RE: Proper Chocking for Safety?

I work in the nuclear industry and we do everything by written procedures. I carry that habit to camper activities. I have a written procedure that I go through line by line, read a step do a step. Drives my bride crazy, but no mishaps. If you come across an 'event' not covered guess you are stuck until 'procedural writers' review and write new ones :B (Old 'steamer'......power plant 'fly by the seat' control operator for 30 yrs.) Way off topic, but I worked in the petrochem industry long enough to see the transition from no automation to fully computerized. The old boys could judge a still's temperature by how long their spit sizzled on it. Full automation made the plants run a lot better but when the computer went down, nobody could remember what to do.

RE: HELP! Ramp too high

In addition the front brake held the front wheel with almost no skidding. If you want no skidding AT ALL, don't use the front brake. Start the bike and use the clutch to brake. NO SKIDDING. Why not use both brakes? Front and rear? I'd rather wear out my brake pads than my clutch. I usually have the motor running and use a bit of clutch when the front starts to slide. (Sometimes I don't bother, depends on my mood.) I reserve both feet for keeping the bike up, don't feel comfortable dabbing my way down backwards. It would be a lot easier with my sport bike instead of the 800 lb Road King, but it's in storage right now.

RE: GPS with overhead clearances ?

I bought a Cobra unit at CW about 15 months ago. I believe it's been discontinued as I saw a single unit on the discount table for about 1/3 of what I paid last time I was there. The Cobra continues to work well for us. It's purely a trucker's unit. In addition to height, you input your length for cab & trailer and distance to pin and of course overall weight. It keeps us off those roads that look okay on the map but then you find the 10mph hairpin. Anyway, I'm sure the new units at CW and other stores (major truckstop maybe?) will work great.

RE: HELP! Ramp too high

No problems going in but on some terrain I lose the ability to touch my feet down while backing off the ramp. Usually I'm looking around for some type of rise in the ground to help me out. I am 5'8" and load a Valkyrie Interstate in our Raptor 300. To avoid the "no touch zone" I remove the seat from the Valk before going up or down the ramp. (It makes it easier to get the front wheel out of the chock too.):) I tried Lamopar's suggestion to raise the front of the trailer and it really helped. I'm also 5'8" and was able to touch at least my toes on the entire back-out. In addition the front brake held the front wheel with almost no skidding. Removing the seat's another good idea. I do struggle to get out of the chock. I'll have to start doing this as well. Thanks!

RE: F350 Questions

Mine is a 2011 duallie. The 3.73 ratio works good for me towing an 18k toy hauler. Best mileage I've gotten is 9.9 on the flat with no head wind, doing about 62mph. I had to use the 4x4 twice. Both times it was a fairly normal campground i.e. not boondocking. A berm of fresh gravel would have gotten me on both occasions. I didn't want 4x4 but wanted to buy a truck off the lot. None of the dealers in my area were stocking 2wd's. It's probably for the best because we do get up into Canada from time to time and it should be pretty helpful in the snow. By the way, the truck has been flawless apart from a broken windshield washer fitting. It's got 39k on it with about half of this towing my heavy load.

RE: TV and Internet when Boondocking

I have an AT&T MiFi. It runs about $40 per month for their smallest data plan which is good enough for bills & e-mail. Of course, the AT&T coverage is the weak link, especially in the west. I'm thinking to move to Verizon when this contract is up. In addition to the coverage limits, the battery life is pathetic. I need 120v to use it.

RE: Garage conversion to workshop / art studio??

I think your idea is great. Like CM says, you'll need a strong truck. A large toy hauler without significant toys in the back will have a very high pin weight. I have a 1 ton duallie and am very close to my limit even with an 800 lb motorcycle in the garage. However, your kiln & other supplies won't exactly be light. Our garage mods wouldn't interest you. We added a couple of IKEA dressers and a roll-out rug. I'm sure I've seen earlier posts that included a built-in desk and a swing-up work surface, a lot more like what you're interested in. Maybe some will chime in with fresh photos.

RE: Need transfer switch ASAP.

In future, you might try calling Heartland. Their service adviser has helped me out with quick shipping parts and/or advising best sources. I asked where to buy a replacement clip for the sliding mirror door since the warranty was done. They shipped several to me at no charge. Ditto on a drawer latch.

RE: Colorado Springs Fire

Hey Mav, I hope none of your friends or family suffered any losses; good that you're in the clear. It's a real shame for those who lost their homes. When we lived down on the TX coast there were always issues with insurance coverage after a major storm, i.e. some did not carry flood insurance. I would like to think that a loss due to a forest fire is unconditionally covered. We're scheduled to spend 1 nite in CS a bit later in August while traveling from Estes Park to Durango. I read where the cog railway has started up again. Hopefully things will be getting back to normal very soon. We're in Deadwood SD right now, won't be over to Estes Park until later in July. We always try to spend some time every summer in Colorado and hated to see the fires.

RE: My New Toy Hauler!!! 34' Eclipse Attitude

I can't help with your issue, but suggest you open a new post asking for help this morning. Some folks may not check into this one.

RE: F-Series Ford trucks targeted by thieves

I had these installed on my 2011. How do they work? I guess some day I might see some scratch & dent marks from a failed attempt. So far, nothing but the truck seems to stay where I leave it.

RE: HELP! Ramp too high

Hey Lamopar, what a great idea! Raise the front of the trailer. That's just too obvious. I load a Road King. No problems going in but on some terrain I lose the ability to touch my feet down while backing off the ramp. Usually I'm looking around for some type of rise in the ground to help me out. I can't wait for my next load/unload opportunity to give this a try.

RE: Do you use your generator?

We've used ours about 4 times in a year. It adds a lot to the pin weight and takes up a lot of space..... but I'm glad we have it. Each of those 4 times would have been a big problem without a generator.

Hey JKRussow, did I see your trailer in Gillette, Wyoming?

RE: 2nd A/C

Our bedroom a/c is not ducted, but it makes a huge contribution to cooling the whole rig down. We just open the bedroom & bathroom doors and run them both if we need to cool quickly.

RE: Travel Advise

Durango area can be pretty full when it comes to RV parks. I'd recommend booking now if your plans are solid enough. I haven't stayed at Alpen Rose but went by it last year & it looked nice. It was solidly booked. Back in April I booked some time there for this August.

RE: 16k vs 20k hitch question

My trailer is 18k GVWR. When I bought my new truck the dealer offered a 25k hitch for an extra $100 so I took it. Costs me some payload as mentioned above, but I won't have to upgrade it for anything in future & have big time overkill on safety factor. By the way, some folks in other posts have advised you'll never get near your trailer's GVWR. We full time & recently weighed the trailer and found we're slightly over at 18,275#. This is a toy hauler with a touring HD in the back. When we drop off the grandkids and their stuff we'll be closer to our limit.

RE: Help! getting rid of ants

We use Comet cleanser sprinkled around tires, jacks, hoses & power cable to discourage them entering if we find a problem with a site. Only good until it rains of course. The Amdro baits have also worked well for us.

RE: Woot Woot. Propane $1.70/Gallon!!!!

$21.45 for 7.1 gallons at Rapid City Flying J yesterday. A bit over $3 but that's still about $9 cheaper than I've paid over the last 12 months while visiting 25 states or so.
