RE: Most reliable connector. semi 7 pin or RV blade ?

Well, curiosity got the best of me, so I contacted Hopkins about the metal used in the connections of the Hopkins Endurance #48470 connector I was describing in the post above.
Turns out, they are NICKEL PLATED BRASS. The back end wire connections terminals as well as the inside the plug terminals on the front (blades and center pin of the 7 way, and all holes and ground pin of the integrated 4 and 5 ways) are all nickel plated brass. This is a very good thing. In fact, it is better than brass alone, and is more costly to produce.
As an example, I was recently shopping for triplex pressure pumps, and the nickel plated brass ones added a couple hundred dollars to the cost of an otherwise identical pump.Hi. I
Another feature that Hopkins made me aware of is that this is the only connector that has a 3 year warranty. I'm not big on warranties, but if you are, then there it is. Finally, the Hopkins guy was talking about how they were trying to break the door off of one of these connectors in the shop... just to see what it would take to do it. They couldn't manage to, he said, and they were "beatin on it".
I bought this connector when the spring in my current Pollack brand connector would not fully close the door. This would leave the inside of the connector exposed and vulnerable to tire flung water and road spray, as well as dirt from the vacuum created in the back of the vehicle when the vehicle is moving forward at highway speeds. I didn't like that, and wanted a door on the trailer connector to shut securely. This Hopkins connector did, and has a neoprene seal built into the door to boot.
However, when I started to remove my Pollack connector, I saw a way to fix my existing door, so I chose to do that instead. Now that I've seen this thread, and responded to this post, and learned more about the connector I already bought and planned to return... I think I'll keep it. It's a good unit, even if goofy looking. It meets the need for a robust no fuss trailer wiring connection, and eliminates the use of translators and adaptors for the 4 and 5 way connectors.
It comes with it's own metal mounting bracket and rear wire harness sealing boot as well.
Now THAT's over analysis for you. Any day, any time, any place, any subject... even one as small as a simple wiring harness connector that comes free on most vehicles... I'll outgun ya!I'll take that challenge and raise you one.
The problem with the RV 7 pin connector is the trailer side plug.
There are two type of terminals used the trailer side plugs. One terminal is a split terminal with two contacts. This is the problem terminal.
The other terminal is the flat blade type. This is the good one.
The split terminal is not compatible with any of the receptacles used on the OEM trucks and almost all of the aftermarket.
The flat blade terminal on the trailer side plug is the one designed to work with receptacle on the truck.
Take a look at the truck side receptacle. It has a fold over pin that creates the spring function of the connection system. It is designed to mate to a flat blade terminal that inserts into the truck side with the retaining cavity surrounding it.
The RV connector is designed almost backwards compared to most connection systems.
When you use a split terminal on the trailer side you are trying to mate two female contacts together.
My opinion is Hopkins is the best RV connectors on the market. The construction is 260 brass with a nickel under plate finished in tin.

RE: Any 13' Ram DEF MPG yet?

Production didn't start on the 2500's by the time he had stated he purchased the truck. He posted on January 19th that he already had 250 miles on the truck...only the 2013 1500's were out then and some trucks that had been a shows. but as he stated, who cares...That was what some of us were talking about...didn't say he didn't own one NOW, we said he didn't own one THEN....
he's very good at name calling and endearing himself in here, I'm done with him as his name calling has pushed all the wrong buttons...enjoy your new truck. You don't know when production started. All you are doing is quoting internet gossip. You and JA make a nice couple.

Real easy to solve. Take a picture of your truck with the fuel door open to clearly show the DEF fill port. Done.http://mob1353.photobucket.com/albums/q680/ZeroGravity1999/DSC01149_zps9c531e87.jpg height=360 width=400

RE: Generators

I have Honda EU1000 for battery charging. The generator has not run correctly from day one. I finally took the carb off and broke the fuel screw off and removed it. I bought a replacement needle and adjusted is correctly. It now runs smooth. This procedure was a total PIA because I had to remove the carb to make needle adjustments. I should not have had to do this for a high priced red generator. I've switched to a blue 3000iseb now. I hope it doesn’t need to be redesigned.

RE: Any 13' Ram DEF MPG yet?

Oh boy here we go again. Just when (date) again did you get your truck MM? Last I heard it was before production started :H Maybe I misunderstood your post, but I can certainly look it up!This thread is about the 2o13 truck, not me, You are a first class jackass!
MM49
How can you talk about "class" when you are calling people names? Rick asked a perfectly legit question...you stated you owned that truck in January, well before they were manufactured. We called you on it, you disappeared. Now you're back with a 2013..congrats on the new truck..Welcome to the new generation of Ram trucks.
Hey, we DO forgive and forget around here, so suck it up and don't start name calling because of something YOU did ..You're not the first to be called out on these forums and you won't be the last....been there, done that, got the T-shirt....
The name calling doesn't really endear you to very many people on these forums..As far I'am concerned you are cut from the same cloth as the JA. Getting called out for vehicle ownership in a fuel mileage thread is BS. Who in hell does he think he is, god, Obama...

My 2013 2500 4WD 6.7L DSL. LB is getting 20.5mpg. I have been working out of state recently and have been driving lots of highway. The front axle disconnect is very noticeable. It free wheels very well

RE: Watch the 2 millionth Cummins engine for the Ram being built

This thread is a celebration of a near perfect production of light duty diesel engine. When Cummins started the 5.9 there was hardly a market for automotive diesel in North America. General Motors had all but destroyed it with a series of engines that were lucky to make it past warranty. travelnutz would have you remember this as one of GM's sterling achievements.

RE: April Sales numbers

You are quoting aggregate numbers. If you want to contest the point you should address the topic of my comment. "Sales incentive per volume of trucks sold" You are trying to cloud the issue. Nice try thou.
MM49
how's that new RAM of yours doing?
I like the truck alot. Great mileage both towing and unloaded. No problems in 10k. I like the Firestone tires also.

RE: April Sales numbers

The Chevy sales increase is due to increased incentives up to 16.4%. The highest in the industry.
Yahoo News "The company also saw a $200 million drop in operating earnings as it was forced to offer pricing deals on its current large truck line ahead of the launch of the new models"

Gotta love internet news. I suggest that you dig deeper into other sources.
DETROIT—General Motors Co.'s GM +3.15%first-quarter profit fell a less-than-expected 11% as a result of a weaker performance in North America, where the largest U.S. auto maker is spending heavily to launch new pickup trucks, continuing losses overseas and the impact of currency turbulence in South America.
Wall Street had expected a bigger earnings decline, and GM shares were up 4.5% at $31.54 in midday trading on Thursday in New York. You are quoting aggregate numbers. RE: April Sales numbers

Ram up 48% for the one month (April 2013) only but only 23% for the YTD vs 2012. Chevrolet Silverado alone is up 23.5% for the same YTD sales.
It takes a lot less numbers of actual truck sales to increase 23% having 109,003 total sold than having a 23% increase with 156,044 total sold. Like approx only 65% of an actually sold number of trucks or 1.5 to 1 required to equal. Use the math you learned in school and don't be misled.
Wow, what a great way to take good news and turn it into bad news. As a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks, I learned that a 23% YTD increase is better than a 23% YTD decrease. That's the math I learned in school.

RE: Not even 24 hours........

I am all for the individual. The owners of the vehicles should be able to do what they want with them. The government choice of which gas they want to regulate has been based on available technology and financial decisions. If you breathe enough of exhaust from green vehicle it will kill you just as dead as a dirty vehicle. This is another Al Gore strategy to make green money.

RE: Which Tire Takes The Most Punishment?

All trailer tires take beating. They twist and scuff on every corner. If there is any debris on the road your trailer tire will find it. The only safe tire on a trailer is the spare.

RE: Here it comes......... Emissions fines........

"These truck are our own property. We should be able to whatever we want with them>...
MM49"
Well, you sure can do what ever you want to with your truck as long as you don't take it off your owned property on to a public street, road, area, etc, or excessively polute the air that crosses your property as your neighbors will likely turn you in. Perhaps you also dump your RV holding tanks right on your lawn too? Heck, then you wouldn't even need a driver's license or tags for the vehicle as you are driving it only on your own property and we can call you a farmer! Just think of how much money you'd save every year so you can but more and more illegal junk for your precious vehicle!
Maybe you're really on to something or just plain on something...I'll remind you that I own as much as the road as you.
