I understand, Deb. I had one dog (Mike, my sheltie/border mix) attempt to bite my vet when he injected him with the solution - he went out fighting. That wasn't as bad as having Champ cry when the solution went into him, and looking at me as if saying "Why are you doing this to me?" I did tell Mike on the way over to the vet that I was sorry, but it was still hard. In time it gets better, but I will always be there at the end - I would never just leave my pets at the vet then walk out. The most important thing is being there - it's the least you can do.

I still have the mini carton of ice cream that I gave part of to Champ after his last seizure. It's in the back of my freezer - I just can't toss it because he ate from it - even though it's been almost 2 years since he's gone and is surely out of date . I understand about Hedgehog.

Prayers and good thoughts for Lucy - hope everything turns out all right. When Andy had his yearly shots Monday, we discovered a small hard bump above his rear leg, but my vet said to leave it, just keep an eye on it. Sometimes I think these lumps and bumps affect us more than our dogs, knowing what can develop if we're not careful in monitoring them. Please keep us posted on Lucy's condition - Andy, Nicky and I send healing thoughts!

Reaction to Lepto Vaccine
I took Andy for his yearly shots today and had the vet give him the Lepto vaccine. He had it last year with no reaction, but when I got him home about 1/2 an hour later he began chewing his paws and rubbing his nose on the rug and became very agitated. I called my vet and was told to give him 2 5mg prenisolone tablets that I had on hand, in case a reaction should occur. I gave the pills as directed and also some ice cubes to chew on, so he would stop chewing on his paws. He calmed down in about 1/2 an hour and did not chew on his paws anymore. The sheltie rescue site had cautioned about the use of the Lepto vaccine in shelties, but there was no reaction last year, and I wanted to have him get the vaccine because of the wildlife we may encounter in some campgrounds. I was told that the urine of racoons and other wild animals may have Lepto in it, and I wanted him to be safe from acquiring it. Now I wonder if I did the right thing - he really was uncomfortable until the prednisolone took effect. I wonder if anyone else had this happen to their dogs from this particular vaccine. Anyway, he's fine now - glad the shots are over for this year!

I hope things settle down for Gretchen and you, and that she begins to feel better. As for the prednisone, my hubby has to take a maintenance dose every day for his gout, and has been doing this for a few months now. If he doesn't, he gets painful flareups in his ankles and wrists. He hates to take it but it does the job. Hopefully the eye drops and pills will stabilize her and prevent her from getting worse. Of course prayers and good thoughts are coming her way, and good wishes from Andy and Nicky.

Dogs at Niagara Falls, NY
Can you take your dog to Niagara Falls, NY? The state park information guide states they cannot be on any boardwalk or improved walkway. What is an improved walkway? Does that mean if it is paved? Would we have to leave our dog in the car while we were walking around Goat Island? We are thinking of going there in mid May, but it can still be warm in a car, and this would be a stop on our way home we would not be staying there. Any suggestions would be helpful, like if they have kennels like at Disney. Thanks!

Wow! The biggest one at our barn is 17 hands, a TB mare who's in Nicky's group of 5 mares. Nicky is 14.3 hands, and that's tall enough for me! Your sister's horse is beautiful, and all the horses look scruffy now because of their winter coats. Thanks for sharing the photo - hope all goes sell for Rudy!
