RE: Axles

Our CF335SS has axles rated at 5200 lbs each. 16 inch aluminum wheels (16X6J) with 6 bolts. Weight leaving the factory was 10,014 lbs "dry".
Last CAT scale Trailer Axle weight was - 9220 lbs
As soon I took delivery and got it home I checked all of the suspension bolts (many were not tightened to the correct torque spec) and found a data sheet taped to the axles - had the serial number, date/time of manufacture, weight rating and a parts listing.

RE: Am I missing something?

What I found on the internet:
The Atwood water heater has an aluminum tank and if you put an anode into it the warranty will be voided and the tank will very quickly fail. The anode is used in the Suburban with a steel tank, only. To aid in preventing this, the Suburban has a 1" drain plug and the Atwood has a 3/4" drain. There are after-market anodes that can be put into an Atwood, but you will destroy the tank if you do so.
****
I had installed a brass plug with a drain valve in my Atwood hot water heater last year. After reading the info I took the drain valve out and re-installed the plastic drain plug. Used teflon tape on the drain plug to make it easier to get it out for tank flushing/draining.

Tires are rated at 3525 lbs at 80 lbs.
Steer Axle - 4900 lbs
Drive Axle - 6060 lbs
Trailer Axle - 9220 lbs
Gross Weight - 20,180 lbs

RE: 5th Wheel Hitches

I have used a Husky 16K hitch since 2003. When I purchased my 2011 Chevy I installed the Reese Custom Base and Rail Kit - only drilling required is in the bed of the truck.
http://www.etrailer.com/Fifth-Wheel/Chevrolet/Silverado/2011/RP50066-58.html?vehicleid=2011303929
Buy the RV locally if you can - less distance to travel for warranty work. Find the layout that you like and hope for the best on the Manufacturer quality control.
CrossRoads is owned by Thor as well as allot of other RVs.
http://www.thorindustries.com/corp/recreational-vehicles
I have a CrossRoads fifth wheel - the first year it spent about 4 1/2 months at the RV dealer for warranty work. The bed slide required a major modification - wrong design of the bed slide support with the SCHWINTEK IN-WALL SLIDE System and improper sealing when built. The dealer took forever to perform the modification and they messed it up so it spent another month at the dealer. Bed slide is working good now and no leaks.
As far as CrossRoad trailers - look at the postings on:

What year is your Truck?
We used a CAT scale to weigh the truck/trailer this spring:
Steer Axle - 4900 lbs
Drive Axle - 6060 lbs
Trailer Axle - 9220 lbs
Gross Weight - 20,180 lbs
Our 2011 has a GVWR of 11,600 lbs. Axle ratings - 5600 lbs front and 7050 lbs rear. Truck weight is about 7900 lbs - local transfer station scale
Our CF335SS has axles rated at 5200 lbs each.
Weight leaving the factory was 10,014 lbs "dry".

RE: synthetic trans fluid

Transynd for me - purchase at the local Detroit/Allison diesel shop. Drain and fill twice for a full conversion to synthetic.

RE: Diesel Fuel

I have run bio-diesel in my 2011 - purchased the fuel in the mid-west last year - no issues. The 2011's can run on B20. I think previous models were limited to B5. All of the D2 at the pumps should be the ultra low sulfur diesel - if it is off-road diesel it should be marked as such.
I run Standyne additive in my diesel. Was the only brand approved by GM back in 2005.
You will find allot of good duramax info at:
www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php
www.duramaxforum.com/forum/
You will find good info about the Allison transmission on the sites too.
Would be good to read the diesel supplement owners manual.

RE: 2006 Chevy Duramax/Allison Question?

If you find a 2006 or 2007 it would be a good purchase as noted above.
Traded my 2005 for a 2011 because of the increased GVWR, exhaust brake, more HP/Torque, integrated brake controller and 6 speed Allison. Have a little over 21,000 miles on it without any issues.

Check the trailer suspension nuts too - I found most of them "loose" on our unit.

RE: Pin box or airbags?

Put air bags on the truck - air them up to 45 psi towing and lower to 8 psi when not towing. I carry a pancake style air compressor in the trailer. Have a Rota-Flex 5th Wheel Pin Box with Rubber Bushings on our fifth wheel - it came on the unit. I am sure the rubber bushing helps some.

RE: 5W vs Class A MH

Take you time with the purchase - go to some RV shows to see what is on the market. If you do not have a trade you can make some good deals. Also, there may be some good used deals - those that did retire and determined that full timing in a RV was not for them.
Check into vehicle registration and drivers license requirements in you state. In NY when the combined GVWR of the truck and trailer exceeds 26,000 lbs (or motor home)a class R license is required - an additional drivers test like a trucker and specific license for the additional weight ratings
In 2003 we went back to a fifth wheel after owning a motor home for 13 years. We wanted more room and I wanted a diesel. So a fifth wheel and a truck with a diesel met our needs/wants. We find that we enjoy the fifth wheel allot more. A fifth wheel tows great behind our truck,
We get 10.5 to 11.5 mpg with a diesel truck towing. Fuel costs more but for me the pulling power and mileage was the thing that leaned me to purchase a diesel truck.
If you decide on a fifth wheel - purchase the fifth wheel then the tow vehicle. The pin weight of the fifth wheel will determine how much truck you need to purchase. A 40 foot fifth wheel will probably require a dually F350/3500HD.
When we owned a motor home we always towed a vehicle behind us - sometimes with a tow dolly and some with a flat tow. Most states now require some kind of braking feature for the vehicle in tow. Our class A with a gas engine got 6-8 mpg depending upon speed and head wind.

Sign me up - look like it will get great fuel mileage. I think I will order the model with dual wheels and 4X4.

Every truck I have owned - 500 mile break in before towing. Change the rear end fluid after 600 to 1000 miles of towing.

RE: Cat Scale weight

Never thought about individual trailer axle weighing. My truck is about 8050 lbs with me in it and 3/4 tank of fuel (I think that was with the hitch in the truck). Checked the weight at the local transfer station - they weigh you before and after you dump stuff.

Cat Scale weight

Headed out for our first spring camping trip and while I was fueling up at a truck stop I checked the weight on a CAT scale ($10.00 for the use of the scale)
Steer Axle - 4900 lbs
Drive Axle - 6060 lbs
Trailer Axle - 9220 lbs
Cross Weight - 20,180 lbs
2 passengers in the truck, full tank of diesel (36 gallons) and 1 small dog. Trailer is packed for camping and about 1/3 tank of water. Propane tanks full, dual 12V batteries and the compartments loaded with "camping stuff".
We upgraded to a newer 3500 HD back in 2011. It has a GVWR of 11,600 lbs. Axle ratings - 5600 lbs front and 7050 lbs rear. Having a diesel adds wight to the truck. I have air bags on the truck so I think that would shift some of the weight to the front axle.
Our CF330ss has axles rated at 5200 lbs each. Weight leaving the factory was 10,014 lbs "dry". That leaves the load rating of about 2300 lbs.
