RE: Do I have enough Truck?

Speaking from personal experience, regardless of chips, airbags ect, you will not be very happy pulling a 40 ft Cardinal with a 3/4 ton.
If you are going to pull it only 5 miles each weekend the truck will pull it. Going any greater distance would be very questionable. It is your choice. Good luck and enjoy your Cardinal

RE: Does anyone have info on Americana 5th wheel

Looking at the 2010 American models it only looks like the SKP models are Forest River Cardinals. The RT model looks very much like a Grand Junction. Definitely not a Cardinal. The Sequoyah model in not a Cardinal either nor a Grand Junction. The Travel Bug model is unfamilar to me but it is a very light weight model for small tow vehicles. It looks like Americana no longer uses strictly Cardinals.

RE: Waste Water Tote...which one?

I have the 15 gallon Tote-n-Stor. I gave $75 for it. Works good and very inexpensive compared to other brands. It does not come in a 4 wheel version, but it is a great tote for the money and empties very well.

RE: Backing a 5ver vs. a trailer?

I was pointing out that I "CAN" use my truck bed for storage, with a 5er you can have a tool box and thats about it.
True but that is not the storage usually referred to was my point. As for using my truck's bed while attached to the 5er, I have put coolers, campfire wood, tools, floor jack, even a fold up ladder, etc in mine without issue. As for the rest of the stuff I take, with a basement big enough to sleep 3 adults, if I can't fit it in there, it didn't need to go in the first place!
There is a lot of room left to use in front of the pin. I too have carried 3 bikes (layed down in front of the hitch) Coolers along the side behind the pin, firewood ect. Do I have as much as room as I would with a bumper pull...No. Do I have room to carry what I need to in the back of my bed with a fiver?... Yes. That is a whole lot more than "just a tool box".

RE: 5th Wheel Purchase

We looked at both Montana and Cardinal. We went with the Cardinal due to the floorplan and we have had a prior Forest River product and are happy with the customer service. Plus the Cardinal came from the factory with Goodyear G614s. The Montana (at that time) did not.

RE: Something new this fall

With a young child, check out Dutch Winter Wonderland in Lancaster. PA. Nice park for younger kids. I would also suggest Southwestern Michigan at some point...GREAT BEACHES and nice small beach towns. Well within 12 hours of central Tennessee.

RE: " Help " connecting Fiver to Truck

I tend to run the landing gear legs down as far as I can to get 4 holes showing. It seems to make the front gear more stable.

RE: Buckeye Lake KOA, Ohio

We have stayed there a few times, most recently 2 months ago. It is pricey but it is also one of the nicest KOAs out there. It is worth the extra money just to be close to the Pizza Cottage resteraunt.

RE: Is 35' too long and other bunkhouse ramblings

Thanks for all the replies. We originally wanted to go the fiver route, but we also carry a canoe and would even like to bring a second canoe sometimes.
There are really nice fiver layouts, like the Wildcat 32QBSS and soem Jayco models as well.
Maybe I need to ditch the TT idea and look at the fivers again. I've see a single canoe being carried by a truck with a fiver but never two boats.
Thnaks, Drew

RE: towing with a half ton

All u half tonners, check back in in 15 years and lets see what you are driving.
\
Uh and kettner, my 1997 chev was ordered special with all 450 suspension, trans, whole drive train. Not that it makes any difference.
Just as in the past 15 years the 1/2 ton trucks have become more capable and the trailers lighter I believe this trend will continue during the next 15 years. I suspect there will be more 1/2 ton trucks towing fifth wheels in the future. Not the big 32'+ fifth wheels but the 22' to 30' range.
Considering sway and WDH issues TTs have I believe these small fifth wheels would be safer in general than pulling a similar sized TT.
Since I prefer to stay in state and federal parks I doubt I will ever have a 32' or larger fifth wheel. Maybe next is a small MH but that does not make the current truck abilities any less.
Great answer. I would venture a guess that most 08 and 09 half tons are as capable (payload and towing) as a 97 Chevrolet regardless of how it was ordered. That's my guess.

RE: Reusing bed rails for hitch

I would go with new rails. When I replaced my hitch rails I used the old rails to construct a dolly for my hitch. I attached them to two 4"x 4"s and put 4 wheels on it. It fits under my workbench in the garage and makes it very easy to roll rather than carry the hitch to and from the truck. It makes it much easier now to move and store.

GREAT PLACE!!! One of the nicest themeparks/waterparks you will ever visit. The campground (Lake Rudolph) is one of our favorite places to camp. It is not a quiet campgrounds by any means but very fun for the family.

I put a small piece of 2x4 where the water drips. You can not hear the water hitting the wood from inside.

RE: I'm over loaded. Big deal?

An over the road driver who was overweight went through our township and paid a $4800 fine, he was overweight on state highways and was WAY over weight on township highways.
I drove an 18 wheeler for 7 years for a grocery distribution company. We went from Texas to Louisana 2 time a week. Each time at the scales entering Louisana we paid the overweight fine with the company credit card and continued on our way. The company had it figured out that the cost of the fine did not offset the revenue gained from the deliveries on board. Has anyone driving a private rv ever been ticketed for being overweight? How is this done on a combination that is not a comercial vehicle? Also if you are involved in an accident who, when, and how is the weight of your trailer and the contents determined? I do know 2 people who have had accidents towing a fifth wheel/toy hauler. They were never weighed. Has anyone ever been in an accident with their RV and had it weighed or taken to the scales by any agency or investigator? I keep reading all these stories but with no first hand accounts to back them up. An RV is NOT considered a commercial vehicle. With the literally thousands of RV folks on this web site has anyone ever been actually ticketed for being overweight and/or weighed by any law enforcement agency? I could be riding a bike and run into someone and have them get a lawyer and sue me.

I have a stainless steel portable I got at Lowes for $99 years ago and does a fine job. I will replace it this year with a Kumma stow and go hybrid that uses either gas or electric.
