RE: Dumping half bath black tank every other trip or so?

We have always dumped all tanks after every trip no matter what. Always felt like anything could happen and there is always a chance that we could get stuck at home for months on end. To me, it's peace of mind.

RE: Can my TV handle this 5th Wheel?

You should be ok. passing on steep grades might be slow. My b&law's 5er is nearly the same specs, he pulls it with a 2011 tundra. Only mods are brake controller, towing mirrors and airbags. Its no diesel but pulls very well Colorado. I believe he is over on pin wieght (i believe bags serve thier purpose but don't give you any legal increase). Imo the tundra is a slightly stronger drivetrain and you have stronger frame & suspension. If you are with in your legal limits and comfortable driving it, go for it.
I'm in the Yes camp as well. No safety issues at all, and the 6 spd trans should help a great deal in pulling you rig. You're probably already familiar with the gas engine power band/revving, so as long as you are OK with it, I say go for it.

RE: How do I use air bags?

Think I would find out the minimum recommended PSI for your air bags, and maintain at that level to prevent any damage to them. You shouldn't need any more than that with a 3/4 Yukon, unless you're hauling a lot of weight in the vehicle.

RE: 6800lbs. and 31 foot long

Can't help but wonder what killed 2 rear ends in a 2007 Suburban. I towed a much heavier rig with the same truck for several year and several thousand miles with no problems. Sub was a 6.0L/4.10 LTZ model. Maybe different gear ratio? Anyway, for towing twice per year, I would use the 1/2 ton chevy truck. Just slow down and be safe...

RE: 2005 GMC HD2500 tire choice

Bought 4 Cooper Discover HT's for mine 6 months ago (245's like yours). Very pleased so far, and not near the cost of other brands. Got them on a "4 for 3" deal with a $50 rebate to boot. A few of addtional folks on this forum have them as well. 60K mileage warranty.

RE: Bed tonneau covers

I eventually sold the hard cover that came with my truck and purchased an Access Lorado rollup cover. I wanted a lightweight cover with full access to the entire bed without removing (too old to mess with that, these days). Have had it a year and used it extensively while towing. Don't think I would own anything else, especiallty for the $ invested.

RE: Cougar Lite Furnace Upgrade

I still think that the devil is in the details here. I.e. there are disconnected/leaking/poorly routed ducts under the floor. Even my first 28' Four Winds/Dutchman travel trailer (also not a "polar" model") would easily run you out of the vehicle in the space of 30 minutes (even in the coldes weather). 35K BTU is really a lot of heating capacity provided that the ductwork is up to snuff. Hope everything works out, Redward!

RE: Cougar Lite Furnace Upgrade

Strange. I have never owned a TT or fifth wheel wherein the stock furnace wasn't capable of running us out of the place. Including the Cougar fifth wheel in my signature. You sure something else isn't wrong? E.g disconnected ductwork...

RE: Silverado 1500 upgrade

Had a similar experience to TOMG2, going from a 2007 1/2 ton Suburban 6.0/4.10 to a 2004 2500HD D/A. We were pulling about 8000lb fully loaded, and the Suburban actually handled it surprisingly well. Where I noticed the big difference with the 2500 (engine power aside) was in cross-winds from passing Semi's and braking on steep grades. I always felt that the Suburban was being pushed around a bit in the most extreme circumstances. And, the heavier weight of the 2500 seemed to level the playing field, not to mention heavier springs/payload/etc.
Would I ever go back to a 1/2 ton? Sure, however I think would make sure that the truck was heavier than the fully loaded TT, as a core requirement.

RE: Question about ACs & Power

One additional note. The BTU rating and AMP draw will also factor into the equation. E.g. we are running two 15K BTU A/C's and they draw too much current to run concurrently. Two high-efficiency 13.5K's might...

RE: I think it's upgrade time....

One last note to add. I you are going to swap, go up 2 levels to the 6L. You won't notice much difference with the 5.3. Know this from personal experience... the 6L will make a substantial difference.

RE: 5th wheel towing with a Power Wagon

Sounds like you have your answer then. On the plus side, that power wagon is still a heck of a tow vehicle. You could easily pull a larger travel trailer if you wanted to.

RE: 5th wheel towing with a Power Wagon

Think I would start by comparing tailgate height with one of the newer 4x4 trucks (stock) that generally work with the newer trailers. Like a Chevy 2500hd.... Pretty tall truck but generally works. This will give you a general idea how close or far off you may be. Hope it works out!

RE: Tote tank

We had a 25 gallon tote for a long time and only used it once. I don't think I would have wanted to wrestle anything larger than that around, from what I recall.

RE: First tow with new (to me) 2006 2500HD Dmax - questions

I run at 55/80 all the time as well; always use TH mode when towing and always leave in "D." For WDH I always kept at about 4 links, which was just enough to eliminate porpoising.

RE: $40,000 question

From my experience, you can get more for your money from GM, and you should be able to get a 3500 gas for 40k. However, both are great trucks. Personally, my first choice would be 4.10 gears in GM and 4.30 gears in Ford. However, it is often difficult to find anything over 3.73 on the dealer lots. So, if you are in the market now, you may not have a choice. It really sounds to me like you know what you're doing; just go drive one of each and see what you think. Good luck! And, please keep us posted.

RE: Do I want this TV? (2500 Yukon XL)

I agree with APT. This is the best (and only) 3/4 ton SUV on the market at this point. And, it should easily handle what you're looking to pull/haul. The 6-spd trans is a huge improvement over the pre-2008 models. Which is what I used to use before going to the fifth wheel. We actually pulled about 1000 lbs more that what you are looking at with no problems. And, this was with the 2007 1/2-ton 6.0L / 4.10 version with the 4-spd transmission. I know... we were probably pushing the 1400lb payload rating. :-) Anyway, my preference would be on the lower-mileage vehicle for warranty purposes. The backup camera was nice to have, but not a deal breaker. Happy camping!

RE: non-OEM tire size on used 2500HD I'm considering

My 2004 2500HD had the 285's on it when I bought it, as well (in similar condition to yours). I replaced them within 1 year and went back to the OEM size; also cranked the torsion bars back down to factory Z height when it was aligned. I like the new truck height; it rides smother than before; and there may also be a bit of an increase in towing performance. Hope you don't pass up this truck if it's in good shape and hasn't been abused.

RE: Need some help (again)

MMarty, you have it figured out. Stay with what you have if you're really going to load up to around 7000lbs. The 5.3 is going to be a step backward, and will probably cost you some money (and peace of mind) to boot.
