old-timer friends are leading the way with their pop-up to their favorite boondock site. Supposedly very popular area.
Any tips and tricks for the area? I could bring my portable 'blue boy' type tank, but I can only tow it at 5 mph, and getting into the back of my suv might be too hard, (or undesirable). Any boondocking sites within a short, very slow pull to a dump station? It would be easier than dragging the whole rig every time one off my 30 gallon waste tanks fills up.
Also, trails that I can bring my dog without having the tree cops getting me to 'ruspect mah authori-tee'.
Wildflowers are a plus. Seems like with the late rains we've had, should be a good month for them.

RE: Arizonia boondocking sites with directions

(edit) OH..OK sorry deleted list.
I didn't mean to imply that you should delete your list, just that others should not think that you provided the answer for the OP. Many others would benifit for reading your list.
Sorry for the confusion.

Gee, path1, I see nothing but campgrounds in your list. This is the Boondocking forum and Don listed boondocking and dry-camping sites.
@DonMcL: We boondock to get away from people. I don't like to broadcast where I go. That said, I will share secret/favorite places via PM with those that will not broadcast them. ;) Besides, finding them is half the fun. :)

RE: Road to Anza Borrego

Spent 3 days drycamping at the Legion in Borrego
Had a good time
I go once a year and this year really noticed the new road around Brawley.
Also tested out my new Garmin,Nuvi 50 w 5 in screen.Liked the elevation always displayed.
noticed the border patrol station on 86 was -60 Ft.:B
Why go to A-B and stay at the Legion campground when you could do some real boondocking? I do make use of their dump site, though. ;)

RE: Bought a Blue Flame Propane heater

When sailing we would place a clay flower pot over a burner before bed, then turn off the burner when we hit the rack. It worked very well and was safe.
Here's a DIY for a much fancier one (or you can buy it with a candle holder at the bottom of the link): http://heatstick.com/_Process.htm
Stay warm!

RE: Looking to buy our first Travel Trailer, Help Needed

If I had a pick'em up truck, I'd do a twofer; a TT and a Truck Camper. The kids can have their own space when using both, and you also have the ability to take the TC out, solo, for boondocking in areas where the TT won't go. ;)
But that's just me. :)

RE: Easiest towing small TT?

One thing though, you won't find a bunk bed option.
Actually, you might. They used to offer a "child rated" bunk bed over the dinette. But, I'm not sure if they still offer it. You lose a lot of storage, though.

RE: Anaheim Ca route via I5 from the North

The 210 57 route is (usually) good in the early afternoon, BUT keep your eyes on the signage because it is very easy to end up in the wrong lane on the 57 and end up on the 60 heading into downtown LA. In a 40 footer with a toad, you will not be able to scramble across the lanes in time. The junction comes pretty quickly after the I-10.
You can get live traffic info if you have internet access. Don't put too much trust in radio reports, though. I've heard minor finder benders reported during morning rush hour that were still being reported 6 hours later!
If you've done the I-5 all these years, any other route will be a breeze! ;)
Enjoy.

We are heading out that way in a couple of days. We are in Tucson stocking up on supplies after being out for a month in southwestern Arizona.
Did you change your mind? Are you going to the SW now instead of SE?

Thanks all. Looks like peg leg is it. S22 a good road, looked like some tight turns just before entering the park? 1 ton dually with slide in camper. Thanks again.

Oceanside, socal
If you like a lot of neighbors, Peg Leg is fine. If you want to be alone, keep driving along Rockhouse Rd. The closer you get to the dry lake the aloner you are. :)

RE: Anza borrego state park

Hello,
I just left Slab City after 10 days and I am now thinking about Anza Borrego State Park 4 dry camping. I would arrive on State Highway 78 from the West, what advice can you give me regarding dry camping at Anza borrego, what do I need to know? I have a truck with a Lance camper on the back, self contained and I will pack out any trash that I may accumulate. Thank you.
David
Well, Slab City is East of Anza-Berrego, so I not sure where are approaching from if you say you are comming from the West. But, you have the perfect rig for A-B.
Clarke dry lake is North East of Berrego Springs off S22. Take Rockhouse Road North until you find a spot to your liking. With a TC you can go all the way to the dry lake.
Enjoy!
