RE: Austin and San Antonio

Thanks for the replies. Sorry to hear the drought problems continue. I thought the Hill Country was a great place for touring, bluebonnets or not. We enjoyed all the LBJ sites, the shops and restaurants at Fredericksburg, the barbecue places, the wineries, and of course Luchenback, where we felt no pain.

Austin and San Antonio

I've read the earlier posts for I-10 travelers headed west through Texas. Everyone says avoid Austin (assuming you're not there for the great times and sightseeing), and I respect those opinions but am still leaning toward going through the south end of Austin via Hwy 71 and 290 into the Hill Country, which would be nice to see again. This would be on a Monday, probably mid-day. Is the 71/290 route really so horrible? Is San Antonio that much easier or quicker? Should I just detour through Oklahoma or Kansas or through the Panama Canal? Any advice welcome from those who know the score. (I am a well-experienced driver and navigator but do like to have as much advance information as possible.) Thanks!

RE: Destination - Jacksonville FL

You might check out Whitey's Fish Camp, just a few miles southwest of Orange Park on a large creek near the St. Johns River. It has quite a few semi-permanent residents but also offers temporary spots for visitors. There's a decent local-color restaurant there, too, and it's close to grocery stores and chain restaurants in Fleming Island.

RE: Liberty State Park (Liberty Harbor)

I'll answer my own question just in case anyone else might sometime be wondering the same thing. Finally occurred to me to call the state park office and ask, and fortunately they said it would be no problem to park a smaller RV there.

RE: Liberty State Park (Liberty Harbor)

Thanks for the reply (North Florida neighbor) but I was thinking of the ferry for the Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty tours in addition to the one you mentioned (to Manhattan.) . . . I had a look on Google maps at the state park parking lot and it seems like a Class C would be ok there -- depends on the timing, I suppose.

Liberty State Park (Liberty Harbor)

Planning a trip to New York and will stay at Liberty Harbor RV Park, which I understand is close to the state park and ferries to Ellis Island. I understand it's a bit too far for easy walking distance so wonder about the prospects for parking our 25-foot Class C in the park near the ferry terminal. Any advice or suggestions much appreciated.

RE: Old Mobile Scout Leaky Roof

mlts: I live near the rvroof.com place you mentioned and will soon be having their product applied to my Class C RV. If you haven't found it already, you might search for Rhino products which I believe offers similar treatment. Maybe they have someone closer to your area.
