RE: Wiper motor for 1991 Itasca 30ft

There are lot of possible setups to wiper motors.
Left or Right hand.
Dynamic park.
Shaft style.
Don't guess and get the wrong one. I got a nice replacement from these folks.

RE: Exhaust manifold gaskets / Ford 460

I have another question......
How about "Wrapping" the headers?
Have any of you done this?
Is there any down side?
I think you will find that using header wrap will void any warranty as it will hold moisture and prematurely rust them.
Wrap is for racers that replace their headers every few seasons.
Coated headers is the only way to go..

RE: Shhhh! Quiet that Motor - Ford F53

I'm with Eric and David. I used the "cheap" foil faced stuff and it did a fine job of cutting back on the roar. E-Z to put on and cheap compared to some of the hi-tech products out there. Got mine thru JCW.

RE: I was just wondering (Fuel Question)

The OP's first question is why is Plus grade cheaper than Regular in the Mid-West. Are there any Midwesters out there that know why? Curious minds want to know. Here in the Pacific NW, Plus costs more.
As to octane, more may not be better, but modern engines are pretty adaptable. I have an '08 Chrysler 300 with a V6 and the manual basically says that 87 octane is fine but it will have slightly better performance with 89. I'm a cheap bugger so it only drinks Regular.

RE: AC Service

A 92 probably uses R12 witch the outlawed in 93 if I rember right so I would replace it just my 2 cents if you have to spend much on it.
They did not use R 12 in any 120 operated system They used R 22. Doug
Agreed. The roof air uses R22 and is not easily user serviceable like the engine driven dash air. Beyond cleaning and perhaps replacing a bad start capacitor, requires a service tech or replacement.

RE: What transmission do I have?

Ford actually updated the fluid recommendation to use Mercon V (five) which is a synth blend. Adding a second trans cooler is recommended especially if you will be towing and / or in the mountains.
FYI, you should have a drain plug on the torque converter. Pull the rubber plug on the bottom of the bell housing and turn the engine until the drain plug appears at the access hole.

RE: 460 Engine Scanner

Is there a similar reader/scanner for 1989 460 FI?
Above message from kaz says he uses the same scanner on his '89 460.

RE: Made it home, Holiday Rambler

what kind of fluid can I put into it? I was told Dextron,, but I don't believe that. Is it true? I have some now. but what is the proper fluid for this motorhome?
If you mean the power stering fluid, then yes, Dexron/Mercon compatible fluid should be fine or there are also specific power steering fluids out there. Obviously this does NOT apply to the brake system itself. Putting tranny fluid in your master cylinder reservoir would be mega bad. :o

RE: Should you travel with a full tank of Gas?

Hi Lenny,
If your gas tank is full or not when you travel is not going to affect your MPG. I checked your Profile and see you have a 38' gasser so you are probably well over 20,000 pounds of weight. A few hundred pounds of gas one way or the other is not going to make a difference. Besides, if you start your trip full, how long does it take to get to 1/2 tank. Not long - right? Fill 'er up and enjoy the ride!

RE: 96 Bounder 460 exhaust questions

Garand1 - Flex joint in the exhaust is not common on the "old school" motors and as mentioned is not the reason for the broken exhaust bolt. At a bare minimum you should replace the factory muffler with something more free-flowing but those manifolds are simply too restrictive when our 460s are breathing hard. The heat builds up to cherry red-hot, manifolds expand and bolts start poppin'. Its a sad old story we've heard time and again. Replacement manifolds have elongated bolt holes to keep the bolts from shearing off but they still don't flow worth beans.
If you plan to remove the manifolds, just expect more broken bolts and be thankful if they all come out in one piece. I got lucky when I put on my headers but some folks don't.

RE: 460 Engine Scanner

Ford F53 Class A chassis were OBD-I thru 1997 model year. There was a gross vehicle weight exemption for the 1996 changeover date and Ford used it. Also exempt from catalytic converter use so no cat on the the mid-90's F53s.
BTW, that Equus reader is a great unit. The only one worth buying unless you move up to a $300+ pro-diagnostic model.

RE: Made it home, Holiday Rambler

Hi shaneperch.
Is this "Holiday Rambler" the 1982 Imperial you previously posted about?
As I recall that was a Chev 454 gas chassis so your wipers likely ARE electric.
Not sure on the older gas but most bigger gassers have hydraulically boosted power brakes that are driven by the power steering pump. Obviously a properly functioning pump is critical if that is what you have. That could be where the "whine" is coming from if it is low on fluid.
Best of luck getting all the kinks straightened out.

RE: 460 exhaust manifolds

Popeye, those painted Hedman headers will give you a definite boost but if you are in an area that requires a smog check those headers are not compliant. I would recommed you have the headers stripped of the factory paint as it is there mainly to keep them from rusting between the factory and your doorstep. Have them ceramic coated and they'll last a long time and run cooler.
Better - if Hedman still makes them, I have the Elite series F53 headers which have heavier tubing, thicker flanges and come factory coated. They are also smog certified as they have the AIR and O2 fittings and are a 2-into-1 like factory pipes. Unfortunately, last I checked, Summit no longers lists those but Hedman might still make them on a special order.

RE: 1982 Holiday Rambler Imperial

An early 80's Chevy chassis will have the Turbo400 trans. It is a 3 speed, no overdrive. They have a vacuum modulator on the passenger side of the tranny that controls the shift points. If it is bad or if the vacuum line has come loose or the rubber hose is split, the trans will shift very late (high RPM).
Also on the 454, the factory carb is the Rochester Quadrajet. The fuel filter is INSIDE the carb where the fuel inlet is. No doubt there is at least one other filter along the supply line.
Best of luck with your HR and enjoy!

RE: 460 exhaust manifolds

When you are pulling hard the stock 460 manifolds flow about as good as a potato in the tailpipe which builds massive heat and warpage. NO gaskets is a better solution. Best solution is headers and a thin bead of high-temp RTV. Again NO gaskets.
This is based on personal experience not opinion.

Pretty tough to beat the "Bad Boy" mini air horn for the money. Harbor Freight carries them for $35 on sale. Guaranteed to make "Soccer Mom" drop her cell phone.

Try www.rockauto.com. They usually carry Motorcraft replacement parts but much cheaper than the dealer.
Best of luck.

RE: 1995 Kountry Star

Hi Steve,
It would definitely help if we knew which chassis. The Newmar coach is definitely better than average but on an old coach like that, previous maintenance is everything.
Both the Chevy and Ford chassis of that era had issues but there are still lots of them on the road doing fine. Ford didn't do ABS until '99.

Congrats on the "new" motorhome.
I didn't realize that '96 was vintage. I always thought my '95 Coachmen was just plain old. :B
