RE: Electric Awning..Why So Many Negative Comments Here?

No personal negative experiences here. My guess is that, in forums, you normally hear about negative experiences in responses other than those who are satisfied. In the CGs, you also may have heard the experiences of those who have had theirs for shorter periods of time than respondents here. Often, you get what is known as the "Cadillac response" in psychology when speaking to people. This is the tendency of people, when directly confronted, to try to justify investments they have made as being intelligent investments. This is not a factor with people who respond to anonymous inquiries on the web. Thus you hear the actual, rather than defensive, experiences. This means that, when we are sitting around the camppfire, I might not want to say that I had made a mistake in buying something. If you had 3 out of 17 people who admitted to having problems, that is almost 20% who had already had problems in the varying periods of time they have had the awnings. This percentage may easily increase over time.

RE: Campground Memberships

Others can post about their private CG club memberships and be correct in their experience. Personally, among the stupidest investments I have ever convinced my DW to follow me in was a membership in CCC. Some might come out okay in this. Ours was a total disaster. I put thousands into a membership that had as our home CG a CG that changed their rules before we even got an RV. They banned pets before what would have been our first visit with our Collies. They were quiet, extremely friendly, and banned. Boarding them every time we wanted to use our membership would have cost more than renting a TT there. Your home CG is free to change their rules or annual maintainence prices. You are NOT free to cancel your membership without charge if they do so. Ours would allow us to cancel our membership if we paid the entire cost minus yearly expenses for the years we had NOT used. Yes, even though they were the one's changing the contract, we would have to take them to court to verify the rules of our end of the contract. We won. But, it was a court case if you have ever had to put up with doing that. My recommendation would be in favor of Passport America, that we have consistantly gotten a profit from, and probably other yearly membership investments. From personal, and reading experience, I would recommend against most other, for most people, investments. You can do as you like. Good luck.

RE: Boring DEEP holes!

The link to the Harbor Freight five piece set of 18" bits for $10 is below. I found the link after you had answered my original post. Here tis Whether I have one..or five..or twenty of them...18 inch long bits wont do me one iota of good when I have to drill a 32 inch deep hole! (PLEASE read my opening post as to hole depth) The idea was that, if you had clearance, you could drill in 18" from each end for a total of 36". I had no problem with reading your question. My question was only if you had clearance to drill in from each end to get to the center. Sorry if you misunderstood.

RE: Towing a boat behind a TT

Definitely check local laws if you leave MT. Double towing with a TT is illegal in some of them. Towing Laws TT are more subject to sway than 5th wheels. Adding an extra source of flex to the rear of a tt just makes it even edgier. The tongue weight of the boat will also take weight off of the front of the TT. As the boat trailers wheels hit bumps, the effect will increase. This will create a variance in how much the boat reduces TT tongue weight. Counter this or that will add further to your instability. Good luck.

RE: Boring DEEP holes!

I could not tell from your post. But, if you have clearance to insert long drill bits, they cost much less than $60. I almost bought a few sizes at Harbor Freight that cost significantly less than that. 5 piece set for $10. They are 18" long.

RE: How did your first rv trip go?

Our first rv outing was perfect. Set it up in one loop of the driveway popped out the awning, spread the rug and put out the chairs for a grill out weekend with the kids and grandkids. Found several things that we had not realized were important for the rv lifestyle. Had to walk all the way to the house for most of them. Made out a list for the things that we wuld want especially for the rv and the first CG trip the next week went smoothly. It was later on that we ran into the little things that break.

RE: Refrigerator vent cover blew off!!

I know that they do vary in size. How many different sizes there are, I don't know. I would not think that each brand/year is unique. I had one for our 1998 TT blow off in FL. I had to get the replacement from a Dutchmen parts dealership. Luckily, there was one less than 100 miles away and we were going to drive 60 of it anyway.

RE: air card security

My aircard network did not show up on the standard wireless network scans a computer makes when doing a search for wireless connections. Unless that has changed, you would have the added security of most people not even knowing your connection existed. But, your signals would be on the airways the same as other transmissions. Beyond that it would depend on your provider and steps you take.

RE: Digital TV vs Converter Box

ABC.com - HDTV FAQ's "HD offers at least 720 lines of resolution, which is at least twice that of analog television. You can expect razor sharp images from HD..." The best widespread HD is now 1080 lines. The converter box allows your tv to receive digital signals. It does not improve your actual tv components. Fairly complete info on comparison. You can click previous and next page option at link for more info.

RE: Lifting 3000W gensets into TV

Why not just go to the gym or similar so that you can do things an old man can't. I'm just saying. If you don't do what you can, you will soon find you can't do what you used ta could do. Advice from an old man who still can. If you don't do it this year, you won't be able to do it next year. I haven't been to the gym since yesterday. Do what you want. Use it or die. Possibly an over-simplification, but, not wrong. I learned from those who didn't. Several of those who retired when I did are now former breathing individuals. Just kidding. I use some energy saving accessories too. I use 2x12's to help me get my SuperGlide into the truck. If I can lift it without pain, I lift it. Geez, I'm sorry. I sound like some life-advise guru that I'm not.

RE: Need some ideas on storage / movies batteries from tongue...

Often the rear bumper is not welded as well as it should be. Have someone who knows what they are doing do a professional job. Have a receiver hitch welded to the frame by someone you trust. Then you have a firm base to add stuff to the rear of your TT like maybe a generator, receiver mounted storage box, etc. My only advise beyond that would be to have an actual measurement of weight done by a truck stop or similar scale done so that you are sure you are correct in your theory that you need to add weight to the rear to correct an excessive tongue weight bias. Normally, only a snowbird/full-timer etc would be adding enough weight to create a situation where there is excessive weight ahead of the axles.

RE: Weighing a TT, where?

Truck stops normally have them. Various other places do also. The landfill where we used to live has one. Another facility that accepted yard waste has one. A farmers co-op near where we lived has one. I would pull on the scale with just the truck and then again with the TT attached to get a simple TT weight for free at those places. The scales at the truck stops allow this to be done simultaneously and also to find the weight on front and rear truck axles along with TT weight. If they are not busy, you can do a little more jockying to find out some other weights, but, truck stops charge.

RE: Starting full-time whith kids in college?

As mentioned above, students will only be visiting when school is out if they live away from home. They either have an apartment to keep their stuff in, or, they do not have a house full of stuff to require a very large rental or other family member storage area. They can travel with you for a little while and enjoy their stay more than the same old same old at home. You all can visit the other kids/siblings where they live now for a little while without them having to have enough room for all of you. You can even stop near where you live now for awhile so they can see old friends also. You can camp in/near the town they are studying in to make them visiting you more convenient than it is now if they want (or don't mind you visiting) during the school term. He will be pushing 70. I believe the saying is 'If not now, when'. Chances are, if she is independant, she doesn't want to spend months and months at a time with her parents anyway. It's called freedom and options.

RE: Travel with water

In addition to my first post that I edited to mention GVWR of TT this AM, there was one final reason to carry full tank if possible that I did not see in any other comments. Sorry if I missed. My TT fresh tank was under the dinette on the floor by the axles on the opposite side from the weight of the frig and furnace. A full tank balenced the weight of the TT more toward the center of the TT

RE: Why would I choose a Super C vs Normal C

Normally they have a heavier duty truck underneath them. A "C" is often at or over it's capacity when traveling. A Super often gives you increased ability to tow something behind or load more accessories and stuff in/on. A Super gives you a Kodiak or better. A "C" gives you a 450 most likely. There probably are exceptions.

RE: Travel with water

RV'a are made to be sort of SELF CONTAINED, which means you leave home with a full tank of fresh water and empty grey and black tanks. Also, full tanks of propane helps! Above is correct. I often didn't when we had a 1/2 ton because we were probably at the allowable GVWR of the TT without much water due to carrying a snowbirds full load. Going over tow capacity is more of a problem to the truck than a full water tank is to the TT.

RE: What is a reasonable awning lifespan?

Ours spent ten years in OH except for a few winters in FL, TX, and AZ. Mostly local Ohio camping from April until Oct except some KY/TN type of stuff. I did make efforts to keep water out of the awning when rolled. Still had so heavy cleaning jobs. But, it stilled looked pretty good when we passed the TT on the the kids.

RE: Where to go during the winter Texas or Florida ?

We were Ohioans who started birding in FL. We wanted to be warm to justify the miles travelled. We checked out east and west coasts below the "freeze line" (basically south of most of Lake Okeechobee). Didn't like the number of cubic people per acre in coastal areas. Didn't like the near complete lack of many things or the black dust settling on the vehicles from cane field burns in central FL. The next year we headed for Austin TX as a possible new home and then on down to the Brownsville area. Much of Texas gets almost as much rain as Ohio, plenty of wind, and is not really that warm mid-winter except in the RGV. We checked out NM in the middle and then on into AZ. That's where we liked our winters best and where we have bought a new base home.

RE: Campsite saving / holding in state parks

well.. seems we have opened this can of worms anyway.. So.. If you reserve a site via internet, phone or whatever.. months in advance, pay for it.. and nobody else can get it.. it's ok. But if I make the effort to go to the CG.. pay for the site.. and even pay for the days until I occupy (which you don't when you reserve).. I am inconsiderate? You sucked in another fish with your can of worms. While I have personal reasons I don't like reservation systems, at least those people are planning on actually making use of the site they have kept me from using that day. I think that taking something you have no intention of using just to keep someone else from having it is pretty low. But, as you say, you paid for it and have the right to do with it as you wish. Morals and laws are not the same things. That people are allowed to waste many of the limited number of campsites in this way, speaks highly of both reservation systems and requiring people to actually occupy sites they prevent others from using.
