RE: Basic info on truck campers

WOW! That's a lot to absorb! You've given me a lot to think about.
He does not have a truck now. The jobs the company take will generally last from 3 to 6 months. They can be anywhere in the country. He doesn't have to haul many tools for his trade.
What I'm hearing is that he would need at least a 3/4 ton truck, even for a small camper, whereas if he uses a small travel trailer he could get by with a 1/2 ton truck. Right?
Thanks to all of you for your comments!

Basic info on truck campers

I have a grandson who is working construction in Florida and the company he is with does jobs all over the U.S. I mentioned to him that he might want to look into a truck camper instead of renting motel rooms when he works on out-of-town jobs. He is single and doesn't need anything very large, just the basics. The problem is, I know NOTHING about truck campers!
Do all truck campers require a 3/4 ton or larger truck?
What length bed is required?
Does the truck have to have special overload springs?
I don't know enough to know what other questions to ask!
Any advice will be appreciated!

RE: Squeaky door

I was getting a squeal sound from the door latch (meal on metal). I now use a 3-5" of black tape around the striker post.
Well, I finally got around to working on this problem. First I tried lubricating the rubber seal around the door because I was so sure that was where the squeaking was coming from. WRONG! :S
Eric, you were absolutely right! I wrapped electrical tape around the latch bolts and the squeaking is GONE!
Thanks to all for your suggestions! :B

RE: Problem with RM 7710 DC power adapters?

My adapter has a loose connection in the plug that goes into the GPS. I can wiggle it and the power goes on and off. I have another adapter that works fine.

Problem with RM 7710 DC power adapters?

The original car power adapter for my 7710 went bad and they sent me a new one. Now it had gone bad! Anyone else having this problem?

RE: HELP! MAYDAY! S.O.S. EMERGENCY!

I've determined the problem is definitely in the slide topper! Something inside the tube hangs up at times. Trying to figure out what to do to correct the problem. Now that I know what it is, I can manage to get the slideout in and out so we don't have to cancel the trip!

RE: Towed Vehicles

I just bought a 2012 Nissan Frontier with auto transmission and from all I can find out it is NOT towable 4-down! The owner's manual specifically forbids it. I also looked at the Motorhome magazine 2012 towing guide and it does not list it. I checked with Remco Towing with the same results.

RE: HELP! MAYDAY! S.O.S. EMERGENCY!

I think I've found the problem! A friend on another forum mentioned that he had a similar problem and it was the slide topper hanging. I looked and the curved arm that supports the slide topper tube is bent back about 2 inches toward the wall of the MH! :E The topper is moving free now but undoubtedly it is hanging going out! That makes sense because when it would hang it was the top of the slide that would jerk real bad!
I'm waiting for a reply from him to see what he did about it.
Thanks to all for your efforts to help me! :B

RE: HELP! MAYDAY! S.O.S. EMERGENCY!

I used pliers and pulled the brackets down as they would be as the slide moves in. As the bottom bracket went down the top bracket came out of the cover as it should. Both sides seem to be working the same. In fact, I checked the locks on the passenger side slide and they feel about the same as the others. Looks like the problem is not in the slide locks!
There are no shear pins in the shafts coming out of the motor gear box, only bolts & nuts.

RE: Norcold 1200 will not run on LP setting

You didn't say if you have flame at the fridge. If so, you could have the same problem I had.
I could see the flame and even had an RV tech check it and say it was OK, but the fridge would not cool. I took the orifice off (the piece where the flame comes out) and it was full of crud! I soaked it in alcohol for a couple of hours, cleaned the slots where the gas comes out with a wire brush, blew it out with high-pressure air, and now it works great.
One sure way to tell if that's the problem is to listen for a "roar" when the burner is on. Just seeing the flame is not enough. You should hear a fairly loud "roar".
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless! :B

RE: HELP! MAYDAY! S.O.S. EMERGENCY!

I checked the slide locks on each side of the side, and the aluminum bracket feels loose but does not have much movement. Is it supposed to move 90 degrees?

RE: HELP! MAYDAY! S.O.S. EMERGENCY!

Locate your drive motor and gear reduction unit. About 1-2 inches out from the reduction there should be a hole that a pin or in some a bolt goes through to tie the drive to the shaft.
Motor assembly
Thanks Bud, I'll check that in the morning!

RE: HELP! MAYDAY! S.O.S. EMERGENCY!

Is this a kitchen slide where it might be a drain line that is hanging up as it slides?
No, this slideout has the kitchen table and the sofa.

RE: HELP! MAYDAY! S.O.S. EMERGENCY!

Sounds like the shear pin(s) at the motor drive has broken. It catches on one side then breaks loose and catches again.
Bud, could you go into a little more detail about where those pins are and what they look like? Thanks!
