RE: MAGICJACK

Thanks 1492. I had seen most of thest but not the SkypeKey product. I was really looking for something compact like the Skypekey, not another box to tote around. After researching the SkypeKey today, it looks as if there may be problems with it regarding which version of Skype is being used. As I said earlier, I may just buy a dedicated Skype Phone that naturally connects via USB. Thanks again!

RE: MAGICJACK

"USB to RJ11 are readily available" Other than the one you pictured..I cannot find anything else. Maybe I'm getting ahead of things here. What I was envisioning is something that looks like a memory stick with a RJ11 jack on the outer end. I use Skype, have a Skype number, have been pleased with the service, and see no need to change. I normally use a headset that works fine. I simply wanted to be able to plug an existing phone into the computer to use if i get tired of the headset. I guess I will buy a Skype phone from them to use for that.

RE: MAGICJACK

I have had MJ and Vz aircard for 2 years and it works okay as long I have good upload speeds. When used only with WiFi, it depends on the quality of the signal. Usually, it works fine. I also use GoogleVoice with it. For some reason, calls made with GV/MJ are invariable better than MJ alone. I'm looking for a USB Phone Jack to use a standard phone with Skype. Samarai you say you are using MJ with GoogleVoice. Can you use the MJ adapter without using the MJ service? Or does anyone know of another product?

RE: Best Free Antivirus Software

FYI - for those seeking a good or great (free) antivirus program, here's my recommendation: check out Gizmo's 'Best Free Antivirus Software'. If you're not familiar with Ian "Gizmo" Richards or have never heard of his web site, then read this first. Highly recommended! Gizmo's is great! I was looking for a movie editing program. I spend all this time googling around the internet, and here a great site for all this stuff posted right here on RV Net. Thanks!

RE: Personal RV Travel blogs

We have also used Blogger for several years but generally have found that upload and showing pictures can be a pain. Maybe i'm just too picky in the way i want them to be displayed. I also use Dotphoto.com, but recently have begun using Picassa as it seems easier to use. Now I have to decide whether to keep the old stuff on Dotphoto, or move it to Picassa.

RE: "You can't stay here, your trailer is too old."

This has to be one of the most entertaining threads on the forum. Thanks!

RE: Key West at Christmas

The Duval Street crawl is a must! Mallory Square at sunset..it is touristy, but we ARE tourist. Ricky's Blue Haven for any meal. Walk up to the corner of Caroline and William for a grouper sandwich at B.O.'s Fishwagon. For authentic Cuban food go to El Siboney on Catherine Street. If you have a car, drive out to MM20 for dinner at Mangrove Mama's. Wish we were there!!!

RE: First timer

I too would want to take a shorter trip FIRST time out. (2nd time out... take off!) Some of the reasons have been stated. In our very first TT many years ago, we thought about a long trip first, then decided to go to a local park that was only about 30 miles from home. Glad we did. On the way home a tire blew out on the TT. Thankfully we were near folks we know.. tire shop, etc. It also gave me the feel for the way the truck/trailer combo worked without being concerned about strange territory at the same time. And as I recall, we made several trips to the local camping supply store that weekend as well. Our next trip was in the 400 mile range and it went just fine! It will be an awesome way to travel with your family. Happy Travels!

RE: Starting a Get-to-gether?

If you like the unspoiled beaches like we do, you will enjoy it. There is not much more around there. Stay in the Gulf Breeze beach front area. They have awesome seafood in the area. Best oysters ever, and thats comming from someone who loves their VA/NC/SC seafood! And take bug spray for the hour or so around sunset.

RE: Starting a Get-to-gether?

Hey all, we just read your post cause I was looking to start a post about the same thing. We dont want to start a "group", but do want to meet up with others similar to us to go RVing occasionally. We live in NC, in our mid 50s, children grown up, and have no friends locally that RV. Not that we want to tag team everywhere we go, but it would be nice to go someplace once in a while with folks that have similar interest. Seems like all the groups I'v looked at through Good Sam or FMCA are all retired folks. Any other ideas about this topic?

RE: Trip Report: TX & LA

Thanks lizbard.. we did go to Fredricksburg, I just didnt want to put all the details in my trip report. Had lunch at a German bakery there and some peach ice cream for desert! We have not been to the Johnson Ranch, but on a previous trip I went to Johnson City to the LBJ birthplace. I love your state too!

Trip Report: TX & LA

We just returned from a 16 day trip from NC to Texas - Austin & Corpus Christi, then along the coast of LA to Southern Lousiania (Acadiana.) So many folks on this forum helped with suggestions and info, I wanted to give a brief trip report. We drove pretty hard over 2 1/2 days to get from NC to near Austin. We stayed at Cottonwood Creek RV Park in Dripping Springs TX. This is a nice little park in the edge of hill country between Austin, Blanco, and Fredricksburg. We spend one day driving down to San Antonio to take in the Riverwalk area and El Mercado. The drive through the Guadelupe River valley to Lost Maples State Park was very scenic. Next stop was Mustang Island State Park in Port Aransas. The beaches there are beautiful despite the recent Red Tide. Most of the beaches were clean. The most interesting thing about the area is the hard packed sand beach which is used just like a road. Mustand Island SP is a large paved parking lot on the island between the dunes and the road, but was good for us for a couple of days. Pioneer and Gulf Waters are in the same area and may be more suitable if you are looking for more aminities. Both looked nice from our ride by. Driving up the beach road from Surfside Beach near Freeport to High Island was quite an experience. The roads are in good shape along the beach and the 2 free ferries were quick and easy and no problem for the motorhome and toad. We were not even the largest rig on them with large 18 wheelers using the ferries too. The devastation left by Hurricane Ike 2 years ago is unbelievable! There is a toll bridge going into the Galveston area on Hwy 87. It costs $2. What was a little wierd, was that it has a toll collection box like one of drawers you find on a bank drive through, that the toll taker pushes out for you to put your money in. From the drivers window of the motorhome it was about 5 feet down. With the wind blowing at about 20 knots, those 2 $1 bills would have still been going! Yet when the toll taker came out to get the 2 bucks from me, he fussed at me saying he was not supposed to come out and take the money. I'm still not sure what I was supposed to do other than park the MH in the lane blocking traffic, get out and go pay. Before getting on Hwy 82 in Port Arthur heading East along the beach, be sure you have enough fuel to get you to Abbeville LA. Again it was a very isloated coast road, and whatever business were there before Ike are now only clean cement pads and driveways. We stayed at the Cypress Bayou Casino in Charenton LA. It was an outstanding bargin at $10 per night, and they give you $10 each credit for the casino. The park is very well maintained, paved sites with patios, picnic tables and a shuttle to the casino. The only problem we had was with a group of construction workers that were staying there. Saturday morning at 2:00 AM the ruckus started. Fighting, drunken cursing, and profanity for about 2 hours before they passed out and got quiet...then started again at 9:00 AM Saturday morning. Security guards didn't do anything about it. When we left Sat morning we called the RV park office to let them know. We were promised a call back by the manager but they never called. Had it not been for that it was a nice place and I would consider it again betting that our experience was an isolated event. In summary, Texas Hill country is awesome, can't wait to go back and really spend some time there. The Texas coast is a great place to visit too, however it is different from Florida or the Atlantic beaches in SC. Cajun country is very interesting and a place you definitely want to see and sample the cusine, but the LA roads are bone jarring and have to be among the worst in the country. Here is a picture of Mustang Island State Park: http://lh5.ggpht.com/_xW5eUJTY4-k/SvSFJq8SU5I/AAAAAAAAAgg/f-vQ4P63XR0/s400/MISP2.jpg I have FINALLY updated out blog (link in signature below) with some pictures. Hope this helps others...happy travels!

RE: Freeport Texas to High Island

We just returned home from our trip to TX/LA coast. Great trip with lots of good seafood eaten along the way. We took Hwy 87 from Surfside Beach all the way to High Island including the Galveston Ferry with no problems. Also Hwy 82 from Port Arthur to Abbeville LA. and the free ferry at Cameron LA. Just be sure to fill up with fuel before leaving Port Arthur.

RE: Red Tide on TX Coast?

We have been at Mustang Island SP for the past 2 days. The state park beach and the beaches at Port Aransas seem fine and clean. This morning we drove down to Malaquite Beach CG in the Padre Island National Seashore, and drove south on the beach for 3 or 4 miles. There still seem to be a lot of dead fish there but nothing noticable in the surf.

RE: Cottonwood Creek - Dripping Springs TX

Drippin..thanks for the tip on the Apple Bakery in Blanco. My DW went down there one day last week and brought back a great apple cake...didn't last long though. We didn't realize this Lance Armstrong Foundation ride is going on this weekend. Good Luck getting around with all the road closures!

RE: Red Tide on TX Coast?

thanks for all the replies. We are headed that way on Monday. Hopefully the recent storms and the cold front has pushed it all back out. If anyone has any more recent info, let me know.

Red Tide on TX Coast?

The NPS web site mentions a red tide from Port Aransas to SPI. Has anyone been there to see how bad it is? How long does it usually last? We are headed there this Sunday for a few days, planning on staying at Mustang Island SP.

RE: Cottonwood Creek - Dripping Springs TX

Cottonwood Creek is more of a small RV park built on an old ranch. It only has about 25 or 30 spaces.. all gravel pads with good landscaping. Several are on the creek that runs through the property. I dont think they allow open fires. Thre is no bathhouse facility so all must be self contained. They do have a good laundry facility and a small community house with a deck/outdoor kithen for gathering. They have free WiFi and it works great! We chose this because of its proximity to Dripping Springs and it the WiFi. It is a nice quiet little place with the owner/operator on site. Last night we passed a neat looking RV park just down the road a few more miles from here on FM165 near Blanco. Blanco Settlement RV park is right on the Blanco River with about 15 or 20 sites - all right on the river there. Dont know anything about it other than that it looks like a nice spot.

RE: Cottonwood Creek - Dripping Springs TX

Thanks for the recommendations and directions Drippin... we were thinging about making that run up to Bee Cave area to eat at Rosie's. We have yet to make the Left out of the RV park to head down toward Blanco. Hopefully we will go down that way later in the week. If the weather geeks are right, looks like Wednesday will be a wash out!

RE: Gamble Rogers, site 33. Is it really 20'?

The 2nd section past the bathhouse sites are very small, just right for PUP or tents, but nothing bigger than that. The first section has much larger spaces.
