RE: south dakota black hills?

Rafter J is the nicest campground in all of the Hills. It's about 50 miles from Sturgis. And there will be minimal bike activity in the campground.

RE: Need Rcommendations On (2) RV Insurance Providers

Explorer is the company owned agency for National Interstate.
I have bought their policies twice on both the pickup and trailer for travel in Mexico.
Their premium was less. I had the start date the day I entered Mexico.
I cancelled effective the day I exited Mexico. I received refunds within one penny of what I figured taking days into the cost.
I would recommend them, but have no claims experience.

RE: Alaska campgrounds availability in general

How plentiful are the fuel stops along the Alaskan HWY? I need diesel for my tow truck. Are there any long runs where there isnt diesel?
You will have no problems getting fuel. Refer to your guides and travel on the top half of your tank.

RE: Alaska campgrounds availability in general

Reservations are definitely required at Denali if you want to stay within the park itself.
I think half of the campsites are are subject to reservations. And half are available for walkup.
I have been to Denali several times and have no problem getting a site in any of the three RV CG's for the following day.
I can't speak for the same day site availability, as I was already somewhere else the first day.
If you know your schedule in advance, then call for reservations as soon as possible.

Opps----here he says--- "I have a 30' Bounder, and would not hesitate to take it to Alaska again."
Probably traded the Bounder for a 1st class ticket.

RE: Have Your Ducks In A Row @ Border

They turned me back because they assumed I was poor, and poor people are not allowed into Canada by law. I really didn't want to go through such a country full of snobs, so I willingly turned around and flew first class to Alaska.
You were all set for a 6 week trip to Alaska, drove to the border and had only $200 cash?
Then you went and parked the rig, bought a first class ticket to Alaska and were soon on your way?
I don't believe it.

RE: Milepost & Alaskan Camping---New Editions?

We found that if you have the Church's book, the Milepost was just extra weight and the loss of the money to purchase it.Ron
The two books are very different in the info they provide on the Alaska trip. They are both an excellant aid to the trip.
Even the Church book says this---"Our descriptions of the destinations and routes in this book are inteneded to give you an idea of what the city or region has to offer. They are by no means complete, you will undoubtedly need additional guides during your trip."
If you are inclinded to dive along all day with little info about what is along the routes, mile by mile, then get some excellent info on campgrounds--just the Church book is good for you.

RE: Toilet Doesn't Hold Water - Causes?

Instructions
for Thetford
Part #33011
(“Bent Screwdriver”)
Use the tool to clean groove:
1. Depress the two foot pedals
to slide the blade back and fully expose the seal groove for cleaning.
2. Insert the tool at the “4 o’clock” position.
3. Rotate the tool clockwise to scrape out the debris. (You may experience resistance which may require added twisting force to remove the buildup.)
4. The tool should leave seal at about the “6 o’clock” position.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
This is from the Thetford site.
I'm wondering if I bend a screw driver or coat hanger, can I wreck anything using it?

RE: I'm out of touch... what 5th wheels are the best these days?

Last time I looked at a HitchHiker, the bottom wasn't "sealed". Just some blue plastic "cardboard" material screwed on. Nor was there much insulation below the tanks, maybe some bubble wrap. That was a few years ago, might be different now.
The top end coaches have the thick insulation and are "sealed".

RE: 2006 32' Newmar Cypress Quality

We have a 2008 Newmar Kountry Aire. I'm not sure I wlll ever again consider buying another brand RV.
Well, they don't make the Kountry Aire anymore. Or the Mountain Aire. Or the Kountry Star.
Cypress or "Torrey Pine", now---that's all. The Torrey Pine has those goofy looking cutout corners in the front cap for a short box.
Too bad Newmar killed the upper end.

RE: AUTO INSURANCE

I got National Interstate coverage on my pickup and trailer. Start date was just prior to entering Mexico. Canceled it immediately on leaving. They refunded all premium except for days used. Cost me about $5 a day.

RE: AUTO INSURANCE

Get comp and collision coverage form a US company that provides Mexico Coverage. It will pay US repair rates and even pay to return the vehicle to the US if needed. Try Progressive or National interstate from Explorer agency.
Try here for liability. Not just for caravans-----http://adventurecaravans.com/tours/tour-insurance.asp.

RE: Ice on refrigerator blades... ?

I defrost mine every couple of weeks when on long trips. Just shut off the fridge. Wait a couple of hours. Then pull the ice off the fins. Usually slides right off in chunks.
Maybe pull a few off, then wait a while for the rest to loosen up.

Bad smelling gasoline

Took the ATV to northern Wyoming to ride. Filled it there and also a 6 gal can. The fuel was probably refined in the area.
Brought home some. Every time I open the can, it reeks. Kinda smells like nautral gas--strong.
Any idear why?
