RE: Water won't boil??

Actually water will boil at a lower temperature at altitude. At 7000 feet water boils at 198 f vs 212 f at sea level. The problem at altitude it will take longer to cook something like beans due to the lower temperature.
There is a joke how Cimarron Colorado got its name. At 6800 ft an old timer was trying to cook some beans. After several hours of simmering the old timer said cimmarron on you $%& cimmarron on. There are many places in the old west that do not have the correct spelling as the people of that time were often poorly educated.

RE: Bicycle stolen at Sam Town Las Vegas

Remember New York city mayor "Rudy" Giuliani! Before he took office New York was one of the most crime ridden cities in the world. At the time he left office it was one of the safest cities in the world. How did he do it? He concentrated on the small stuff such a bicycle theft. He determined if you take care of the small stuff it will take care of the bigger stuff.
I suspect Las Vegas will not do anything even if Sam's were to catch a bicycle thief. If Las Vegas would take the same stance that New York had with Giuliani then Sam's could take care of the problem and at the same time Las Vegas may become a city that would be safe to visit which it is not today.

RE: More Fifth-wheels than TTs?

I spend my winters in Yuma,Az. My exercise routine is to ride a bicycle around all of the neighborhoods. Yuma is a RV mecca. In the area I live in RV's account for close to 90% of the living space with Homes about 10%. I would say the 5th wheel trailer is number one with the Class A Motor Home a close second and travel trailers a distant 3rd.
On a recent 200 mile trip on Memorial day with many returning from various camping adventures the 5th wheel was about 3/4 of the units I saw and travel Trailer about 1/4 with Class A motor homes the balance. People do not seem to take Class A's out in the boondocks camping.

RE: Looking for Input on the Grand Canyon Train.

I like trains and the history about trains. When we took the train we booked the Luxury Dome Class. It was a little more spendy but worth it to me. Children under 15 are not allowed on the car. We had a train ride with the Durango-Silverton ruined by three children that yelled, cried and basically a total nuisance during the trip.
If you do drive to the canyon there is an air Museum Planes of Fame on the way that is worth the stop if you like airplanes.

RE: TPMS. Necessary or just peace of mind?

TPMS is peace of mind. Of course, that means you need to check the tire pressure on a regular basis with a tire gauge. Also, you can bump each tire with a hammer for a rough idea of tire pressure. When I got a nail in one of my duallys, the hammer test is how I found out it was losing pressure. If one of the tires loses 10 psi, you can really tell the difference in sound long before the tire goes flat. But you STILL need to use a tire gauge on a regular basis. If you have a TPMS that has proven to be accurate, why do you need to check the tires with a pressure gauge? You can check ALL tire pressures at a glance on the TPMS display.
I checked mine regularly when I first got my TST system, but when the readouts were consistently within 1psi of the gauge reading I figured that was good enough.
I agree. Takes less than a minute to check the pressure in all 10 of my tires before each trip and several times during a trip. I say BS to those who claim to check pressures before every trip and every two hours during a trip with a pressure gauge. Plus it does not matter how careful you are you always lose some air each time you check with a gauge and take the chance of a Schrader valve not sealing after the check.

RE: Stuck in the mud

DO NOT ALLOW the tow driver to attach anything to the front axle! My father had a towing business. He had an inexperienced tow driver hook to the front axle of a truck stuck in the mud. All that came out of the mud hole was the front axle. The truck stayed in the mud hole. My father had a very expensive repair to pay for because of that error. There is a You Tube video of the front axle being pulled off of a Jeep that was stuck in a mud hole. Jeep axle failureI don't think that Jeep video applies to a motorhome. It really depends on how bad it is stuck. If it will almost get out on its own, but just needs minor help, the axle isn't going to come off the vehicle. If the differential is on the ground, that would be a different story.
To the OP. It is your Motorhome and the axles on it are low to the ground and easy to throw a chain around. The experts have spoken so go for it. As for the jeep video the jeep may go 3500 lbs and your motorhome may go beyond 25,000 lbs so I agree the jeep video does not apply.

RE: TPMS. Necessary or just peace of mind?

That may be true but if it were a real issue there would be more rubber debris on the road considering the number of 18 wheelers, multi axle dump trucks and specialty vehicles that also pivot on their wheels
Not sure where you travel but I see a lot of large truck tire debris when I travel. Just did a short run of 160 miles one way and I bet I saw at least a dozen truck tire treads that had not been cleaned off the highway.

RE: Winter in Nevada? Be aware

It snows in Nevada. This is one snowbird that definitely will not spend more than 30 days in Nevada. Governments are some of the most stupid identities on the face of the planet. Then they allow illegals to live in their state and even give them welfare, drivers licenses and free education. Go figure.

RE: Grease inside brakes

If the brakes grab as you indicated they have had grease on them. They can not be cleaned and will need to be replaced. A grease contaminated brake shoe will not do the job if you ever have to do an emergency stop from 60 mph.

RE: How do you hook up your 5th by yourself?

Here is how I get my truck lined up. When hitched look in your windshield rear view mirror. Find a spot on the trailer you can see easy. Put a small piece of electrical tape near that spot dead center of the trailer. Now when looking at that spot through the mirror put a small piece of electrical tape on the rear window of the truck dead center of the window in line with the spot on the trailer. Now put a small piece of tape on the rear view mirror that is in line with the truck rear window and the spot on the trailer. Now when ever you back to the trailer just line up the three spots like aiming a gun. You will be dead on every time and if the trailer pin is at the correct height the pin should go into the hitch with very little error. I stop when the pin is just inside the truck bed and make sure my pin height is correct and that I am in line with the hitch but this would not be necessary if you are sure the pin height is correct. I also have the mirror on my trailer to watch the last couple feet. But the mirror does not work well to get lined up as when you can see things in the mirror it is too late for any significant corrections. And many trailer fronts are not at a good angle for the mirror. Most of the new trailers have the mirror as standard equipment.

RE: Thoughts on my scale numbers?

I would say you are a little light on tongue weight. I calculate 9.6%.
15% would give you a better handling trailer. I would also get some more weight on the front axle of the truck. Individual weights on the trailer axles would be suggested to check tire ratings and if the axles are sharing the trailer weight.

RE: how much ice in black tank to clean sensor?

I use the cheapest automatic liquid dish washer soap I can buy. I use about a cup after every time I empty the black tank. At the end of the season two bags of ice on the way home from last trip of the season.

Weigh your trailer axles when it is loaded and nose high. I suspect you will find the equalizes do not do much equalizing.

RE: Pin Box Shock Supressor

I have the 5th airborne and it is a great product. I do a lot of towing in Arizona. Having the air bag totally protected from the sun should be a big plus. As for the pivot point to the center of the air bag distance that distance is adjustable on the 5th airborne. Enables you to adjust for your pin weight. I set mine so my air pressure was in the 60 psi area.

RE: Longest Satisfactory Use of Easy Lube Axles?

Once grease has got on a brake shoe it can not be cleaned off. The shoe has to be replaced. If it is used after cleaning it will not have the same braking effort that the other wheels have. It is recommended that all shoes be replaced at the same time for even braking on all 4.
If braking is not even one or more of the tires may be flat spotted or have excessive wear.
I inspect my brakes every two years and repack and replace the seals. No need for Easy Lube if you inspect brakes.
When my trailer was new I had brake problems and found grease on three of the four wheels from the factory. Even with a new trailer I would recommend inspecting the brakes and replacing the cheap factory grease seals before the first trip.

RE: Sherline Scale

The best thing to do is a CAT scale. Then you get the tongue weight plus each axle on the TV and trailer. Also if the WD system is set up correct.

RE: No brakes!

Do yourself and everyone on the road a favor. Get a good brake controller such as the Prodigy P2 or P3. You have a time based unit which will not work very good with a large trailer such as yours.
