RE: Winegard Traveler Dish for Dish network

Just for fun last night I switched the reciever from the shop with the one in the house that is hooked up to the Travler dish on the motorhome. We watched the news for 2 hours and not one pixel or drop out. I watched the reciever that I removed from the house in the shop today and not one pixel or drop out. GO figure that one out will you. My old electronics instructor from A&P school always said that this electrical stuff was about 70% magic and having worked on starters and alternators now for going on 13 years I firmly believe him and this just proves it. Thanks for all the replies hope I can help some of you some day, Jim

RE: Winegard Traveler Dish for Dish network

Okay we ran a new cable from the dish directly to the reciever and not a lot of change still getting the same pixels and drop outs but better so there is some issues with the in coach wiring. But after talking to Winegard on the phone today I tried one of our other recievers and for nearly an hour of watching it never had a single pixel or drop out problem. Not going to say that it is 100% fixed but I think I am on the right track. Now I have to call Dish and request another reciever. They have got to hate me as this will be I think the 6th one now that I have gone through. Maybe it is time to upgrade to the 510 reviever. Another $5 on the bill might be worth it to be able to record programing while watching something else at the same time. Maybe the 510 is enough better that it will not have the problems I have had with the older recievers. Thanks for the suggestions, Jim

RE: Avoid Oklahoma if retiring

Not retired yet but working on it. Should have done it several years ago but couldn't lay down my tools. Now wife is working and plans to for another 5 years at least so I might as well work. In the meantime I am also 100% service connected disabled veteran. Oregon gives me one set of plates for what ever rig I want them for and they are permenate and free once you buy them the first time. Oregon has a lot of taxes if you own property but no sales tax yet. They are about mid way on the chart. Lots to see and do in Oregon and it has all the seasons and it you don't like the weather just wait a few days and it will change. Can be very mild here in the mid Willamette Valley year around. We do have a few days above 90 in the summer and a few days below freezing in the winter but for the most part it is fairly mild. It does rain a bit here but that is what makes it so green. Property taxes are somewhat high and fuel taxes are one of the highest, .23 cents per gallon last time I looked. Also income taxes are right up at the top of the list. Not a bad place to retire, maybe not the best but certainly not the worst either. Eastern half of the state is wide open spaces and you can go all day and not see another person in many parts of the state. Really nice RV parks are few and far between but there is a lot of regular parks and lots of state parks. Roads in many places are best described as ape trails. Unless you are on interstate 5 it is probably not a good idea to be in a hurry to get anywhere with a big rig of any kind here. Jim

RE: What oil do you recommend for your diesel pusher ?

As a long time machinest rebuilding engines both large and small in my experience the best oil is Delo 400 15/40 for any application gas or diesel. I have seen Cummins engines with 750,000 miles and no measureable wear using Delo 400. I do agree with most on here though, whatever is in there continue to use that oil and change it on schedule. If you want to change to Delo or Shell then do an engine flush with the help of a good mechanic or shop. Then change the oil again at half the normal interval then again at the regular time. Be sure and change the filters each time. Once a filter plugs up it bypasses dirty oil into the system, Or no oil at all which can cause problems in a hurry. Jim

RE: RV Dealer scamed us

You really should take it back to the dealer and insist that they fix the problems or you will sue them for fraud and the cost of repairs and the trial if it gets that far. Read your contract to be sure they didn't sell it as is. Write letters to Motorhome magazine and the Good Sam magazine and tell your story along with the names and dates of all involved. Put enough pressure on them so that they will usually come to terms with you. Jim

RE: Norcold 1200 is being extended

I had a 1200 Norcold that the cooling unit failed on in Feburary of 09. Lower box got up to 65 degrees while the ice maker continued to make ice. Camping World replaced the cooling unit with a new one at that time on my extended warranty. Almost exactly 6 months later same thing happened. Camping World offered to change unit again on their dime as was still under their one year warranty. After talking to Norcold warranty department I decided that it just wasn't worth the effort to go through the work and change again. We live in our coach full time and just getting to a Camping World is at least an hour each way. We both have jobs so can't leave the coach as we need a place to sleep at night. We opted to replace the Norcold unit with a Kenmore residentual refridgerator. This unit neetly fit right in the hole that the Norcold came out of with only minor adjustment. Needed to cut the 2 inch header out and 1/8 inch from one side of the opening. Kenmore unit slid right in. It does protrud out about 6 inches further than the Norcold did. But now I have ice and water through the door and nearly double the amount of cubic feet of storage space. The Norcold was 12.6 cu.ft. while the Kenmore is 21.8 cu.ft. I can put 3 one gallon of milk jugs front to back inside and not fill all the shelf space. We are nearly always plugged into shore power and when we travel we just run the generator every couple hours or on short trips all the time. It only uses about a pint of diesel per hour. I highly recommend anyone who is a full timer like us to convert to a real refridgerator. Cost of a replacement Norcold was $4400 cost of a new Kenmore while on sale was $1300. It will take me a long time to burn up the difference in what extra diesel I will have to use while traveling to run my generator. The headaches of the RV fridge are gone now. I don't have to worry about running my battery down or the propane tank dry. I can stock enough food to last all week or longer instead of 3 or 4 days. Why anyone thinks they need an RV fridge is beyond me. You pay a lot for nothing. ANd by the way when we removed the Norcold there was a black charred area where the exhaust stack ends inside the opening. Our unit was in a slide room so no cooling vent hole to the roof. Jim

RE: Winegard Traveler Dish for Dish network

Okay seems like you all are having good results from your travler dish installations. I guess I need to have the wiring replaced between the dish and the TV. That is going to be fun as my TV is in a slide room, so not sure how the coax cables are run. This in a 2005 Winnabago Vectra FD floorplan with the side entertainment center. Which by the way if you are a TV watching person is the only way to go. I don't think there are any coaches built today that have comfortable chairs that actually face the TV. I have to wonder at just what the RV industry designers necks look like. We should force them to live in full time one of their coaches for a few months. I bet then they would make some serious changes to how the interiors are designed. I love my coach but we made some major changes to the interior in the 4 years we have owned and lived in it. Thanks again, Jim

RE: Headlight Alarm

Mike, A lot depends on the size of the battery to begin with. Next is how much amperage is being used by the headlights. Different bulbs draw different amperages. So to go from 12.5 volts down to 9 volts depending on above and the condition of your battery in an hour could be very normal. Someone else mentioned that you need to have the warning horn in a circuit that is also in the engine running circuit. So it will not alarm unless the engine is not running. And it will alarm anytime that the engine is shut off and the lights are left on. Most any good automotive electrical repair or rebuild shop should be able to make that happen for you. And good luck.

Winegard Traveler Dish for Dish network

Anyone else having problems with this dish locking onto the dish satillites. For a while we couldn't watch our local channels yet got everything else perfectly. Dish came out and changed the LNB or the head and from that time on we got the local channels but we also have lots of pixalation and drop outs to the point that programs were not watchable at all. Dish came back and changed the LNB again but it is not really any better. Signal strength is way low on many channels. We also have a standard house type dish mounted on a post along side the coach, at our normal parking spot for the rear TV, and get perfect TV with it and great signal strenth. I have talked to Winegard about it and they say it is Dish's problem Dish people seem to think it is Winegard's problem. I am about to run out of hair, not that I have much anyway, to pull here and am about to take the dish back to Camping World and tell them to put it where the sun doesn't shine. But I want to know if anyone else is having problems with this dish? Is there a solution? Does anyone know someone who is smart enough to know how to fix the problem? I am really in despart need of help and if I don't get this problem solved I may very well be in need of a coat that the sleeves fasten in the back and a rubber room. Thanks for any help, Jim
