RE: portable oxygen concentrator

Uh, I don't have sleep apnea and a person can have sleep apnea whether they sleep with their mouth shut or open. How you sleep has little to do with sleep apnea. All doctors I've seen re: copd and my surgery want their patients to use continuous at night because you breathe more shallowly at night and usually not deep enough to trigger a pulse dose conserver. Are you telling me your doctor actually told you to use the pulse dose at night (it's not called a sniffer valve).
Jim, I'm not Avan but we carry 4 E tanks for backup. We keep 3 in a trunk in the truck and one by the bed. Does your wife use 2 lpm for activity or when sitting around?
If you're in a position to be able to buy a used concentrator, you could use that while in the trailer and use the Eclipse (courtesy of insurance) when you're out and about.

RE: portable oxygen concentrator

T-Bone, I do occasionally use my pulse ox when I'm feeling sob for no apparent reason.
That's what I figured, that you were using a conserver (what you call a sniffer valve) with your tanks or you'd never get that time out of a tank. That's good for people who can use the pulse dose system but some can only use the continuous flow which really limits the time each tank gives them.
Most people on O2 24/7 must use continuous during the night because our breathing becomes so shallow at night, it often doesn't trigger the conserver. I'm surprised your doctor (or supplier) approved the use of pulse dose at night.

Keep him busy learning something every day. They (except Sparkey, I guess)are highly intelligent animals. Have you ever seen or read about Skidboot? Much like an Aussie when it comes to smarts.

RE: portable oxygen concentrator

I think you're looking at an old book...or something. There are several different sizes of M cylinders and the largest portable one (M9) has but 255 liters in it. Using that at 3 lpm, without a conserver, would give you just a little over an hour of O2.
An E cylinder, the one most commonly pulled behind you on a little cart, contains 680 liters of O2 and will last 3.77 hours without a conserver. T-Bone may well have been using a conserver with his tanks.
I've read many favorable comments about the Eclipse for traveling. If I were still on O2, though, I'd use my concentrator in the RV and the two homefill M6 tanks for out-and-about. I don't like having to pull something behind me.
An H cylinder is not a portable nor is it usually used for home use.

RE: Ready for H1N1 Virus

Unfortunately, for many (the young, those with certain underlying health problems and others), the swine flu can be a killer. And for those who DO get it, be aware, it goes deep into the lungs and can cause long-lasting damage.
Also unfortunately, "if it bleeds, it reads" and that's just what the press and other newspeople are doing with the swine flu. Just make sure you get your regular flu shot this year because more people die of that than the swine flu. And as others have said, wash your hands! Best preventive medicine so far.

RE: portable oxygen concentrator

T-Bone, what size tanks do you have that last 18 to 20 hours per tank on 3lpm?? They must be rather large ones (taller than 3') because the E tanks only last about 9 hours on 1 lpm.

RE: Is the new swine flu shot killing people already?

Unfortunately, even with copd, I am over 65 and am really in the last group on The List according to CDC. Since they have now decided it's not airborne but contracted through contact, I will just get my regular flu shot and be very scrupulous about hand washing and keeping my hands away from my eyes, nose and mouth. I don't think I am interested in getting the swine flu shot this year.

RE: AARP Medigap Insurance

From what I've read, AARP doesn't support any of the health care proposals on the board right now. And supposedly, if you're already on Medicare, nothing SHOULD change. Yeah, I know; famous last words.
I'd just like to know how they plan to pay to give free health care to many millions of people that are currently uninsured. AND, if they're giving free health care to them, why not us, too? Although I certainly don't want my health care to change. I can go to whom I want, when I want, where I want.
Heck, the people on Medicaid already get very low cost health care and all the welfare people get it free. The illegal aliens already get free health care. The only ones left are the street people who probably wouldn't use it anyway. Oh, and those that have worked all their lives, paid into the system and have been laid off. They should be able to get free health care for a maximum of 2 years. And all companies with over a certain number of employees should be required to offer minimum health insurance to their employees.

Uh, if your mirrors are on the door, who sees the back of it anyway? And if you're talking about mirrored sliding closet doors, they should already have a back. I'm confused.

RE: Schematic of a fiver hitch

AHA! Thanks, Bob, I finally found the specific place on the site that tells me all. Great help. And ryoung, we got ours with the trailer so it, too, was used and had rust on the plate. We painted it once but will sand and paint it again then start waxing it. Good idea.
Thanks everyone for the help. We can now move forward on the care and feeding of our hitch!

Right. If it doesn't move and should, WD40 (or lube); if it moves and it shouldn't, duct tape!

Paul, youo will pay nothing for the first dosage of your wife's meds but by then you will have hit the donut hole and will have to pay full price until you're out of it, I believe.

We want to do some maintenance work on our fiver hitch (a Reese 15K) but are unable to find anything that shows how to take the head off and what should be lubed, etc. I went to the Reese site but all they show are the types of hitches they sell. Can anyone help?

RE: Campgrounds along SR 15 in Virginia

Boy, and I was all set to look up Mountain View CG. :( Oh well, thanks for saving me the time, Avan, and for the recommendation of Greenville Farm. It just seems a bit on the pricey side for what you get but heck, I'm not in the south anymore and it's only going to get more $$ the further north we go. :( I will check out Bull Run again. There was some reason I wrote it off but I forget what it was.
Larry, how did you know we're seafood lovers? Thanks for the heads up on Blue Ridge Seafood. If we stay in the area, we WILL treat ourselves for a dinner there.

RE: Campgrounds along SR 15 in Virginia

Larry, you're right... US Route 15. And I was looking right at the shield when I typed that! DUH. We're usually good for 3 to 3 1/2 hours driving so that would get us, at the most, right around the Haymarket area. We did check the Greenville Farm Family Campground that will do in a pinch but I just don't see paying $30 + 10% tax on a place in a field with no amenities, etc.

Campgrounds along SR 15 in Virginia

We're on our slow way north to visit relatives. Currently in Wilson, NC and our first stop after this will be Appomattox, VA for one or 2 nights. After that, we want to travel SR 15 north but I surely can't find any campgrounds along this route. A couple of state parks but none for a 40' fiver. Any suggestions?
Just as an aside...even though we're from PA, I've got to say that the camping fees on this side of the MS are horrendous, especially in from VA north. I realize they have a short camping season to make their money but still.....I'm ready to head west again!

RE: CPAP and Medicare

You shouldn't have any problem getting yours because you live in one place. The main argument on Bob's is that we don't live in one place. We might just wait 'til next winter when we're in Texas for at least a month, get it then, get it read within the 30 days and see our "winter" doc for a report...or whatever. I do want to complain to Medicare but I imagine it's just another part of the new administration's cutbacks for those on medicare.
