RE: Riding Inside Travel Trailer?

Huh? Why not open a slide at a rest stop or Wal Mart if it's needed for your rig? I do it all the time. Also, it's only too hot sometimes and mainly in the summer. Back on subject, ridding in a trailer (of any kind) is a very bad idea. Mike A thought: If you would like to take a nap while STOPPED, in a rest area or Wally World parking lot, for example, that would be ok. Just don't run out any slideouts, awnings, etc. And it would probably be pretty hot, as you wouldn't be able to run a fan or a/c. You'd have trouble catching winks while underway though, due to the rough ride - and the other Darwin Award comments are appropriate here...Ever seen what a camping trailer looks like after it's been in a crash? (Think toothpicks.)

RE: Suburban 8.1 liter engine cutout

Yeah, I think the CPS is the most likely culprit. The symptoms last time didn't convince me but this time is almost a perfect match. I'll replace it and go from there. Thanks! Mike

Suburban 8.1 liter engine cutout

I had a problem with my Suburban on the last day of my three week, 5,200 mile summer vacation. I was towing at 65 miles in level terrain at about 400' elevation. The ambient air temperature was quite hot at 102 degrees. I saw the cruise control light go out and we started to slow. I fed in some gas and got no response. I put the transmission in neutral but I remember noting that the revs didn't drop to zero. I pulled over to the side and felt the brake pedal harden as the engine stopped spinning. The engine would not restart on the first attempt. I waited a minute or two and then it fired right back up. I continued on and had no more issues, including a steep climb up the Grapevine. This happened after we'd been driving for more than eight hours. I had a little more than a quarter of a tank at the time (the computer indicated an 80 mile range). Water temperature was fine as were all the other gauges. Some of you may recall another issue I had with this Suburban a few months ago... Suburban 8.1 liter breakdown puzzle (long) The engine cutout was very similar but the conditions, fuel type and fuel level are all different. I had more fuel this time and it was not 10% ethanol. It was hot but I was not at high altitude or climbing a grade. The engine refired almost immediately this time as well. I'm pretty stumped. I haven't had a chance to check for codes yet but there were none last time and I don't expect to find anything. The "Check Engine" light is not on. One thing I can think of is that both times the underhood temperatures were very high (even though the engine temperatures were fine). I wonder if there is a fuel or ignition system component that may be failing in the heat? Thoughts? Mike

RE: dometic refrigator recall....what a farce...ripoff

The problem with Dometic's kit is that it does not address the root cause. It's simply designed to contain the fire that can occur when the part fails. It's a very poor solution and it's a sad state of affairs that they can get away with it. Mike

RE: Awning..How Often Do You Put Yours Out?

I almost always put my awning out when weekend camping. It doesn't feel like I'm setup and camping without it! Mike

RE: Why would they _not_ pull over?

I can think of two things... either the driver was oblivious or inconsiderate. Either way, it's inexcusable. I'll avoid a bad turnout too but zero out of fourteen is something more. Mike

RE: Learn from my tire blow out experience

Good timing. I was just going through my tools to make sure I had everything before a three week trip. Spare tire at full pressure... check Socket and tool set... check Air compressor... check Breaker bar... check Cordless impact wrench... check Ton-o-leveling blocks... check ERS card... check! Mike

RE: Oxygenics shower head?

I was pretty skeptical but gave one a shot and it does indeed work. Less water consumption with good spray velocity. I've been very please. Mike

RE: Overnighting near St. George Utah

Thanks again. We'll be getting in very late so any parking lot is fine by me. The Welcome Center looks perfect. We're going to pull in, sleep and head out first thing in the morning. Mike

RE: Olympic National Park in a 32' trailer

I was thinking of staying on the north side. I did some more research and we'll probably have better luck at a commercial campground in Port Angeles. I also noticed that I posted in the wrong forum... darn late night computing! Mike

RE: Overnighting near St. George Utah

Ahhhh, it's the Welcome Center! Thanks for the link. Pretty silly that they don't list it with the rest areas. The folks at the Cracker Barrel mentioned that lot across the street. It seems like overnighting is illegal in St. George though so I don't know how strong the chance of getting rousted is. Mike

Olympic National Park in a 32' trailer

I think we're going to add a day in Olympic National Park to our summer trip plans. Can anyone suggest a good place to stay with a large rig (32' travel trailer)? Thanks! Mike

Overnighting near St. George Utah

We're planning on stopping neat St. George Utah on the first night of our summer trip. We expect to get in pretty late and leave early. I know that the Wal-Marts are off limits and the Cracker Barrel in down was also iffty. I see on the satellite and in trucker guides that there is a very large rest stop just over the border from Arizona. It's not listed with the other rest areas on the Utah DOT site. Does anyone know anything about this location? I'd be happier staying there than the big dirt lot a few miles back of Black Rock Canyon. Thanks! Mike

RE: AC and Honda eu2000i generator

I've run my Dometic DuoTherm 15,000 BTU air conditioner off a single EU2000i at 4,500' altitude. I first turned off every breaker but the main and AC (taking the refrigerator and converter out of the loop) and pre-started the fan on low. The voltage was good and the AC ran fine. I wouldn't do it on a regular basis but it can work in a pinch. Mike

RE: Using a UPS as a mobile inverter

Thanks for all the feedback. The low end BackUPS units from APC are all MSW. However, older SmartUPS units are easy to come by used and have sine wave inverters. I have a bunch of SU700 units sitting around but they're overkill for my application. Unfortunately, my LCD TV hates MSW inverters so I'm going to have to spring for a 150-300w model if I want to watch TV without starting the generator.

RE: Oregon Mountains

I'm planning on going this route from north to south this summer as well. I did some research before and it seemed like it would be fine towing my 32' trailer. There is an old thread as well... https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/19029344.cfm Mike

RE: Power management...Honda EU2000i

I've run my Dometic DuoTherm 15,000 BTU air conditioner off a single EU2000i multiple times. That includes testing at 4,500'. The key is to shut off every breaker except the main and the AC. Mike

Using a UPS as a mobile inverter

Has anyone ever used (or thought about using) a UPS as an inverter? I was doing some work today and my gaze fell upon several UPS units we had at the shop with bad batteries. These range from small power strip style 280 watt units all the way up to 750 and 1000 watt boxes. I'm sitting there looking at them and it occurs to me that you could remove the 12v battery and run the leads directly to the battery bank in your rig. Bingo... instant high quality inverter. The only thing that would concern me is the duty cycle. Smaller UPS units typically are designed with short run times (based on battery capacity) and may not hold up to long operating stints. Thoughts? Mike

RE: Scissor Jacks?

I got rid of my scissor jacks and went with four BAL "C" jack stabilizers. They control side to side movement very well. I also added a set of BAL locking arms on the front jacks to help the chocks control fore and aft movement. I recycled two of my scissor jacks and placed them just forward of the axles to take the bounce out of the tires and suspension. I'm now a happy camper! Mike
