RE: Tires

I recently replaced my 8 year old Chinese tires with Samson truck tires. The ride is smoothe and my gas mileage also increased by 1 mile per gallon, from 7.5 to 8.9, at a speed of around 60 mph. I paid $2,000 for six 245/70R19.5 tires mounted and balanced.

RE: MH wreck on I95 yesterday

I think that the accident that you are referring to involved a tour bus carrying students from a school trip to Florida that crashed into some trees on I-95 near Walterboro, SC. The bus driver died in the accident and according to the news report, miraculously, none of the students on board were seriously hurt. No mention as to what caused the accident except that it was a single vehicle accident. http://www.live5news.com/story/22480399/trooper-1killed-after-coach-bus-crash-in-colleton-county

RE: Newbie thinking

Glad I did! Just wish I had more time to enjoy it. Gas mileage is not as good as a car or truck but the first time you do a restover at a truck stop or WalMart, you will appreciate the convenience of not having to get out of your motorhome in order to get some sleep and a little food.

RE: Front Wheel Won't Spin

Bang on the outside of the brake drum with a hammer. This sometimes loosens the springs enough to remove the brake drum on cars.

RE: The case for buying Chinese tires on an old motorhome

I am just curious, I hear about Chinese tire bombs all the time, but all my readings on this forum and others have been about Goodyear and Michelin tire failures. Since I have 8 year old Chinese made tires that are in excellent shape and has not caused any trouble, am I missing something. I will be replacing them this spring only because of the 5 to 10 year peace of mind rule, but the tires look good with no cracking or checking. I remember back when Firestone and Goodyear tires were causing failures on cars and trucks and those were American made tires. I think a lot has to do with quality control at the plant and the profit margin that the tire company expects from its products and not just the location of the tire company.

RE: Potential Newbie - questions on Finance & Insurance

Engrdad, You don't have to drive a motorhome long distances often. Many of us here are not retired and still find time to move our motorhomes. Just take it out for a short ride once in awhile to keep mechanicals lubed and working. Sort of like taking the boat out for a day of fishing or water skiing. I assume that you do get a couple of days off per week. Once you get the hang of connecting and disconnecting your hookups, it gets easier and you won't mind taking the family out on a little sight seeing trip in your motorhome.

RE: repairing leaking roof air conditioner

A new gasket is around $25.00 at Camping World. Just remove the four screws that hold the a/c unit to the roof and lift the a/c unit up. The opening is only 14 inches wide.

RE: Engine stalling 2000 Winabago V 10

I would be willing to bet fuel filter. Usually when a fuel pump fails it won't start again without a little banging to release the contacts. I think that when the pressure in the fuel line relaxes, the trash in the fuel filter disperse enough to let fuel flow until it clogs again. Just a thought.

RE: Buying a class A!!!

I don't think too much could be wrong with an engine approximately 8 years old with 33,000 miles on it if the oil and filter were changed regularly. A clean tail pipe and a quiet running engine with no knocking are good indications of a good running engine with those low mile figures.

RE: Buying used

From my signature, you can guess my preference. We love the floor plan and the fact that there are just a few options available because most options are standard equipment for this model. The basement air is also a good feature with this unit because there are less protrusions through the fiberglass roof to cause leaks.

RE: Used Class A Coach Gas Engines

I had a 1984 Chevy 454 Class A with over 106,000 miles that did not use any oil. The only mechanical problems that I had were a new starter and an alternator.

RE: Ticking/clicking noise. What is it? Possiblities?

I also suspect that it is an exhaust manifold leak. Sounds like it could be an exhaust gasket leak. An exhaust leak that small shouldn't hurt the engine.

RE: Newbie questions - road clearances and such

Your other concern would be hazardous material restrictions because of your propane tank. Some tunels do not allow hazardous material and some look at motorhomes in that respect. I got stopped going into Baltimore once because I didn't know about the restriction. The cop stood in the middle of the roadway to stop me before entering the tunnel. After checking and making sure that my propane tank was shut off, he let me through.

RE: 460 versus V10

Like many have said, the V10 F53 Ford chassis has a wider track with 19.5 inch wheels which will assist with road handling. The spark plug issue from what I understand is a problem only if you use too much torque after changing spark plugs. New spark plugs should not be needed until around 100,000 miles. My Winnebago is 35.6 ft long and the V10 has plenty of power and also is very smooth.

RE: Norcold Refrigerator "No A/C"

I would try cooling with LP to begin with and then switch to ac. The fuse may not blow if you do this. My Norcold 8142 will blow the 5 amp fuse if I try to cool the fridge on ac first. I know that something is going bad but right now that seems to work and because it works fine on LP, I don't plan to mess with it anytime soon.

RE: mirror

If you have Velvac mirrors like mine, they are attached to the outside wall by 4 phillips head screws which are under screw caps on each corner. Just pop the caps off and you will see the phillips head screw. There should also be a hex screw on the outside near the base of the mirror housing where it meets the arm for adjusting the viewing angle of the mirror. I had the drivers side come loose this summer where my mirror housing was swinging forward and aft with the wind. The hex screw had come loose and caused the outside housing to swing around making it impossible to adjust the mirror with the mirror control inside the motorhome. http://www.winnebagoind.com/products/previous-models/

RE: Thorley headers and new exhaust vs Complete Banks Systems

The other benefit that the Banks system have over the Doug Thorley headers is that the Banks system is stainless steel which will last longer.

RE: Wet Storage Compartment - 99 Winnebago

Looking at the pictures, I would guess that the water is coming in from the compartment door's rubber seal. I am basing this on the fact that the wet spots in the compartment is near the front where the compartment door seal is located. If you tug on the rubber seal you may be able to see where it has worked itself loose from the body of the compartment. I had to seal a couple of mine this past summer.

RE: Defined benefit pension and loans

If you can buy now, do it. There is nothing wrong with traveling in a 5 year old unit. At least by then, all of the bugs will have been fixed. Not saying that components won't break, it is just that they break even on new units. Plus, 5 years of payments will have been made. A motorhome should last well over 20 years with proper maintenance.

RE: red pro max 3

Here is a link to Red Max Pro questions. I used the Zep Wet Look Floor Wax this past week and I was amazed at the results. The look is that of an almost new paint job. http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25818736.cfm
