Motorhome Magazine

In the current issue of Motorhome Magazine they have an article on Pet Friendly Parks for 2013 on page 16. The picture that accompanies the article illustrates one of my pet peeves at campgrounds. The lovely family is out for a hike with their dog going through the campground. I see similar campers like this just about every time I stay at a state park. The part I'm concerned about is the size of the dog and the little girl holding the leash. When that dog sees my pet or a squirrel, or any other attraction, that dog is going to be gone either dragging the little girl or completely pulling free. I know, your dog doesn't do that, but I see it happen all the time. If you are going to walk your dog through the campground, have someone holding the leash that can control the dog. After your dog has attacked my properly chained pet is not the time to apologize for not having a proper hold on it.

RE: Hwy 64 to Hwy 65 to I 70 in Missouri

I was on the same route two weeks ago. 64 is a two lane road but has many RVs traveling to and from Bennett Springs. 65 is as good as an interstate all the way to I-70 with the exception of going slow through Sedalia.

Suburban voltage

I have a 2007 Chevy Suburban that I tow with. I bought it used and have had absolutely no problems with it, but one thing really concerns me. The voltage meter never shows a consistent amount. Today it was at 15.3 volts. I have a plug-in gauge that I double checked it with. Sometimes it will be 12.5 volts and sometimes it is right on 14. My previous Suburban was ALWAYS pegged right on 14 volts. If you have a Chevy or GMC truck newer than 2006, does yours do this? I asked the service manager at the local Chevy dealer to check it but he said there wasn't anything wrong. It just seems 15.3 is awfully high to be normal.
Thanks.

RE: another Dmb quetion form me about 12 electricity

I have a portable 12volt tv that I use in the house and the motorhome. It came with two cords. One has the cigar lighter plug and the other has the transformer and 110vt plug. Works good on either one.

RE: Single retired male, what size RV should I get?

In regard to the HR, it will probably have a tag axle. While there are some good reasons to have an extra axle, with the price of tires today you might want to give that some thought. Those extra two tires are going to cost an extra $400-$1000 when you need to change tires.
I have a 1984 HR and I like it, but for a tall person, you might want to look for something else. The bathroom is very tight, I can't stand up in the shower (I have never used it, I use the campground shower) and the hallway is pretty narrow. If I had it to do over, I'd be looking at a Winnebago with separate shower and bathroom.

RE: Starting campfires

For starting a fire, small pieces of dry wood and a piece of newspaper is all it usually takes. The butane weed-burner certainly takes the craft out of it. Sometimes, we call ignition with flammable fluids, a "Boy Scout" fire or "Boy Scout juice".
Using liquid fuel for starting any kind of fire is prohibited by the Boy Scouts in the "Guide to Safe Scouting". You might call it "Boy Scout juice" but the Boy Scouts don't use it.

RE: Add a rooftop AC on Winnebago Journey

If you are going to install it yourself, I would recommend Coleman/Airxcel.

RE: The old girl is back - where to start

I got the same email. I got all excited that the thread was active again, but, I was disappointed. Maybe we need to update what we all have been doing since the thread died. As for myself, thanks to this thread, I have completely replaced all the heating system, got the dash air conditioner working, bled the brakes, fixed the oven, had the refrigerator coil reconditioned, replaced all the shocks, and had the Quadrajet carb reconditioned. Much of that I had no idea how to do until Steve showed us how.

RE: KC RV Show 17-20 Jan

Last year I got several parts catalogs from several area dealers, which I used several times over the year. This year, didn't get a one. Didn't see any and none were offered. Hardly saw any rv brochures, either, not that I wanted to weigh down my KOA bag. And why do home improvement people think I go to an RV show to get a new roof or gutters or add a room to my house? I don't go there to buy overpriced knives, investments, or a makeover for my bathroom.

RE: KC RV Show 17-20 Jan

I saw that Good Sam Members get 50% off at the show. It was in a feed today on my Facebook feed.
If you signup or renew your membership at the show you get free admission. There is a person at a desk to the left of the ticket booths. I didn't see or hear of any 50% off.

RE: KC RV Show 17-20 Jan

Well, I went to the Mid-America RV show and quite frankly, I wasn't impressed. It seems every year it gets smaller and smaller. Twiggy the water-skiing squirrel was cute but his owner is a nut case. It seems all the trailers, with the exception of the Airstreams, were all the same with just a different name on the front. I wasn't in the market for a new RV but was hoping for some accessories or new places to camp. I was disappointed. Even Dish Network wasn't there. However, it was a chance to get out and dream about summer.

RE: KC RV Show 17-20 Jan

Good Ole Good Sam Club sent me a $1.00 off coupon through email. There is also a place on the Progressive Mid-America RV Show website where you can apply for a discount. It is in the lower left hand corner.
There are four RV dealers near me, but none of them have any discount coupons they would give me.

RE: First (and hopefully last), Blowout

You really lucked out. Usually a blowout will beat the wheel well up pretty bad. I had the tread peel off a three year old tire on my pop-up Jayco. It tore the side of the Jayco up so bad it had to be replaced. As you can see it tore a piece off the bottom sheet metal, tore off the plastic fender, and there is a crease running horizontal on the side sheet metal. What you can't see is what it did to the inside of the wheel well. That is not pretty.

RE: poor sevice at camping world at conway n.h.

There is a possibility that instead of lead weights for balancing they put beads in the tires like Equal or DynaBeads. That is what a lot of the tire stores do with bigger tires.

RE: Wind in safety chains

I've had a trailer come off the ball. It was a defective coupler. The chains on the trailer were welded on but whoever decided on the guage of the chain didn't do their homework. The safety chains peeled off like they were just glued on. The trailer first banged into my Suburban making a nasty dent in the bumper and then started backwards down the hill I was driving up. If it hadn't been for a tree that stopped it, it would have gone down a large hill into a river. You can't imagine the helpless feeling you have as your trailer goes on its merry way to wreak havoc on whoever or whatever happens to get in its way. Those chains need to be strong enough and attached strong enough to keep the trailer from getting away. They also need to be the correct length and correctly fastened to the tow vehicle. Don't think it won't happen. It's all too common. Oh, and the breakaway brakes? Even though it had the breakaway cable attached and battery, the brakes never activated.

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

I finished installing a laminate floor in the kitchen and bath. I couldn't find a base to trim it off that I liked so I used some rope and brown silicone. Looks good to me.
I'd like to see a picture of that. What an interesting idea!

RE: Bathhouse

The ladies use the RV shower. Where we camp, I don't mind walking to the showers. They aren't bad. I like a lot of water so I use the camp facilities. The RV shower is a little cramped for me but I could use it in a pinch.

RE: blow-out damage to trailer

Having suffered a blow-out on a trailer and a motorhome, I would say do anything you can to protect the RV. You usually can repair the damage, but it is never like new and those tires can do a whale of a lot of damage. You also have to consider the loss of handling when having a blow-out, but sheet metal isn't going to fix that.
