RE: Back to School

This is the time of year when DW and I laugh & smile & cheer because WE don't have to go back anymore.

RE: What did you do to your TT or FW today?

I washed the mildew out of the fridge. I always leave it on. It was plugged in but somehow the plug got loosened enough to cut off the juice. When the batteries died, the fridge quit. BTW, our fridge is a compressor 12 volt so no heating element in it. Gotta have the trailer ready to go to a rally next weekend.

RE: Summertime passion!

Travel is at the top of my list. I'd rather be going someplace towing our Egg Camper than doing anything else but, wherever we go, I GOTTA have my cameras along.

RE: Why are TC's white

White for heat reflectance. You see more white vehicles in Arizona than anyplace else.

RE: Protocol for stopover?

FWIW, when we're snowbirding we both use our own facilities exclusively unless we're away from the trailer. Even this way, we only dump once a week and our tanks aren't as large as a lot of people have. Regarding dumping so as to not have extra weight to carry, weight has little to no impact on fuel economy. Wind resistance is the big mpg killer. We had two TTs where the lighter one (by about 3000 pounds) and shorter one and we got better mpg with the longer & heavier because it was way more aerodynamic. Same driving with both. The problem I'd see with dumping every night would be that, in a day's time, you'd put a lot more liquid in than solid. Unless you'd add water, you probably would not have enough liquid to flush out the solids. When you get a build-up of solids in your tank, it isn't pretty. Don't ask how I know.

RE: Newbie needs advice!

All trailers used to be wood framed. There are many trailers from the 1940s and up still in use. Key is to keep the water out so nothing rots.

RE: GS Roadside Experience

We've been towed three times, had them twice for tire repair, and once for lockout of vehicle. Excellent service every time. First usage was 13 or so years ago.

RE: National Park Permits

I've had my geezer pass (correct name) for 14 years and broke even on the cost the second time we used it. Hard to imagine how many $$$ we've saved over those years. If it gets too beat up you can get it replaced for free. Mine has been replaced twice.

I find it's interesting that some people answered the question while others saw fit to find fault with it.

For those of you who think I'm being judgmental, I'm NOT! I'm simply curious. Am I not allowed to be curious? Aren't you being judgmental by telling me that I am?

Although I'm seeing more small trailers, most seem to be big and bigger. I don't understand why so many people want those huge things. I understand if they're full timers because that's their home and I understand that people who have several kids need more space but why so big if you don't need it? Our 31 ft Kodiak is used ONLY for snowbirding. Our 17 ft Egg Camper is for travelling and fun. We're gonna try snowbirding this coming winter with the Egg Camper. My rule of thumb is to get the smallest whatever that will do the job you want done. Or am I just an old curmudgeon? Yeah, probably, but I still don't understand.

RE: 6.4 Diesel for fun?

After 4 Dodge diesels I'm now with a 5.3 liter Chevy with gas. Now I'm kinda wondering what I really wanted the diesels for. With the over the road empty the Chevy gets the same mpg as the last diesel, about 1-2 less than the first three. Towing averages 2-3 mpg less than the diesels. I might add that I got better towing with the gas than I expected. Just can't tow the Kodiak in overdrive. I can with the Egg Camper but there's almost a 4000 pound weight difference. What the heck, if you want it and can afford it, it's your money.

RE: The old 1/2 Ton Towing a Fifth Wheel debate

I went looking for a trailer in AZ. Sales guy wanted to know what I was gonna tow it with. I told him a 2500 Dodge diesel. His response was that it would "tow ANYTHING on their lot". Of course, I knew better than that. Well, in one respect he was right. The engine did have the muscle to do it.

We've travelled I-40 to Flagstaff for years. We've stayed at a lot of places along there. Plenty to choose from.

I'm glad you called the geezer pass by its real name. Those pc people insist on calling it a senior pass or a golden age pass.

RE: Who Makes The Top Quality Small TT..

Any of the molded fiberglass trailers. Casita, Scamp, Egg Camper, Escape, Trillium, Lil Snoozy, Parkliner, etc. All small and very high quality. Some are being towed with 4 and 6 cylinder vehicles.

RE: Where you going for Labor Day?

We'll be home for Labor Day but the next weekend we're going to a molded fiberglass trailer rally at Algonac state park in Michigan. Leaving there we'll be going on to Colorado for just exploring (again!) and picture taking. Maybe meet up with some friends who live there.

RE: What are you towing your small TT with?

We tow our 31 ft Kodiak with our Chevy Silverado. We also tow our 17 ft Egg Camper (less than half the weight of the Kodiak) with the Chevy. Our Chrysler minivan does a fine job of towing the Egg Camper but the Chevy seats are WAY more comfortable than the ones in the Chrysler and there's NO mileage penalty with the Chevy V8 compared to the Chrysler V6.

RE: 4WD or 2WD

When we had our 5th wheel hitched to our 4x2 truck to head for our snowbirding area and could not even get up a slight incline in our driveway (had to call a wrecker to get out of the yard) with packed snow on it, our decision was made. When we got home in the spring of 2001 we just about immediately got a 4x4. Some times we've needed it in either snow or wet grass and sometimes we just used it to do some fun things. I can tell you that we'll never again be without some kind of 4x4. As for you? Only you can answer that and we can only speak for ourselves.
