RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

As mentioned above, buying six tires rather than four costs you 50% more. Also, it's a real pain to air up those inside tires. More rolling resistance means poorer fuel mileage. Having said all that, I'm glad I bought my dually.

RE: 1150 vs. 990

Call the AF factory and see what they recommend. I did so and they told me (at the time) that the 990 was the largest unit they recommended for my crew cab long bed diesel dually.

RE: Do I really need a Dually?

My 990 is on a dually. I think you'll be much happier if you do the same.

RE: would you switch

Elkhornsun makes a good point, but I have the same truck and it's a really good vehicle. With the dually and 4WD, my mileage experience is about 14-15 unloaded and 10-11 loaded, sometimes more, sometimes less. I only have about 80K on the clock and the motor and tranny run strong.

RE: Our custom true flatbed truck camper build thread

Line-X or something similar might not be a bad idea as far as durability and waterproofing goes, but it seems to me that such an uneven granulated surface would be difficult to clean, remove bugs from, etc. I could be wrong.

RE: The Weights are In from my SRW. Think I need a dually

Get the dually, you'll be amazed at the difference. Read prior threads on this subject.

RE: have questions about used truck and camper

Good decision, Mote. 4x4 is definitely the ticket unless you plan to stay on the pavement. I think a smaller camper would be preferable as well.

RE: Lowest gas prices you remember.

In the mid '60's in the St. Louis area, "gas wars" would result in prices of .15 to .19 per gallon. My '63 Impala SS convertible 327 4 speed could get 20 mpg cruising at 60 or 65. I was making $1.95 per hour working at Kroger after school. Those were the days.

RE: Our custom true flatbed truck camper build thread

Having had two aluminum RV's, I learned the hard way that aluminum dents from hail or rocks. You might want to consider alternatives.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

Dodgeavion, when I had my C-10, I looked into - more accurately thought about - extending the cabover, but a call to Cayo discouraged me. Probably all for the best, though, for I have realized that I am a lot better at starting projects than I am at finishing them.
I hope you do it, I think it's a great idea. Take lots of pictures.

RE: What mistakes have you made that might help others...?

When an RV newbie many years ago, I wired up a plug-in post incorrectly for 220, not realizing that the 30 amp plug was 120 volt. Oops, an expensive mistake. Burned out most everything on that TT.
Not securing TC fold up steps at the top with a clamp, rather than just having it sit in the hanger. ( I have a nasty scar for that mistake).
Not replacing TT tires that were 6 years old, but showed little signs of wear.
Those were some of the more costly RV mistakes I've made.

RE: Tag Outs

I've used tags like this, write on 'em with a Sharpie. Works well, durable.

RE: What truck camper ovens are good for

Every RV I've owned in the last 20 years has had an oven ... but I must admit, I've never used any of 'em, except for storage.
This thread is making me rethink that mind set. Do they use much propane?

RE: Updates...and another question.

Factory swaybars came on my 01 F350, but I upgraded to heavier duty ones. Solid as a rock, don't need stable loads. See equipment in sig below.
And I have a much heavier camper.

RE: Truck Camper Slideouts - Are They Really Worth It?

Like several others have said, the slide makes all the difference in the world. If $$ were no object, I would buy a multislide Chalet. We found a non slide TC to be too small.

RE: Dealer truck recommendations for AF truck camper

That's what AF told us in 2009, resulting in our purchase of the 990 (coincidentally from American RV).

SimplyGib, I think you were being simply glib. I'm glad you've had such great experiences down south, but that in no way mitigates the terrible, terrible trip which is the subject of this thread.
