RE: What do people want from their news ?
When speaking of history, be aware, it is also slanted. Why? Because history is written by the winner. Examples, do you not think the history of the settlement of the west would be totally different if it were written by the American Indians? Would not the history of World War II be different if written by the Nazis?
History, in most cases, is told from the slanted view of the winner to their audience that wants this slanted view. I see very little difference between history and todays news shows.
RE: What do people want from their news ?
Everyone says they want fair and balanced news reporting but that"frankly" is not true. If that were true, would some please explain to me how the news shows making the most negative, mostly totally untrue statements, are enjoying double digit viewer increases right now. The real truth, most people listen to news shows that "slant" their coverage to the views of the person watching them.
As Jack Nickelson said in a Few Good Men, "You don't want the truth, you cannot handle the truth". Viewers only want the "truth" as they "believe" it to be whether they are accurate or not. Criticize the networks all you want, but truthfully, they are giving their audience exactly what their audience wants. And that is what I find discouraging.
RE: What do people want from their news ?
Fair and balanced news? What is that and where can one get it? Today, every station has an agenda and slant their news towards that agenda, right or left, depending on the station. Why do they do this? The answer, it gets ratings and the further to the right or left they are, the higher the ratings. They play to their core auditions and do not care about the rest.
Therefore, it is no longer news, just their slanted version of what happened today. The news stations of today are as polarized.
RE: Disadvantages of retirement?
Better like spending time with your spouse. Any little annoying habits each has can me magnetized when you start spending more time together. Many married couples really do not know each other due to all the time they are apart due to work. Then when they are home together, there is little time when one is not doing something. When you are retired, all that changes. You have lots of free time to spend together and you will probably grow closer, OR further apart depending on the enjoyment each has with the other.
I had a friend who could not wait to go back to work for this reason. Another friend is the total opposite, in total heaven spending lots of quiet time with his spouse. Which are you?
Due to less income in retirement, most couple have to cut back on some of the luxury items before taken for granted. Be sure both spouses are prepared to do this or there will be problems. I had another friend whose wife was not happy about her husbands retirement because of this.
RE: Social Security at 62?
Dutch 12078--Thanks for clarifying that. My error, you are correct. Please accept my apology for questioning your statement and thanks for the link to the site..
RE: Social Security at 62?
Dutch12078--I believe SS Benefits are calculated on the top 35 Quarters, "not years" of your working life. I could be mistaken but I do not think so. Can someone verify. I looked in my SS statement but could not find.
RE: Social Security at 62?
To compare apples to apples, you have to also add interest on the money you start receiving between 62 and 66 THEN divide by 300 and that will place the break even point after age 82. I did my math and also started at age 62.
RE: Article on Dale JR...........poor guy is in the dumps!
Jr is now going through problems, (slump, lack of confidence, learning the ability to communicate problems of the car to the crew chief and etc) that other drivers had to learn to even reach nascar in the first place. Jr did not earn his Nascar wings, he was born with them due to his last name. Now, he has these problems and it is completely destroying him as he is clueless as to how to handle them.
He has so little confidence, he has ask for a dictator Crew Chief from owner Hendrick. He does not want to even think, just follow orders. In other words, he wants someone who will shoulder all the blame so if things continue to go bad,he can just say he is just following orders. Now that is total lack of self confidence and he is the face of Nascar. That would be akin to Tiger Woods wanting a caddy that would select his club, tell him how to hit the ball and then read all his puts for him. Can you imagine that?
I'm sorry Tiger, to use you and Jr in the same sentence is hardly fair to you. I only made the comparison because Jr has legions of fans that really believed he was the Tiger Woods of Nascar. They believe Jr just had bad equipment and and a bad caddy.
RE: Article on Dale JR...........poor guy is in the dumps!
Thanks 8.1 Van, I knew you could tell us what the problem was with Jr. However, you used the same reason when he drove for DEI and then if Jimmie had Tony Eury as a crew chief. The truth, if Jr had Chad Knause for a crew chief, he still would never win a championship. Teaching Jr how to win a championship in Nascar would be even more difficult than teaching you the traits of a good driver.
Speaking of Nascar Driver's stock, I am considering using all the money I made off shorting Jr to buy some Joey Lagano stock to hold for the next 15 years. What an outstanding talented nice kid. I'm also going to purchase some Juan Montoya stock to hold for the next 6 to 8 years. That bull has finally learned to drive in a china shop. I can no longer short Jr as it cannot go much lower. However, I am also considering shorting Jeff Gordon as I believe his stock has peaked, no more championships for him. To many outside interest. I do not blame him, beautiful wife and child and I thank him for making me money when I owned his stock. He has lost some of that passion.
I also will continue to hold onto my Kyle Bush stock as it has plenty of room for more upward movement in the next ten years.
RE: Vanishing Jobs
Technology does change thing but we are not changing with it. Just graduating from high school with no long suffice. The new jobs of today and especially the new jobs of tomorrow will require certain skills not included in a high school diploma.
Parents are not doing their job making sure that their kids get these skills through college or tech school primary because of the cost.
Unless one makes millions, one can no longer have numerous kids and have the financial where all to pay for these new requirements in the new job market in the USA. The days of only a high school diploma making a middle income salary in a factory are over. They know longer exists and they are not coming back. The sooner parents discover AND accept this, the sooner we will get through this. However, I am afraid this will not happen in the near future. This will cause a greater degree of separation between the "Haves" and the "Have Nots" which will cause more unbalance in our country.
RE: Article on Dale JR...........poor guy is in the dumps!
Let me tell you how far Jr's stock has dropped. No one now wants to admit they once owned it. In past post, if someone wrote a negative comment about Jr on this forum, 10 of his stock owners would cry foul and call the person writing the negative post such names as "couch potato" and etc.
What happened to all his fans such as 8.1 Van? Have you sold the stock?
RE: Some real questions.
Why you will not drink the water when in Mexico yet you will pay 50% more for Imported Mexican Beer made from the same water???
Why you tell your kids "Do not do drugs, they are dangerous to your health" while sipping on Jim Bean and water??
RE: Article on Dale JR...........poor guy is in the dumps!
He is a nice kid but his talent "by his fans" has been over rated for years. When he went to Henderick, I posted he would now be the fourth best driver on that team. His fans called me a everything and the kindest was Jr hater.
He received his popularity and became the face of Nascar because of his last name. His driving ability has never lived up to this popularity. Fans first excuse for Jr was, "Wait till he gets on a top team". Jr even started to believe his fans and before one year, Jr said he would win 12 races that year!! Then it was his crew chief. Crew chief replaced. What next? One day his fans will discover that there are at least 20 drivers in Nascar with more talent than Jr.
Again, nice kid, would love to have a beer with him but he is, talent wise, grossly over rated. The face of Nascar should be Jimmy Johnson and no, I am no big fan of Johnson. However, I do recognize his talent as he has proved the last three years and maybe again this year.
RE: Is it just me or the sign of the times
If the youth are lying more today, it is because our generation taught them that it is OK. When young people see some of our most respected people making millions lying or telling half truths on radio, TV, the lecture circuit, and the pulpit, and their parents and friends accepting it as truth, it is teaching them that is OK to tell less than the truth if it helps one's cause or is profitable.
I do not believe the youth of today are lying any more than our generation. Our generation is just better at masking or hiding it in half truths.
RE: Tiger Woods: Sports' First Billion-Dollar Man !
He deserves it. He is the most dominating sport figure for a sport ever. He won 50% of the events he entered this year. Golf is no team sport, it all rest on the shoulders of the golfer and he is the best golfer ever and the most dominating sports figure ever. When Tiger plays, I watch because you never know when he is going to do something spectacular AGAIN.
RE: GM's return policy????
It does not cost you the $500 discount you would have received because they return the full purchase price back to you. What they "do not return to you" is the app $399 title transfer fee that most dealers are now charging you to transfer a title that takes them 10 minutes to do.
Yes, it is a gimmick but many gimmick work fantastically. At least they have you talking about it!!!
RE: Florida State Park Frustrations?
officergator--according to you, Snow Birds are the only ones in FL who run red lights; have accidents, are rude; have no respect for FL residence and workers; and tax your system.
Is it the Snow Birds fault your city fathers do not add additional help during the winter? Instead, your city fathers chose to save all the tax dollars to pay your and other city employees salaries in the other 8 month when they are not there. That in itself is cheating the Snow Birds and is probably the source of your anger towards this group. You have to work harder when they are there and blame the Snow Birds instead of where the blame really lies, with your city fathers.
I live in Sun City AZ, a 55 and older community of 70K in a county of 3 million people. The average age in Sun City is 75 years of age. Yet Sun City AZ has the lowest car insurance rates and homeowner rates of anywhere in the county. And this is not because of age. A 60 year old in other parts of the county pays more for both car insurance and homeowner rates than the same age per in Sun City. Why? Because there are fewer accidents and less crime being commited by these old folks which blows your theory, not fact, out of the water !!!!
You say the Snow Birds tax your system. Untrue. Snow Birds have fewer wrecks, receive less ticket, commit fewer crimes and other use of police services per capitol than any age group. Therefore, they are using fewer of your services. They "are not taxing your system", your city chooses to "Tax your system" by not spending any of the tax dollars these folks bring to your city while they are there.
You resentment is aimed at the wrong group. Vent your frustrations and anger at your city leaders not the Snow Birds. After all, they did not get a vote when these leaders that decide how your tax dollars are spent were elected.
RE: Florida State Park Frustrations?
officergator--the only "fact" you have given is that the more people on the road, the more accidents". This is a given due to the law of large numbers verses small numbers. Your statement that "drivers over age 60 being responsible for more accident than other drivers minus those under age 20 years of age" is also not accurate.
First of all, to get to this number, are you going to ask all FL residence over age 60 and all FL residence under age 20 to leave the state along with the Snow Birds? The FACTS are that drivers 55 years of age and older "have the cheapest insurance rates of any drivers in the nation and that includes FL". Their accident rate is LESS THAN the average driver, not more as you claim but do not back up with facts "AS THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY DOES. I know, I am a retired Property and Casualty agent from one of the largest insurance companies in the nation. The accident rate of older people is not higher than the average driver until their later years around 80 years of age. MOST of the Snow Birds fall into the classification of the safest drivers on the road PER THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY not officergators numbers which the insurance industry does not use for good reason. Sorry.
The fact that YOU write more tickets for out of state drivers should not surprise anyone. I will not comment on you wearing the proud uniform protection all your local citizens except to say, you swore to protect everyone EQUALLY and based on your attitude about Snow Birds this could be questioned.
As I said before, should these Snow Birds quit coming to your state and mine, a lot of people would lose their jobs, even possible you officergator. As far as you owing them something as one poster said, you do, RESPECT. When you accept their money they are entitled to the use of the states facilities as you are "because they paid for that use".
RE: Florida State Park Frustrations?
First, let me state, I am not a Snow Bird, therefore, I am not offended by anything you say about Snow Bird. I just own a home in Ar and one in Sun City AZ where I live about 6 months in each. In the winter in AZ, I hear the same complaints, most of which are unwarranted.
Don't you think you state park users are being a little selfish? You want a law passed reserving 40% of the sites for FL residence. Do you believe you are the only ones affected by these Snow Birds? How about the golfers? Should there be a law that the courses, especially the city and county courses reserve 40% of the tee times for FL residence? After all, they are there for the enjoyment of the year round citizens who paid for them? How about the restaurants, the museums, the movies when new releases open? Should 40% of their seats or passes be held for full time residence? After all, if you did not frequent their establishments all year they would have to close their doors. Why should FL residence have to wait longer to play golf, eat at their favorite restaurant or visit their favorite museum.
Now what are we going to do about all the Snow Birds taking all the key spots on the fishing pier or the beach? Reserve 40% for locals? How about all the traffic jams these out of town visitors cause? Should we also not limit the number on the roads at one time? Working people driving to work have rights too!
I hear all the same complaints here in AZ. Where do you stop?
Now for officergator. I noticed you backed up none of your accusations about the driving ability of Snow Birds with facts. One can tell you enjoy writing them tickets. First, I doubt that the rate of accidents of Snow Birds are any higher than the average of Florida residence. Is there some driving course all FL residence must take that make them such wonderful drivers? Did not think so.
Lets face it, you say Snow Birds are welcome but you do not like them using your parks, golf courses, driving on your roads and you do not like their attitude. OTHER THAN THEIR MONEY,is there anything you like about them?
For once, I believe your elected representatives are smarter than the average public. They know what these Snow Birds mean to FL and the budget disaster FL would be in without them. I have not read one complaint about Snow Birds that I have not heard uttered here in AZ.
