RE: California Beach Camping Suggestions

Our beach state parks are all accessable only through reserve America....which is almost impossible to actually get a site especially during summer months. Silver Strand down in Coronado is a great "parking lot" right at sand one....no hook ups. San Elejo is nice just above San Diego...as is Leo Carillo above Malibu....but can only get into them via reserve America. Start calling 7 months out on first day of the month and hope for the best. Good luck.

RE: Website ad removed......no word of sale.....??

Update....they were hesitant to give us any information about the possible sale of the coach until things were more settled....just heard our coach is now someone else's joy. Thanks to Camping World for being the conduit for folks to get this accomplished. We'll have to jump back into this RV thing in a few years after I retire. Thanks to all who have offered up thier sage advice over the years.

RE: Website ad removed......no word of sale.....??

Got a reply yesterday from them...."yes, you're right... only when a deposit put down...I'll find out the status". They drove it down to Valencia with our permission two weekends ago due to a credit worthy client interested and have no word as to what's going on. I just think they could do a better job keeping us informed. Frustrating

RE: visiting California

Your are justified to be leary of some of our highways....I have to say....some parts of the 5 between LA and the Tejon pass are just awfull...it will shake your coach something fierce....also the 14 north has some bad spots. They are working on the 405/605/22 merging areas and I would avoid that if you can. Here in California we're too burdened with other things to spend our tax money on, our roads have been neglegted for 40 years....it's the price you'll have to pay if you want to come down and see us.....sorry. I have yet to actually blow a tire or do front end damage....knock on wood.

Website ad removed......no word of sale.....??

So our 2006 Fleetwood Southwind has been at Bakersfield store since fourth week of January with a 90 day contract to sell. We've seen the ad on their website last seen at least a month ago by us....we know they have had numerous deals that eventually fell through due to financing. The ad has been removed as of a few days ago when we checked....we heard another deal in the works. I've sent an e-mail asking why the ad was removed....no answer as of yet. I would not think they would pull an ad until a deal was set in stone. What are your thoughts....??

RE: Wow...just saw our RV in their ad.......

I'm gonna bet when the dust settles they'll get maybe 5K or 7K out of the sale....I know they'll have to come down from the price listed now. The price of doing business.....

Wow...just saw our RV in their ad.......

We signed the contract and nothing was said about percentage taken by CW....it was written the amount we wanted from the sale. So I've been checking to see our RV on their website and today it's there. They are asking about 14K over what we want.....I guess I can't complain, because I counldn't sell it even for my price, and they are due a profit, or they would not do consignment sales. It kills me to see our rig for sale like that.....but we'll get back in when I retire.

I'm gonna miss this......but.....

As much as I hate to do it....we are selling our '06 Fleetwood Southwind 37' land yacht on consignment. Just dropped it off on Saturday in Bakersfield....we've been RVing since 2002 when our twin boys were about 7 or so....began with a pop up camper for 4 years, then a 30' 5th wheel for 4 years, then a 37' class A for 2 years. The boys are now freshmen in college, and the wife and I aren't using the RV much by ourselves. Retirement is probably 6 years away or so.....we do intend to get another smaller something then. I usually look at this site every day....there's always something of interest.....so it's hotels and timeshares for a while....I'm gonna miss it a lot. Thanks for all the great advise over the years to everyone....we'll be back someday.

Tire replacement before selling.....??

So our '06 Fleetwood Southwind has Michelin X tires on it dot dated '05....tread looks good. We are taking it out this weekend for a 300 mile round trip for New Years, then plan on driving up to Bakersfield Camping World for consignment sale in January sometime. I have a quote for 3,300 to replace them at a local RV truck dealership.....I would like to know what you would do. These are 8 year old tires, I know the coach would sell easier with new tires on it, but don't really want to spend the $$$ when I'm just selling it. I would feel better knowing it has new rubber on it when driving up to Bakersfield. What to do....????

RE: Switching ffrom 5er to MH?

I did that 2 years ago....you won't regret it and you should not have any problem finding a great used coach. We are trying to sell ours now, our boys are freshmen in college now so we aren't using it as much. When we bought it in 2010 it was a '06 37' w/ 3 slides. We got a great deal at 70k and now will have to sell it for 50k...it's worth 80k still. The economy and market dictate prices...we will need to buy another when we retire. You'll love having a class A, now driving to your destination is half the fun. Enjoy....

RE: Yes....it's still cheaper vacation......

I have to address the "Long Beach" issue.....the percieved image of Long Beach is pretty bad out there.....I will admit, on the news almost every day there is a story in Long Beach about a murder, stabbing, robbery etc....this city is VERY LARGE....there are very poor and congested areas of the city, there is a very wealthy coastal area for tourists, and there is the East side which is quite rural and quiet. Most folks on this site live in other areas than the West coast.....getting to "open spaces" is more of an issue for us in California.....

Yes....it's still cheaper vacation......

I don't care what some people will say when they see me filling up my 37' class A after a family road trip....it's usually someone looking down their nose at me with some kind of judgement as to the gas I'm using. My last trip we took the family about 300 miles each way to the river. Family of four....I told them..."gas was $335 bucks, rental of site $140 for entire week....so for $500 bucks plus food (you have to eat at home too, right...?) our family had a 5 night vacation. If we were to hotel it.....we'd need 2 rooms (our high school grad sons won't sleep in same bed anymore) and with gas for a car would surely exceed twice that much $$$ and we'd have to pay for meals the entire time. My large "land yacht" has put on 5K miles in the 2.5 years we've owned it....how many miles have you put on your commuter car....?? How much gas have you burned vs me....??? Even with gas at $4 bucks it works out dollar wise....and as I've heard people say...."the drool on my pillow is mine".....happy rving.

RE: Meal Planning

Someone already mentioned the crock pot...my wife makes a crockpot lasagna that's pretty good. We will make one and put it into the freezer in advance....when you travel just leave it out in a box and it will keep for days, then cook it when you'd like and can use the crockpot for other dishes after. The dutch oven is great as well....good recipes at "Byron's dutch oven recipes" on line....have fun.

RE: Ocean front parks in southern or central CA.

Ocean Mesa above Santa Barbara is a nice place....just on the inland side of the 101 across from El Capitan state park/beach....it's pricey but most sites have an ocean view, nice pool...ride bikes into El Capitan and go to beach.....we enjoyed it. You're pretty limited if you want full hookups and beachfront in So. Calif....

RE: Fifth Wheel to Motorhome

Only downside I can think of is the loss of your vehicle while at your destination. We absolutely love driving the coach where before we were all jammed into the truck, now getting there is half the fun. We bought a car to tow 4 down but so far can't afford the equipment needed to tow it, we use bikes for now. We love being able to just pull over and enjoy a break, and using facilities while driving.

RE: Air mattress suggestion

We replaced ours with an "Air Dream" or "Dream Air" can't remember which.....google it and see. It has an inner spring on bottom and an air mattress on top. Very comfortable for your people sleeping on it....a bit pricey at around $300....but we like ours.
