RE: Interstate 5 mountain pass info

but the pass near Ashland to Yreka is about 5,000 feet elevation, and grapevine is over 6,000
---
The highest point over Siskiyou Pass on I-5 is 4310'. The highest point on I-5 over Tejon Pass ("the Grapevine") is 4160'.
Good info. Grapevine is also so much farther South, the chance of snow is slim where Siskiyou has a much better chance of snow. The Northern passes are more apt to have bad weather in March than SoCal.

RE: Zion National Park; where to stay?

If your going to Zion, stay at Watchman campground if possible! It is way less money than staying outside the park and you will be close to the shuttle. Make sure you go for Watchman, as there are only two campgrounds in the park and it is the only one with any hook up's, water and electricity.
Agree that Watchman is the place to stay, nice campgound and very convienient. It is walking distance to the Visitor Center where you catch the shuttle and also close to a grocery store.
They do have Electric but no water unless they just recently installed it.

From the pictures on the news it looked like it was right in front of where Flag City RV is.

RE: I-80 Donner Summit

Happens every storm lately because of all the yahoos with their AWD luxury SUVs who think they can safely drive 65 in a snow storm. They can, it's stopping that is the problem. We try to stay in especially on a weekend when we get a storm like today's, it took our neighbor 2 hours roundtrip to go to the grocery store, normally 15 minutes tops. I can't even begin to imagine being on 80 right now and we are very experienced snow drivers, it's the idiots that have changed it.

RE: glacier national park

Next summer we are going to Glacier National Park.We are having a hard time picking a campground around that area.I would like to stay at Glacier but they have no showers and you can run your generators between certain hours only. The other choice is going to a private campground with full hookups. I need some input from campers that have been at both campgrounds. I like sites that have some privacy and I see a lot of the private campgrounds the sites are very close together. Please let me know what is the best way to go. Thanks a lot
to find a private campgrounds with private sites are a rarity. in fact, i've never seen one out here on the West Coast. they are all parking lots with virtually no privacy.
i'm sure a few exist but probably not near a National Park.
we stayed at Apgar. but we used the trailer's shower and had a gennie to top off the batteries.
i hear Mountain Meadows RV Park is very nice and has wide sites for a private campground.
Not even close to the truth in that neck of the woods. We had a great site in West Glacier at Glacier RV, it had water and elec. Nice private sites with plenty of vegatation between them.
On the East side we stayed at Johnsons and got a water and elec site in the back away from the FHU sites. We were in the middle of an Aspen grove with incredible views.
I have to agree that this is the rule of thumb most places near NPS, but we have found nice private campgrounds near many of the NPs we have visited in the West. Just have to search them out sometimes.

RE: Zion and Bryce Canyon

It needs to be pointed out that if your rig is over 50' in total length, you are not allowed through the tunnel even with an escort.
I would stay at both parks as the distance between them is far enough to make it a long day traveling and sightseeing if you homebase at just one of them.

RE: Florence to Eugene rt OK? also chains req'd on I-5 OR?

There are NO laws requiring anyone to carry chains unless they are entering a chain area during a storm. Conscience has nothing to do with it, anyone would be well within the law to travel on dry roads in good weather with no chains. Look up the law, I found it easy by googling it, but i don't know how to post the link.
Possibly in California but not so in Oregon--

Retired on June 15th of this year from the San Francisco Fire Dept, best job in the world. Miss the firehouse, but not all the BS that goes with the job these days.

RE: Travel to Yosemite on Friday.

The forecast I just read from NOAA said 2-4 inchs in the Valley, you can expect more higher up on the route in. If it were me I would not chance it, this storm is supposed to pack a big punch but blow through quickly. Is wait and see a possibility? Saturday morning could be a whole new ball game and an easy drive in. One minute it can be snowing like crazy up here and the next bright sunshine. The roads will more than likely be clear by Saturday if this storm doesn't stall and just blows through quickly.

RE: Bryce Canyon and Zion

No, but you might have a little snow problem in march for Bryce.. As I remember its near 7,000 ft elvation, good luck.
Elevation at the visitor center is 7900' and it goes up from there.

RE: Dad lost his job, so this family lives on the road

Don't be so hard on the guy. What was he to do?
Well, for starters....sell the expensive house and buy a cheaper one (rv's ONLY depreciate). Put your kids in school!! These folks aren't even home schooling, they're learning ONLINE!! Then, if they really still want to "see the world", buy a tent. And $300 per month? Impossible!
At least they aren't camping at Walmart. :)

RE: Great Basin NP

Thanks 4runnerguy for the on topic information. May won't work for us. Sounds like a fall trip for us. I'm not sure if any of the NP campgrounds can accommodate my 40' MH. Guess I should call them. The Border Inn RV Park at Baker seems to get good enough reviews to suit us. Anybody have any comments on it?

RE: Great Basin NP

There's supposed to be an RV park in Baker that's associated with a motel, but I know nothing about it or even if it's still open. If it's not open any longer, then the closest RV park to Great Basin would be in Ely. Why not stay in one of the park's campgrounds?
If you're both over 62, be sure you each get a Senior Pass if you don't already have one (the old Golden Age Passport). That will allow you free entrance to the park, 1/2 price camping, plus 1/2 price on the cave tours (only the pass holder gets the 1/2 price on cave tours, which is why I said that both of you should have one).
Major's Place has hook-ups and they are half way between Great Basin NP and Ely. The place in Baker was probably not someplace I would choose, too barren and if the wind kicks up like it usually does, it would not be comfortable.
I would dry camp in the park if I was going, other places are too far and not nearly as nice as the campgrounds there.

RE: Snow Canyon State Park- Utah

I live about 5 miles north of Snow Canyon. March is a very good time to camp there. Snow Canyon is one of the most visited state park in Utah. Suggest you make reservation. Snow Canyon is a destination in its self and should be considered for more than a stop over.
Johnna,
We were in your neck of the woods for the marathon. A friend of ours ran it, beautiful area you live in.
We were very impressed with Snow Canyon, great place for hikes and the campground looked nice. Didn't look like many big sites for RVs, with the exception of the ones with electricity up front. The ones we preferred were dry camping sites, but only a few would fit our 30' TT.

RE: Home Base after Retirement

St George is great, we were there in October. Checked out some real estate, you wouldn't believe the house prices, very good. Real nice new homes we looked at that would be well out of our range here in CA.
Good location to take off on trips from as well.
