RE: Where to buy tires for F-350

What many often overlook is the "installed price". Sometimes tire shops will run you over the coals pretty good for mounting, balancing, and road hazard. Costco and Sam's Club are pretty hard to beat in that area. If you know you're going to buy them there I'd check stock before you start your trip because they don't always have all sizes. Sometimes Firestone has some good sales and I've bought from Discount Tires before. Not all Discount Tire stores are created equal and I had a very bad experience with one of them that refused to honor their own warranty and then flat out lied to me about the availability of a replacement tire saying they were "discontinued and unavailable" but would be happy to upsell me. I went 3 miles down the road to another Discount Tire and got the problem solved. The manager told me that the other store was notorius for their questionable tactics.

RE: Motor Trend says ....

WTF! They are comparing numbers generated with the F150 towing 1000 lb more:S
I guess they had to protect the 395HP Hemi from a little V6:B
Whether true or not I read somewhere (back when I owned a 2011 Ecoboost) that in the Ford Mike Rowe vids that Ford used a 3.73 Eco vs a Ram 3.55 in the hill climb and vice versa in the economy comparisons. If you remember the Ram was pretty darn close to the Ford at the end of the climb.
The F150 does have a ton of low end torque and I liked the way it towed. Fuel mileage dropped off quite a bit in the time I had mine. It only bested my Ram by 1 MPG in all three, towing, city, highway.
I had a number of chronic problems with my Ecoboost and after a year of ownership I threw in the towel and dumped it. Out of the last 5 months I owned it, it was in the shop 5 weeks. Ford customer service basically told me to pound sand. My truck had the tranny leak common to 2nd quarter 2011 builds, had the steering rack replaced, chronic alignment problems that they couldn't seem to work out that forced me to replace all 4 tires after only 13K miles due to abnormal, uneven wear, and the shudder/miss problem that last I heard still has the Ford engineers scratching their heads. Here's 215 pages of reading for you on that subject http://www.f150forum.com/f38/2011-55-60mph-5-0-shuddering-ecoboost-engine-miss-loss-power-possible-fixes-128636/
That was the final straw for me. If yours doesn't have the problem then good for you and count your lucky stars. All Ecoboosts aren't bad and maybe you got a good one. But those that ended up with a bad one are hating life and unless it's come out very recently there is no fix.
The only regret that I have going from a F150 to the Ram is that I didn't buy the Ram in the first place .. I'd have been several $K ahead.

RE: Motor Trend says ....

Have not experienced the dreaded water in turbo yet?????
You need to go to Ford and get the 'HydroJet' ECM flash.:B
I had a 2011 Ecoboost with the shudder/miss problem. When it became painfully clear that Ford had no clue how to fix it I dumped it. It was indeed a tow beast though. I do miss that low RPM torque. My fuel economy was not all that great. When I went to the Ram I only gave up about 1 mpg on both ends.

RE: My New Toy Hauler

Interesting. Why do you chose to use a portable gen instead of your onboard generator?
Mainly because it's quieter and uses much less fuel than an onboard. My buddy is always asking if he can plug in "just to power the lights" because his gen goes through quite a bit of gas on our week long trips.
I installed an auto transfer switch so I can use either gen without plugging/unplugging. It's nice to get up in the morning and hit the switch and make coffee but after that I don't want to hear the noise. The Honda is much quieter and is usually running in eco mode.

RE: My New Toy Hauler

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forum wanted to officially say "Hi". I've been renting for a while but finally bought a shiny new Eclipse Attitude FGG23.
It came down to either the Eclipse or a Shockwave. The Shockwave was a little more expensive but came with an onboard generator. The Eclipse came with a portable generator but has the Fiberglass sides. In the end, I chose looks over convenience...LOL.
Took it out this weekend and so far so good. Portable generator is a pain though, but I think I'll get used to it.
Congrats on the new TH!.
When I was TH shopping an onboard gen was a "must have". After owning my TH for 5 years I've found I use my portable Honda about 95% of the time. The only time I use the onboard is in the morning when I get up and make coffee. If I had it to do over again and could save $2-$3K I'd go portable (I don't camp where I need to run A/C)

RE: Carson Fun Runner

I have a 2006 22' Carson Titan and it's been great for me. I've dealt with their parts dept a couple of times and they've been great. Like others said, alot of stuff in RVs are generic and Carson really hasn't changed much over the years, so things seem to be available.
Check and see if it has 7K GVW or 10K. I think they come standard with 7K GVW. My trailer weighs 6350 empty so I upgraded the suspension. The Carsons are pretty plain but I have mine dressed up pretty nice inside. If yours is a front bath model you'll appreciate the roominess and the large shower.

RE: We Own Work - F150

Before you buy an Ecoboost you may want to do a little reading here

RE: New Ford F 150 with 5 liter V8

I was getting ready to mention the Ecoboost is a problem drivetrain. They constantly post horror stories on the Ford forum. What Ford forum are you referring to??
Go here http://www.f150forum.com/f38/
You will find stickys there. The shudder/miss problem is 170 pages long and should keep you entertained for a couple of evenings. The steering problem sticky is 73 pages long. It is not all sunshine and rainbows in the Ford world.
My 2011 F150 FX4 screw Ecoboost was fine for the first 6 months I owned it. Then the wheels fell off the wagon. First I had the tranny leak that was common to trucks built the 2nd quarter of 2011. Some failed on the dealer's lot so I guess I was lucky I got 6 months out of mine. Then the front end was out of specs from the factory causing abnormal tire wear. Then I had the steering rack replaced per TSB because it was sticking .. much fun. Then I had the shudder/miss problem that Ford STILL has not figured out. Had a TSB performed for that still had the shudder/miss plus the update gave me turbos blowing off as a bonus. Took it back a couple of time for that and Ford's answer to the dealer's inquiries was "drive another one and if it does it then it's normal" .. Service advisor just shook his head over that one. Tires were still wearing abnormal so had it aligned yet again as well as replaced the tires at 13,600 miles due to the wear. Fun times huh? All the while Ford's customer service manager Mark Johnson was avoiding my phone calls and would not return voice mails or emails. Finally managed to corner him to ask for some relief and he in essence told me to pound sand. Very thrilled I bought a $43,000 truck from Ford at this time. Was sick to death of the truck and the way I was treated, didn't care to drag it out any further with the lemon law, so offed the truck and took the hit. I've been a Ford guy my whole life and owned a bunch of them, but that was my last Ford .. ever!
I'm not saying all F150s are bad, but mine was not a joy to own. 5 weeks in 5 months my truck was in the shop .. and still wasn't fixed. Enterprise rental car loved me. They knew my name and would say "oh no is your truck in the shop again?" when I walked in the door. If you did an OASIS report on my truck you'd get a document as long as your arm.
edit *** forgot to mention that fuel mileage dropped off 10% which was mild compared to some.

RE: New Ford F 150 with 5 liter V8

I had (key word "had")an Ecoboost. It was a tow beast no doubt. It was also in the shop 5 weeks out of the last 5 months I owned it with numerous problems and one problem Ford STILL has not figured out that affects a small number of Ecoboosts. Go to the F150 forum and there is a sticky there with around 170 pages on the shudder/miss problem. Also gas mileage tends to drop off on some of the Ecos and mine was one of them. Some owners have reported 13mpg hwy.
If you want a Ford, go with the 5.0. I have a friend with one and he's happy with how it tows and he's getting better gas mileage than I did with my Ecoboost. After it's all said and done I wish I'd gone with the 5.0. I lost a few thousand on the truck but am now driving a Dodge instead of an Enterprise rental car ;-)
