RE: Ever Been Asked to Leave?

I have read many posts about cities with ordinances against overnighting in parking lots. As a retired police officer, I know that most depts are busy with crime, so other than a complaint from a property owner, do the police really ask you to leave? Have you been asked to leave a parking lot?
Yep. I parked behind a BurgerKing one night in a blizzard and the teenie cashier thought I was casing the joint. Cop was nice about it. I mentioned heading for a rest area and he advised against that. (Rest area was packed) I told him I would be down on the river in the city park.
At the time, I was working 12 hour shifts and driving 60 miles each way to work. We got 12 inches of heavy snow. I got a good nights sleep and showed at work 4 hours early to cover no-shows. Roads were still nearly impassable the next night, so I parked out for a second night.

RE: mobile internet stick

For $50 a month, BoostMobile has unlimited phone, text, walky-talk and web on their Motorola "i"phones, with no contract. My i290 was $50, next phone up has bluetooth and cam for $100. Tether speed is throttled to 27k using a mini usb cord. Connection is stable and fast enough for newsgroups and email. Very good surfing when wifi is not available. Payment can be made online for a small ($3) fee, or at boost outlets without fee.
Tether setup is explained HERE
USB drivers are from Motorola, and minor changes are necessary in Network Connections. Iphone will authenticate itself with Boost, leave logon and password blank.

RE: Inside wall hole repair

I assume the holes are in the wallpapered section. Take the flat of a knife and press the area around the holes as flat as you can. Then,if the holes are not too big, try filling with Colgate toothpaste. Works great on mottled beige/white wallboard to fill small holes left from picture hangers etc. Hope this helps.
Please do not fill holes with tooth paste. It will harden and hides holes well, but it is a terrible surface to paint over. At best, the paint will not stick; at worst, it may become stuck to the paint roller and wreck a large section of paint before the painter notices.
The property owner would prefer a visible defect over a hidden one which multiplies his work and wastes paint. The toothpaste must be removed and properly patched before painting.

RE: i just CANT get it

That cant be right. At 500 x 100 it makes my coach look like its 100' long???????
Try resizing just one of the measures, and check "keep aspect ratio".
You may need to try again (smaller)if the second parameter is still to large.
600x200
resize
500x167 (still too large)
resize
300x100 fits and does not distort

RE: What can I do with a cooked pork tenderloin?

I cool a loin roast and slice very thin. Then make up single-sandwich size portions for later use as needed. For bbq style, just shoot a little sauce into the bag before freezing; the slices can be chopped or shredded when done this way.
When cooking a loin, I use Mrs. Dash heavily (no salt), and brush on bbq sauce at the end. This makes a spicy crust for sandwiches.
As an alternative method for loin, slice 3/4 thick, season & flour and fry as pork chops.
I bought four loins this month at $1.59. Thawing the second for roasting tomorrow. I think I'll try fancy mustard with the spice rub.

RE: Cheap, no contract phone service, mainly for texting?

We've dropped our cell phones as not being that useful for the money. The main thing I miss, and would really like to replace is the ability to text (internationally..ie. U.S. to Canada). A close second is having a phone for emergency use. A very distant third is the ability to take pictures with my phone and send them over the internet to family.
I don't mind what I pay for the phone itself. A 'luxury' model would be kind of fun, especially if it didn't expire with some darn contract, and I would like to have one with each letter on a separate key. But where can I find the service I'm looking for without a contract?
I use a BoostMobile Unlimited for $50 per month. I get unlimited phone, walky-talk and web. Bonus is the ability to tether my laptop at about 27k using the motorola Iden series phones. My phone (i290) cost $50, but I will upgrade this month for cam and bluetooth capability. Tether is simple and stable, fast enough for text and newsgroups. Just plug in and connect from the pc.
They can be used in southern Ontario (narrow band around the lakeshore) for walky-talk and web, excluding voice) COVERAGEpdf
There is no contract and there is a lower cost (but less functional) plan available.

RE: TV HOOK UP TO RADIO SPEAKERS ??

Is it possible to hook uo the radio speakers to the tv.The radio speakers go all thrugh he coach , It would be great to get the tv to do the same.
Rich
Possible, but probably easier to go with a wireless headset package. Send unit attaches to tv. Go with a stereo rechargeable set. Batteries get expensive and stereo gives high quality sound. You'll never be satified with regular tv sound again. Get multiple headsets-- everyone sets their own sound level and balance.
Do a search for tv speakers and headsets dozens of choices in wide price ranges.
Stand alone speakers are also available.

RE: Cost of RV Parks

I've been on the road full-time for six years now. We are constantly on the move and have been in every part of the country.
I'm just amazed at how much the cost of staying at an RV Park has gone up in the last two years. It's as if the RV Park owners don't care if their potential customers continue to go RVing.
Why are you constantly on the move? Long term stays get you a lower rate.
I see a recent post about a Michigan trip. Surely you've noticed the hoards of fishermen. Soon those places will become deserted as all those same folks move to the woods squirrel/ deer/ turkey hunting. All through the state forests, generations of sportsmen have been clearing and packing down turnouts in the woods. Most of the year, those places are vacant. Along the shore, the State provides parking at scenic viewpoints, historical markers, yacht refuges, boat launches and rest areas about 50 miles apart. Don't miss acces points along rivers and at dam sites and parking areas for car pools, bike & hiking trails and county/ municipal parks.
Why *do* folks pay to "park" an RV, anyway?

RE: How do you get rid of a squirrel in a 5er?

Live trap. They can rent cheaper than buying from a good tool/wedding/carpet cleaning rental shop and some farm bureaus, or hardwares. Check Yellow Pages.
Peanut butter on crackers is usually a good bait. If he somehow steals the bait, put a gob of PB on a sheet of paper and set the trap on top so the bait is under the trigger. He will lean on the trigger trying to lick up the bait. On two door traps, just leave one door open. Easier to set a light trigger and squirrels are not afraid of closed spaces.

RE: wifi tethering

"Are you saying that I can set up my Blackberry Storm for Bluetooth and get an adaptor that allows my laptop to connect?"
Bluetooth USB adapters can be tiny enough to leave installed in the USB port. EXAMPLE The best part== they are cheap. Plug it in and forget it. Type "USB bluetooth" in your search pane for hundreds of options.

RE: How to Opt-Out of Good Sams mailings, etc.

You may have more difficulty stopping the endless phone calls. It seems that the "Member Directory" is produced by another company which will be given your PRIVATE UNLISTED number, if you are stupid enough to give GS that info. They will call 2-3 times a week seeking your subscription to the GS "Member Directory", and will continue after dozens of requests to cease and desist.
The only method to stop the calls (short of paying the ransom) is to cancel your GS membership and begin answering your phone with the greeting "Headquarters" or "5th Precinct".

RE: Water filter upside down?

Put the filter on the sink faucet and save the walking. No need to interrupt your nap with a Brita faucet filter.
There is a bypass, so you only filter the drinking water.

RE: RVing in support of some other hobby?

Just fishin', with a few deer hunts thrown in for variety. I have no use for campgrounds unless "a river runs through it". I prefer public access sites provided by the state around dams and bike trails, "Park 'n' Ride" (car pool), boat launches, and county or municipal parks.
The average driver passes dozens of prime roosting spots every day.
If you need to be surrounded by people, stick with commercial campgrounds. If you can amuse yourself in quiet solitude, pick a spot along the river.

RE: Step one. Bought the van.

Plug the holes with hole plugs. Do a search for "3/4 hole plugs". (no kidding) Example here: hole plugs
You don't need to do much.
I built a bed from 2x8 and 1/2 inch ply. Size to fit available mattress. 1x3 inside 3 inches below the top edge holds plywood in place and leaves a 2 inch lip to hold mattress, too. good storage under.
Everthing else is trim. Cheap "blue tarp makes awning.
Custom toilet seat from Cabela's fits a plastic bucket. (line w/ plastic bag for easy clean up)
Get a hibachi or cheap gril. Keep charcoal dry and fresh in plastic bucket and cap.
Carry drinkng water by gallon, up to 5 gal.
Use paper plates.
Call me when the fish are running.

RE: Driving at night on long trip

I'm a solo night driver, too.
Be alert in metro areas, especially midnight to 4am. The percentage of drunks is very high. Most are local traffic, but many are in a hurry for some reason.
Do not drive in a pack. Ease off a few hundred yards and let them clear the road. An especially good idea in bad weather.
Buy maps for the entire route. Mark your route in dark marker. Then cut out your route in a convenient width (4to 6 inches) and tape the strips together end-to-end so you can accordian fold your route map. Note restaurants, service and rest stops for future reference. Throw away the leftovers. Much easier than wrestling with a full size map while driving. Just flip your way along as you travel.
If you become tired, stop for fuel food and a nap. Remember tire, hitch and engine checks every time you stop. On extreme distances, plan a couple stops of 8-10 hours. Driving is tedious work; you need normal rest periods.

RE: Suggestions, Meal for a large group.

Navy beans w/ onion, kielasa or smoked sausage in the pot, cornbread on the side. I use precooked beans (large glass jar) to reduce cook time, and crock pot for easy serving and cleanup. Disposable foil roaster pans in the oven is a possibility.
Swiss or salisbury steak with mac & cheese.
Baked chicken quarters with creamed potatos and onions, hot dinner rolls, green beans.

RE: Internet on the road

Does anyone have any "cost-effective" solutions for receiving internet on the road? Besides staying in a park with Wifi access (many times it's a charge on your credit card) there must be an alternative method that doesn't tie you into a ongoing monthly charge.
I use Boost ($53, month-to-month)unlimited phone/ text/ walky-talk/ web. Motorola i290 phone (cheapest) , free Moto drivers, $5 mini USB cable; connects at about 20k. Fast enough for email and newsgroups.
http://www.boostmobile.com/
Instructions
Motorola Iden drivers
I believe Boost throttles the speed. I expect higher speed if dialing a paid ISP. (for example, Provide.net $15 month)
