Space Station: Norcold or Dometic?

I heard that the Space Station had pesky ammonia leak.
I was just wondering if it was equipped with Norcold or Dometic equipment?

How long before the engine stops?
I once had a car with a venting problem in the fuel tank. The car would run until the vacuum in the tank stopped the fuel flow.
Ok, the quick solution, amazing to all, was to open the fuel cap and "burp" the tank and then the car ran fine.

Much good advice here on how to trouble-shoot your problem.
My point is to simply verify that you DO have a problem. During winter months we sometimes leave our coach undriven and unstarted for a month or more after which both batteries are at full charge or very close. Certainly they are usable and we have no problems starting the coach or genny after all that time. This has been true over many years and through a couple of cyles of batteries.
Our coach is fully undercover but outdoors in the severe Chicago cold and is not connected to electricity. We do have the coach master power solenoid OFF and have the radio power switch to "HOUSE" (so that radio does not put a slow drain on engine).
Back when I had the plane, the same was true. It could be frozen in place outdoors for a month or more and would immediately start when I was able to get to it.
So, you should be able to get your coach fixed up so it can sit for at least a month and hold its house and engine battery charges.

Thanks to all who responded!
We have not forgotten you or your advice; we just have been EXTREMELY busy on a very different project and have had no time to pursue this. Come November, we expect to get back to our fridge issue.
In particular, we live in the Chicago area and I would be especially interested in any referrals to someone reasonably local who:
- could competently repair the existing cooling unit at a reasonable cost;
- has direct experience and could help us make the conversion from thr Norcol RV fridge to the residential electric unit, complete with inverter and other modifications.
Thanks again to all and come November you may get a PM from me if your post indicated you have some experience or contact that can help us directly with this project.

Conversion to a smaller residential fridge?

Anyone out there have experience with this? We have the single door Norcold gas/electric fridge. It just died with an ammonia leak and most say that it is best replaced, not repaired.
If I am going to that trouble and expense, I'd like to at least consider going residential. We don't boondock a lot so time limits without using generator probably won't be a big issue. I know I'll need an inverter.
We were just at the Hershey show and they are selling new coaches with larger, two-door residential refers having only the two wet cells to power them. I guess the newer units are much more power efficient.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has done or seriously considered this option.
Alternatively, I'd also like to hear from anyone who has successfully repaired the cooling unit for a reasonable cost.

RE: hot water tank

There is an overheat circuit breaker that gave us fits with Winnie feature of using engine coolant to give you hot water enroute - I forget the trade name.
We disconnected that feature and no more probs. Circuit breaker inconeviently around backmand hard to find. Only shuts off electric side; gas still worked.
Yours may have popped for some reason.

Best route Chicago to Hershey???

We will be traveling from the Chicago area to Hershey PA for the RV show early next week. Our planned route takes us on the Indiana and Ohio Toll Roads (I-80-90) to I-80 then to I-76 and the PA turnpike. Due to what we have heard of construction, we expect to exit I-76 near Mount Allen and take I-15 to 83 to 322 through Harrisburg into Hershey. Unfortunately, it looks like we will be hitting this at evening rush hour. We have a 34’ Class A towing a Jeep. My questions are:
- How is I-76 for road construction and condition?
- How well should our proposed route through Harrisburg work? We are trying to avoid the advertised construction on I-76
- Any other warnings or suggestions about this route?

Brand new tires - but 4-5 years old?

Would you put brand new - but older - tires on your coach?
Is there a safety issue here?
Supposing you got a very good deal on the "new" tires - would you put them on or would you demand very recently manufactured tires at full price?

RE: Motor Aid to heat water

There is no simple, temporary way to disconnect Motor Aid.
We had Winnebago permanently disable it so the the coolant's heat never reaches the hot water heater.
What happened in our case is a bit of a disconnect between Winnebago/Workhorse and Atwood, the water heater manufacturer. Each component worked well on its own, but they didn't play nicely together.
Under hot driving conditions, the heat* provided by MotorAid apparently heated the water above electric element's temperature circuit breaker's threshold and the circuit breaker would pop, disabling electric hot water.
The circuit breaker is not an auto-reset and it is located in an almost impossible position to reach unless you have an arm that articulates in about 4 places. So, no electric hot water until we could get the coach back to the shop! It's a simple reset - if you can find it and reach it!
Note that the electric hot water was never the culprit for excessively hot water and the circuit breaker's popping fixed nothing, in reality.
This was not a singular occurance but it did not always happen; it did seemed to happen after a drive under harsher driving conditions. Each time, no electric hot water, had to use the gas system.
While MotorAid was nice, in reality it was not a big deal for us. If you depart in the AM with hot water, it normally lasts all day with occasional usage. When we camp, we have hot water soon enough - the tank heats while we are setting up.
*Our engine cooling system works within limits and has continued to work flawlessly for many years now, so the issue is not that the coolant gets too hot.

Yes.
Many coaches use genny while driving for various reasons. All-electric coaches probably use genny most frequently of all.
If you search the archives, you will find numerous threads discussing the pros and cons of using genny and house air vs. dash air (no genny) while driving.
For the record, our answer to that question is BOTH. All of the components in recreational vehicles need regular exercise. We try to make sure we use all systems regularly. When we tow, most likely we will use genny and house air over the dash air to lessen load on the engine.
