RE: Solar Help

I want to thank everyone for all there input. I think I am going to go with 2 90w panels. I talked to Sun Electronics and they have them in stock an I can pick them up.
Other questions: should I place a fuse between panels? What size?
Should I place a fuse between controller and battery? What size? On the positive wire?
Should I put an on/off switch on the system? Where?

RE: Solar Help

Yes I did make a big mistake on my last post...too many adult beverages I guess.
The 90 watt panels that I am looking have the following:
Vmpp 18.1
Impp. 4.96
Voc. 22.0
Isc. 5.30
Ir. 10
$ 124.20 X 2 = $ 248.40
The 190 watt single:
Vmp. 26
Imp. 7.63
Voc. 33
Isc. 7.89
$ 207.10
Do these appear to be good prices? The single 190w panel weighs 37lb the two 90w weigh 35.28lb

RE: Solar Help

I was looking at the Sun Electric site at the 190watt panel and the IMP was 7.89a & VMP 26.2. On the same page was a 90watt panel and the IMPP was 1.16a & VMPP 17.4.
What is the difference of IMP and IMPP and VMP and VMPP?

RE: Solar Help

Several have said that I should get 2 panels to total the necessary watts needed. I have no problem with that but when I look at the specs for lower watt panels the IMP goes way down also the volts. What is the effect on charging the batts? Also that means more brackets and more wire and more holes in the roof.

I was looking at the Sunelect site and the following panel I believe I could fit. Seems like a good price.

RE: Solar Help

Thanks for all the response to my post. I failed to mention that I run the generator usually about an hour a day also. The fridge is a Norcold DE3900 and the plate inside list 3.5a. It cycles and seems to run for a little less than its off time. I am just starting to gather info and you guys are a great help. Any suggestions on what brand of panels and where to buy would be appreciated. I live in the Phoenix area.
Thanks

Solar Help

I have an older Class B motorhome and have been thinking about solar.
I can boondock now for 2 days before I have to recharge my 125ah battery. The only thing that draws power is the 12V fridge which runs about half the time at 3.5A and a light for an hour at most. I have limited space on the roof. My question is: Would a 150W panel like the one here
Click
keep me charged and what controller would be the minimum I should use?
Let me thank you now for all the good info I have gotten from this site.

RE: 1996 Winnebago Rialta

The only things I would be concerned about are the followings:
One of the seats does not have the same pattern as other... meaning it has been replaced???
Does not have the smell of a vehicle that has not been taken care of. That means this owner has not had it for very long or would know if they have taken good care of it.
With all the work that has been done to it sounds like someone has picked it up for next to nothing and worked on it to resale. On a vehicle with only 90,000 miles all that work shouldn't have been needed if it had been routinely cared for.
I would be very cautious about buying without previous inspection.

RE: Backcountry Boondocking Pics-Class B?

I take my 'B' places I know I shouldn't but the rewards are most of the time great. I recently went 20 miles on a forest service road that should have been marked 4X4 only. We made it fine just took it slowly. You must be careful of ground clearance and pick your way. On one trip last month we drove to a place near a river, got out to check for a place to park for a couple of days and when we returned the B had sunk to the axle. Got pulled out by a 4X4 truck and proceeded to find another place. You can tell in the photo below that the road to our B is not very smooth. Be careful and have fun.

RE: Return battery without receipt?

Better yet scan in to your computer then you can print it when you need it. The receipts fade fast.

RE: Per the Denver Post: "Solar Panels Don't Work"

One factor that has not been mentioned. If wind and/or solar becomes affordable with widespread usage then the gov. will find a way to tax it's usage. And they will tax it very high to keep energy cost up. The government makes about 10 times as much on a gallon of gasoline as the oil companies do.

RE: Class B Campsite Photos - Let's See Them!

It doesn't get much better than this. Fishing was good also.
Bartlett Lake, AZ, one of the few lakes around here that you can disperse camp next to the water.

RE: Roadtrek introduces the RS E-TREK

McZippie, Good Link! When you think that the fuel cell cost over $5000 and $60 for a few days of methanol it sure doesn't make much sense.

This is all very interesting. McZippie, when you are calculating usage time are you including the DMFC input?

RE: 97 Dodge 2500 5.2 liter 97,000 miles runs hot?????

Something with the fan, water pump, radiator, hoses or timing. All will cause overheating. I have a 1996 Coach House with a 5.9 Dodge 360 and live in Phoenix...talk about hot. It has just turned 100,000 miles and it doesn't overheat. To get out of Phoenix we must climb some steep grades. I just returned from Yellowstone and took quite a few mountain passes and never got hot. I drive 65-70 mph.

We just spent one night in Logan Canyon on our trip to Yellowstone. I would like to go back and do some fishing.
Here I am standing at the edge of the river.

RE: Furnace Won't Light at High Elevation

My furnace does the same thing. At home (desert) where I don't need it, it lights fine. When we go to higher altitude where it gets cold at night, and do need it, it will not light. I have had mine out and apart so many times testing it I can do it blindfolded.(lol) If anyone has corrected this please let us know how you did it. I have read all kinds of explanations but none seem to work. I even read about propane formula being different at low altitudes being a problem but mine was filled in higher altitude. Mine will not light at 6000 ft. when the temp is 45°.
