RE: Traveling to Nova Scotia

We were there in the summer of 2007 for a month and a half. We stayed in N.B. and rode over to PEI. Oak Bay Campground, Oak Bay, New Brunswick. Good for big rigs. Ocean Surf Travel Park, Oak Bay, New Brunswick Mostly seasonals but lots of friendly people. Quiet. Had a big pull thru. Nova Scotia We stayed at Baddect Cabot Trail Campground near Baddeck, NS. Pull thrus aren't made for big rigs and branches needed to be cut back big time. We were in a back in and it was easy in easy out with our little blue truck and 35 ft 5th wheel trailer. Annapolis River Campground Bridgetown, NS. Pull thrus are 30 AMP only back ins 30/50 amp. Super nice place. Liked it there. Wayside-Supercity Camping Park Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia. Pull thrus are to small for big rigs. Ask for a back in. Nice and quiet, but the water pressure was low. Elm River RV Park, Glenholme, Nova Scotia Nice place except for low water pressure. BIG pull thrus. Made for big rigs. RV owner was very helpful on what ever we needed. Other campgrounds check out www.rvparkreviews.com

RE: Thermostat

Also we have the heat pump on the roof so the 'stock' thermostat has the logic in it to automatically turn on the gas furnace when the outside temp differential is to low to run the heat pump. It shuts down the heat pump and the gas heater then runs. Do any of these after-market thermostats have this capability? Bumping this up.

RE: Fulltiming and giftgiving

Nothing. About seven years ago. My Dad said he didn't want anything for Christmas. Just having us there or calling him was a gift of it's own. The rest of us quit giving to each other then. We were all adults including the one sister's kids. My wife gives nothing either. Hasn't for years. To many in her family with parents and 5 siblings and then their kids and their kid's kids. She says when she goes to visit herparents twice a year that is her gift to her parents and to her siblings and their kids and their kds to come see her. And it's their gift to her when they do.

RE: Traveling to Nova Scotia

Lou, Have a friend who has several handguns. He told me he put them all into a storage locker on the USA side before going into Canada. Said if they search your vehicles and find them they will take them and your going to be in big trouble. He didn't think it was worth the hassle. Also found this on-line of some guy that has handguns. "CROSSING THE BORDER ENTERING CANADA WITH FIREARMS This point is so important that it bears stressing first: DO NOT EVEN THINK OF ATTEMPTING TO CROSS THE BORDER INTO CANADA WITH A PROHIBITED FIREARM. There is no way that you can legally enter Canada with a prohibited firearm. This likely includes your concealed carry pistol. Canadian Customs will be looking for it. Leave it at home. You can't enter Canada with a restricted firearm unless you have an Authorization to Transport. If you have a handgun that is not prohibited, then it is restricted; if you don't have an Authorization to Transport (which you need to obtain well in advance) you can't bring it in. Leave it at home. Even if you have an Authorization to Transport for a restricted firearm, you can't carry it unless you also have an Authorization to Carry which is almost impossible to get. In general, forget about carrying a sidearm while in Canada. Make certain that you are in complete compliance with the transport regulations. Canadian Customs may try to bait you, e.g. by asking you to agree that this all is a good thing. Don't rise to it. Canada is not our country; we have nothing to say about their laws. Remember that you're being subject to the "attitude test." You definitely will be pulled aside for inspection when you show up at the border with handguns, and probably will be pulled aside even if you only have long guns. You'll probably also be subject to a vehicle search. It won't be a big deal unless you fail the attitude test or try to pull a fast one. They've never gone as far as taking my vehicle apart, but I once cooled my heels for the better part of an hour and on two other occasions was held up for over a half hour. I wasn't worried, as I had made a complete declaration and I knew that their search would show so. The way I look at it: I expect to be delayed and my stuff thoroughly rummaged, and I am pleasantly surprised when it doesn't happen. Actually, it can be fun if you're a PAL holder. Canadian Customs is disappointed that they don't get to collect the fee from you. US Customs is disappointed that they don't get ahold of a Non-Resident Firearms Declaration. Either way, they are surprised. It's particularly entertaining when the Canadian Customs agent is one of the summer kids. Fortunately, they'll quickly call over a full-timer who knows what to do. If you don't have a PAL and registration certificate, you'll have to fill out the Non-Resident Firearms Declaration form and pay the fee. If you have restricted firearms, they'll check your ATT, and will also inspect your handguns to make sure that you have them in a locked box with a trigger lock. Assuming that all your paperwork is in order (especially the ATT if you have handguns), you are in compliance with the transport regulations, and you don't rise to being baited, you'll be passed through the border without excessive difficulty. You probably will be delayed, especially if you have handguns. I've never been delayed more than an hour. Plan for it. Patience and a sense of humor helps. It is not necessary to comply with the more complex storage regulations if you are in compliance with the transport regulations and the firearms stays in the vehicle at all times. On the other hand, Canadian Customs seems to be happier if you go the extra mile (extra kilometer?) and comply with the storage regulations too even if you're just transporting; in other words, consider putting a trigger lock on the long guns too. Remember what I said about the attitude test. Sometimes, Customs agents get a bit sour after having one dingbat after another try to pull something on them. Set an example as a fine, upstanding, law-abiding gunowner who strictly follows all laws and regulations. You just might make things easier for the next guy."

RE: Traveling to Nova Scotia

The wife and I spent a month in Nova Scotia in the summer of 2007, also a couple days in PEI. Be sure to leave your handguns at home. What Hessy says. Ride the Cabot Trail. Lots to see and do there, just depends on what you like.

Thermostat

Our RVComfort.HP Coleman Mach Thermostat has a problem. The switch for the A/C, Off, gas heat, elec. heat is screwed up on the off part. When switching to off, the A/C runs. Everything else works fine. Figure it's new thermostat time. But since the switch has always been a little off, wondering about if we could replace it with something different that would be more correct. The complaint being if the switch is in the off position it sets between off and gas heat. So has anyone changed their thermostat with something different and if so what did you use?

RE: Buying an RV site???

I'm not sure I'd buy a RV lot. We are near Casa Grande, AZ. RV lots are for sale for $40,000 to $60,000. A really nice home with a three car garage just sold across the street for $41,000. I have a picture of it on my webshot page below my sig.

RE: Fulltiming and State Farm auto insurance

You need to tell your insurance company you are a full-time RVer. Also unless they changed since 2004, State Farm dosn't cover full-time RVers. There was a thread on this forum about a gal's sister whos RV was in an accident. The insurance company wasn't going to cover them since they were full-timers and the policy said they just used the RV for rec. use.

RE: Sleep numbe bed

Where do you look to find the mold? Our motorhome is a 2005 model. My DH side of the bed was losing air so we have a new air pump ordered. Thank you, Shirley Unzip the cover and check it, look inside at the bladders, around them and under them. We did. No mold.

RE: Two Way Handsets for Backing

The wife uses hand signals. Say I react faster to them over a radio. Last week I was talking with several guys were talking about their wives using radios, hand signals, cell phones. One guy said he got out and looked around then had his wife stand where she wanted the driver's side rear end of the RV to be. Then he backed in. As soon as he knocked her over he knew he was where he had to be. :B

RE: Help needed finding big rig campgrounds for 5th wheels.

We are 60 ft long also. Ask for pull thrus. Although some places their pull thrus are shorter and/or skinner then they advertise. Plus the interior roads aren't made for big rigs. But so far no major problems. The wife uses google earth, Trailer Directory, Passport America and rvparksreviews.com She is an excellent navagator.

RE: Arizona Rentals

There are lots of park models for rent. But they aren't cheap. $700. to $1,100 a month depending on the model and park it's in. As for parking your trailer in storage, a lot of campgrounds/RV resorts have storage lots. Most of the time have seen prices being a dollar or two per day.

RE: Stupidity Club

Your not alone on dropping the trailer on the rails. Seems like a lot of people with pickup trucks do that. We have never had a problem. But then we have a trailer saver hitch. Once the jaws clamp around the kingpin and the handle goes into the lock position we are hitched up. Really don't even have to do a pull test with the hitch we have.

RE: HELP! Insurance claim may be denied

I just talked to my sis..I guess she contacted her agent in August to tell them she would be living in it, so this will definitely be an issue with the agency. Thanks for keeping us updated on this. Hope to hear a good out come.

RE: Help me decide on a car

Wife and I rented a car when we flew back to Iowa to see family and friends, we sat in the Charger and hated it. But since you like it can't help you there. Sat in a Toyota Camry. Very impressed. Took it and was even more impressed. Averaged 32 mpg. My Dad has a Chevy Impala. I've drove it. Nice, but the Toyota Camry was still better. We have a Toyota Matrix, but it's a 1.8 liter 4 banger and if you want a V-6 you can get one, but our little 4 banger is very preppy and it's averaging 35 mpg. The only complaint is it needs a little more insulation. On rough roads we get road noise in the interior.
