RE: If you were a Snowbird, where would you stay?

Thanks everyone! The advice is pretty evenly split between FLA and AZ.
I'm thinking it may be Yuma for my first year. I know some people who winter there and they rave about it. It'll be nice to have some friendly faces nearby. I've looked at El Centro, CA as well - looks like a nice place.

RE: If you were a Snowbird, where would you stay?

Hey there stranger!
I missed seeing you when we shot through SD last summer. My brother wasn't doing so well in the high altitude, so we just drove by Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse and headed for the badlands. The lower down we got, the easier his breathing was, so we didn't linger.
I'll be in central Canada for 4 months - love the summers in Ontario and then I'll be heading south. You just never know where I'll end up :-)

RE: If you were a Snowbird, where would you stay?

Congratulations on retiring Nui. Also, good to see you on the forum again. I wondered where you went :)
Thanks - I parked the Beast in October and went back to work (ugh!) but now I'll be full-timing and can't wait. I love this forum - people have been tremendously helpful with a nervous newbie like me.

I broke my Beast's butt

I backed into a tree (not deliberately) that was hiding a large steel post (and who the heck hides steel posts behind trees anyhow!?:M)
My back bumper is split from top to bottom - an almost surgical looking break.
Is there something out there that will glue/repair plastic - or whatever that stuff is that makes up the bumper. It's duct taped right now.

RE: If you were a Snowbird, where would you stay?

I like Hawaii too but my poor old Chieftain wouldn't float that far :B
I'm surprised you don't see RVs in Hawaii. It seems that would be a natural fit. Wouldn't it be great to wake up beside the ocean on a hot, sunny Hawaiian morning. Ahhhhhhh.......

If you were a Snowbird, where would you stay?

I'm retiring in exactly 28 days and will be planning to spend the winter somewhere in the Southern USA. I LOATHE snow and hate being cold. I don't consider the temp to be warm until it hits 75. 90 is comfortable.
What is your favorite place to hibernate during winter months?

RE: New with Toad

I drove my MH for the first time last year and decided, what the heck, may as well pull a TOAD too. I didn't even feel it behind the rig and, in fact, it kept me centered on the road. A quick look at the back-up camera told me if I was pulling left or right.
You cannot back up if you're towing 4 on the ground (tried it - wouldn't recommend it). Otherwise it is easy to hook up and a great convenience once you arrive somewhere.

RE: I am new...what did I do

I'm relatively new too - just got my rig last summer and decided to tow with 4 on the ground, since I didn't want the hassle of a dolly. I was terrified!!! But it turned out to be the best thing I could have done.
With the back-up camera on, you can see instantly if you are centered on the road. (I tend to pull to the right). If your car is centered, then so are you.
You don't even feel the TOAD behind you. All you have to remember is to give yourself a bit more time to turn corners.
The convenience of having a car at the end of the road is great.
If I were you, I'd buy an old (but reliable) "beater" that you can tow and forget about.

RE: Cost of tires in USA

I don't care if they're made in Zimbabwe, as long as they stay round when I'm driving.
I had a blow-out last year in one of the rear tires. Not fun!

Cost of tires in USA

I've been told that I need to replace 4 tires on the Beast. They are 245/70/19.5's
In Canada, the average cost is about $480/tire. I did find some that were $280 were but they made "offshore" and who knows if they're actually made of rubber.... or even if they're round.
On average, what do you pay for a good RV tire in the USA (say Arizona). My mechanic is heading that way and has offered to look around.
Thanks!

What should I ask Santa for?

I have all the usual stuff in the Beast. Now that I'm about to go full-time, what sort of things should I put on my wish list (in an ideal, "I believe in Santa" way)

RE: RV TV - service in Vancouver area?

I have a satellite dish in the RV (Winegard) but am not subscribed to any service at present. The previous owners were using DirectTV I believe. I have to figure out who offers the service in Canada and the US. I don't have satellite at home - just Telus Optik.
If buying a new TV is the best option, I'm certainly willing. The problem is that the TV "holder" in the RV might not allow it and I have limited space to put a TV anywhere else.
I'll send you a private message with my phone number. Maybe we can hook up one weekend.

RE: RV TV - service in Vancouver area?

Lol Katoomer.... can you repeat that in English :B
The MH is a 1998 Chieftain (maybe '99 - opinions differ), and I'm assuming the TV must be original. It's stored in Chilliwack right now, just a ways past O'Connor RV.
If you would like to go out for a drive one Saturday or Sunday, I sure would appreciate it!

RE: RV TV - service in Vancouver area?

I need to get the whole TV cabling thing looked at - nothing I do works.
Then I want to get a satellite receiver.
I just need to find someplace in or near Vancouver that will do the work. I've called a couple of RV repair places but they tell me they don't work on TVs. TV places tell me they don't work on RVs. I'm stuck in the middle.

RV TV - service in Vancouver area?

Has anyone here signed up for satellite TV in the Vancouver, BC area?
I need to re-configure my TVs so that I can get cable, satellite and antenna reception. Right now, I'm not getting anything. I need a TV repair place that works on RVs. Any advice?
Thanks.

RE: Mice

I used old pantyhose, fill them with mothballs and hang them in strategic locations outside my trailer. I also used bounce sheets inside. It worked for a couple of years, although last year the mice got in.
So far, no mice in the MH, although they did chew threw my heat gauge in the engine compartment. I'll be doing the mothball thing this year.

RE: leaking toilet

Or you can do like I did.... pay $480 to have someone do the work and then find out a month later that the toilet still leaks.

Committed or Committable?

It's not even noon yet and I've taken 2 big steps: I have handed in my official retirement notice and I've sold my TT and have decided to just keep the RV (it was a toss-up for awhile-I really loved that trailer).
So now, I need to get the brakes done on the Beast. There was a very strong burning smell when I was coming down the mountains, so I figure I'm in for a full brake job. Any idea how much that's going to cost in a 34 ft. MH?
