"My Roadtrek" website has closed

After 11 years I have decided to close my website. I want to thank everyone for all the kind words, and support over the years. I will still be around, but "My Roadtrek" has left the building. http://bravellir.com/gallery/d/6856-1/salute.gif width=50

RE: Exercising a propane generator.

Heh, Davydd, Minnesota used to be one of my favourite destinations.I should stop by(I am heading that way) this summer so you can check my oil level.Just joking.I get RV service to check it when it is de-winterized. Re periodic starting of our propane Onan genset, as I have stated elsewhere on RV.NET, I run it 10 mins or so and I see no explainable/engineering-wise need to run it more than that.Maybe someone can provide proof of the need: I am a Canadian with a Missouri-like doubting-Thomas pre-disposition. The 2 hour exercise period is for generators, propane, or gas, that have sat for a month. The 30 min warm up once a month is for gen-sets that are used frequently during the month. If you are only running the gen. for ten minutes every month, that will not heat it up enough to evaporate the water, and oil the windings. There are still people who believe, letting a gas car engine idle for 10 minutes or more to warm it up, doesn't hurt it, but it does. Well everyone should now have enough information to decide for themselves how to take care of their generator. Fastpaddler, I think you and Davydd could have a beautiful Bromance. :B

RE: Exercising a propane generator.

All I know is that Onan states all three types of generators should be ran for a 2 hour period once a month. I suspect this is for water evaporation, and lubrication, as well as carb cleaning. I was a helicopter mechanic, and not a generator mechanic, but I would think exercising the gen. for 2 hours a month could only be good for it, and as far as the warranty goes, why take the chance. I know for gas gens. Onan states warranty will not cover carb gumming if the gen-set has not been exercised, and they do look at the hours in these cases. Your correct, I have not read anything about internal rust voiding the warranty, but again, why take the chance. I know you only have something like 8 hrs on yours, but being from a damp climate, I would think you would want to do all you could to make sure all the moisture was evaporated. Rust is very bad for internal engine parts. I think the 30 min warm-up is correct, as long as the gen-set gets ran on a frequent basis, like several times a week.

RE: Leisure van owner needs input on installing solar panels

Are there any Leisure Van owners who have installed solar panels? Do you have a Unity? If so you might want to have the Mod move this to the Class C forum.

RE: fantastic fan reverse air flow

"Fan-Tastic Vent recommends using only UltraBreeze Vent Covers for your Fan-Tastic Vent. UltraBreeze Vent Covers allow up to 100% airflow. The use of other vent covers greatly restricts airflow (by up to 75%), causing accumulation of dust and increased sound levels." How true this is I have no idea.

RE: Exercising a propane generator.

Thanks for reminding me why our unit does not have a generator. During the four years we had a Class C, its generator was only run twice while on trips for a total of less than an hour. But every month, I had to go out there run the thing. It's been six years since since we got the Sportsmobile and we have never regretted not having a generator installed. My post was about exercising a propane generator, so start your own thread, and please don't take mine off topic. Thank you

Exercising a propane generator.

I thought I would post this to clear up some misconceptions as to why a propane generator needs to be exercised. Type of fuel is only one factor. EXERCISING THE PROPANE GENSET "Exercise the genset at least 2 hours each month if use is infrequent. Run the genset at approximately 1/2 rated power. See LOADING THE GENSET (Page 9). A single two hour exercise period is better than several shorter periods. Exercising a genset drives off moisture, re-lubri-cates the engine, and removes oxides from electrical con-tacts and generator slip rings. The result is better starting, more reliable operation and longer engine life." Onan does check the hours on the gen-set, and too few hours could void the warranty. Average of 24 hrs a year will assure warranty service. Exercising a gas gen-set is even more important these days because of ethanol, but do not assume just because you have a propane generator it doesn't need the recommended run time. RE: fantastic fan reverse air flow

Mine would reopen after the sensor dried, didn't take very long, and if I remember right, you could switch the rain sensor off, or on.

RE: Home network over electric line

Well, if you read my post, I said POE stands for "Point Of Entry", and the filters are called POE filters on the Internet, so I don't how much planer I can make it, "to not confuse some people"

RE: Home network over electric line

Got the Actiontec MoCA adapters today, and installation was a snap. Since I'm only using them for my Slingbox connection, I didn't do any other testing except to make sure the Slingbox worked and picture quality was good, which it was. The adapters have a coax in, and an out ( think splitter) for connecting the cable back to the video source. There was no loss of video quality, at least none that I could notice. One important thing, before installing any MoCA device, make sure you add a POE filter (point of entry) to the cable line where it enters the house. This prevents any close neighbors with a MoCA adapter from being able to access your network. The POE filters are a little hard to find, I got mine from TIVO for $9 and $8.50 for shipping. Shipping is a rip off, as it could have been put in an envelope, but the only other place I could find one was Ebay, and I felt more comfortable going with TIVO. Bottom line, if you have cable, or satellite, MoCA is a better ( although a little more expensive) way to add an Ethernet connection, than using a home wire adapter. http://www.tivo.com/assets/images/buytivo/products/tivogear/accessories/moca-poe-filter/LPF-M3-300.jpg width=200 POE Filter

It's plastic it can be welded. Take it to a body shop that does this type of work.

RE: Home network over electric line

I just ordered a pair of Actiontec's MoCA adapters from Amazon. I will post an update when I get them hooked up. For anyone not following the thread, these are Ethernet over coax, not home wire adapters.

RE: New "Advanced" Class B

Since I was the op, I had just asked Admin to close this thread because a couple of members had hijacked it. I would like to keep it open, and on topic. I also ask that robwen, being an employee of Advanced RV not post to this thread. Its only fair, since other companies, are not allowed to promote their products on RV.Net. RE: Charging House Batteries with the Battery Tender Junior

With the battery separator the best thing to do is hook up the shore power to a digital programmable timer and set it to run for 12- 16 hours once a week on the Chevy units. That will keep BOTH the engine and aux batteries charged, unless the system has been changed. The TrippLite unit is a battery charger and will charge without causing any problems. Also, the battery separator is designed to "trigger" at 13.2 volts, so if one battery gets above that voltage and the other is below, it allows the excess voltage to "spill over" into the other battery(ies). I expect the Battery Tender will never get the engine battery above 13.2, so it will never charge the aux batts. Marco told you pretty much the same thing on his forum. Just what else do you want to know? The fact that you thought you had 24 volts from 2, 6 volt batteries, still makes me question if you should be doing any wiring to your electrical system.

RE: Charging House Batteries with the Battery Tender Junior

Why in the world would you want to charge the batteries with a separate battery charger? Your Rt's inverter/ charger will charge both the coach batteries, and the chassis battery when plugged into shore power. If you don't want to leave it plugged in all the time, just put a timer on on it, and set it to charge for 12 or so hours once a week. It seems your problems started when you wired your Ham Radio directly to the batteries, are you sure you did that correctly, I only ask because it seems if you can't tell a 6 volt battery from a 12 volt one.
