RE: Full Time

We just went full-time about two months ago. I can relate to the anxiety you have right now. Asking questions on this Forum is a great way to learn about the full-timing lifestyle.
I just sent you an email. Hope it helps.

RE: Full-time Indefinitely

If you want to full-time you will find a way to make it work. We have been full-timers for about two months and have met many different people with many different jobs - or no job. Some have to work, some want to work to stay busy.
In the first month our expenses were more than anticipated and this month isn't looking much better - but I think we will do better as time goes on because we want to continue to be full-timers.
I just sent you a PM too.

RE: So who's in the Snowbird class of 09/10

This is our first year as Snowbirds. Just arrived in Jacksonville, FL for a few days and then heading south - somewhere below Orlando. Hoping to find an RV park (not a campground) with concrete parking/patio, (already tired of gravel and mud from so much rain up north), a nice pool, palm trees and sunshine for some R & R. We'll probably stay in Florida for the winter or may end up heading west to South Texas. We love being full-timers now and not having a schedule.

Privately Owned Sites

As a beginner full-timer, I'm wondering if there is a website(s) that lists lots available for rent (month or more) from individual lot owners. This year I would be interested in Florida - next year Texas. Any suggestions?

RE: Length of units

We have been full-timing now for 4 weeks, so we are newbies.
What we learned:
We picked the right motor home for us. 40' with 4 slides provided us with a washer/dryer and ample storage. It drives and rides great and it feels like "home" to us. We've never had a moment where we wish the MH was larger or smaller.
Parking it in smaller RV parks is challenging. We've had two out of four RV parks with narrow sites and roads, too many trees and branches (paint scratches and no satellite reception), and rain-soaked sites. My goal is to do better research ahead of time to find "big rig" RV parks - it will be less stressful.
My newbie advice - Continue to ask advice or suggestions from full-timers. Pick an RV that the driver(s) will feel safe and confident driving, backing and parking (I recommend an RV driving course). Remember that it is your "home" so pick one where you will comfortable and content within your budget. Do as much research as possible ahead of time regarding roads and RV parks suitable for the RV you pick.

RE: How long have you been Full-timing ?

We have been full-timers for 4 weeks.
Our ages are 59 and 57
Children are grown now
We selected a motor home. We wanted a diesel pusher with four slides. It is our second Tiffin product and we are very, very happy with it. It feels like home to us. Floor tile, leather furniture, and very nice kitchen - just like our house had. Choose what you will enjoy driving, feel safe and comfortable in.

RE: New to fulltiming

We have been "official full-timers" since October 1. I'm already saying things like "Let's go home" and that means back to the motor home. It helps that we love our new "home" and I have no desire to go back to the "house".

Cricket Golf Cart

We just recently became full-timers and have heard about a golf cart that can fold up/disasseble and fit in the back of our Honda CRV. Does anyone have one of these golf carts or know of any other brand that would fit in our Honda CRV?

RE: scheduled medical visits

Be sure you know how your medical/prescription insurance coverage works in other areas. For instance, I use mail order for prescriptions and can order online and designate the shipping address wherever I happen to be. Mail order has less expensive co-pays for me...but I am beginning to think the convenience of a Walgreens might be better even though slighly more expensive re: co-pays.
My DH and I both have to get blood work done every three months. Our insurance will allow us to have that blood work done at a particular lab that has many locations nationwide. Our primary doctor will fax his lab request directly to the lab that we want to use in a particular town. The results are sent back to our primary doctor in our previous home state. I think that is going to work fine except I normally have an office visit with my doctor to review my results and a small physical pertaining to my rheumatoid arthritis (joint movement and pain measurements). Our insurance will not pay for out-of-area physician visits - we have to return to our previous "home" location for doctor visits. This isn't going to work well because we don't want to return there every three months. Hopefully we can just return once a year and that will be enough. For simple problems we can use an out-of-area urgent care facility.
Hope you can work out your areas of concern.

RE: Full-Timers - Screened Rooms

Thanks for the replies. We've decided to wait awhile and see how often we could actually use one. We've only been full-timers 4 days so it's too soon to know what we will really want I guess.

RE: New to the full time life

The above replies gave you very good information. Asking questions is part of eventually becoming full-timers. Over the years I've asked many of them and, finally, today we became official full-timers when the house closed. You will get lots of good advice and opinions on this forum.
I've documented our journey to becoming full-timers in my blog. It includes a budget we are starting with, start-up costs, and will included monthly expenses starting with the month of October. Maybe some of our "history" will be helpful to you. I've learned so much from reading blogs of current full-timers.
Enjoy the planning!

RE: How many of us are waiting for the SOLD sign?

Here's our story. In January 2009 we decided we wanted to be full-timers. First realtor said $199,000 would be what we would get. We picked another realtor who said he would try his best to get as much as possible and felt $199,000 was too low. He suggested trying $225,000 - not many lookers. Finally lowered it to $215,000. He apparently advertised well as we had "lookers" most every week. Finally got a contract for $210,000 and closing is September 30.
We felt we would have gotten $225,000 a couple of years ago, but we now consider ourselves lucky that it even sold in this crazy market. Our area has builders drastically dropping new home prices, there are still tons of foreclosures/bankruptcies, and we had an inground pool and cold weather is heading our way. We knew we needed to sell it and just cut our losses and move on. IMO, it is going to be a long time before our area recovers from this horrible housing situation.
We are hitting the road Saturday! Hope everyone else can get their house sold soon too.

Full-Timers - Screened Rooms

For those of you who are full-timers, can you give your opinion on whether a screened room (such as a First Up from Walmart) is something you actually use while full-timing?
DH said he will miss our covered patio at our house and being able to sit outside in the rain. I think he might enjoy having a screened in room when we start full-timing next weekend.
I'm considering buying a First Up from Walmart today, along with the screening to keep out bugs.
Our plan for full-timing is to stay in one location for at least a month and based on that, I think we would enjoy a screened room.
Thanks for your opinions and comments.

RE: House Finally Sold, Hopefully

Thanks so much for the well wishes (loved the champagne bottle!).
Hope to meet you full-time newbies heading to the Gypsy Journal rally!
Here n There - I just know DH is going to blast the air horn when we pull out for the driveway and neighborhood for the last time!
Before we got the contract on the house we had made plans to take a break and spend 5 days away from our driveway. So this morning we are waking up to a view of the lake at Defeated Creek campground. And it's just an example of other beautiful places we'll see in the future!

RE: Has the day finally come?

When I started reading your post, I thought it was one of mine! We have lived in the driveway for the past 3 months waiting on the house to sell - finally getting out of the driveway on September 26 and the house closes on September 30.
Like others said, this is such an exciting time and so many adventures are just around the corner for all of us hitting the road.
Enjoy your travels and the memories you are making!
