RE: Tech support and tips column

I only noticed it when I read a post about it. Now I see the heading over an empty column but nothing more. Is the reason I can't see any of the tips related to my software or hardware? I'm using Safari on a iMac G5. I'm not particularly computer literate. MarvI have Firefox with Adblock and I only see the heading also. If I turn Adblock off, I can see the Tips text. I would like it left that way, so I have a choice to see the Tips or not.

RE: Another Cdn border crossing problem thread

What was the outcome for the net member and family? Posted: 11/24/09 01:44pm rvcruiser last said, "Just got a hurried phone call from daughter. They are re-entering Canada and because they are officially 'deported' they are being flagged at the Canadian border now. She was crying." Closed thread link.

RE: Quick Overnight stays

When on the road, trying to cover maximum miles, I've had good luck stopping at churches. Phone numbers are usually posted and I always ask. Frequently, the person I talk to will point out where there is an electric plug I can use for the night. Always make a donation.

RE: external wifi antenna

Here is the antenna I use. http://www.mytripjournal.com/images/websites/25/25900/20093020756484.jpg width=200 Here is the Hawking adapter I use. http://www.gohawking.com/store/images/HWUG1.gif width=200 The cable from the antenna replaced the little antenna on the adapter. This gives me a very directional 14db antenna gain. The only disadvantage is that I have to rotate the antenna mast by hand to aim. Once aimed, I'm set.

RE: Get rid of the tips!

I use Rirefox with Adblock Plus and ALL advertisements AND the Tips, which I assume are ads, are blocked from showing. I really don't know what all the fuss is all about.'They' can't get rid of them. 'You' can and don't understand their issue Step into 'their' shoes for a moment, then rethink your comment... I'll ask you why you installed adblock, script blocker, etc on your system. Bet you would be bugged big time if and when they figure out a way to get around your force shields... :(Ah... Yes... May the force be with me... :) The reason why I use adblock, script blocker, etc on my system is that I have never been one to shop for the sake of shopping. If there is a product I want, I will do a little research, go to the store, purchase, and get out. No dawdling. And, in the meantime I am not interested in looking at what someone else thinks I want to look at. This is probably why I have been called an Ad Manager's worst nightmare. :) May the force continue to be with me...

RE: Most reliable laptops?

Interesting info in this study, however there is a piece of data missing that may be important in making decisions about laptop purchases. A breakdown on Netbooks, Entry-level Laptops, and Premium Laptops in combination with manufacturers would give a more complete picture. For example: Of the manufacturers listed, ASUS, Toshiba, Sony, Apple, Dell, Leveno, Acer, Gateway, and HP which ones had units that qualified as Netbooks? Then knowing the failure rate of that subgroup would be helpful. Same for Entry-level and Premium levels. I suspect that most people shopping for laptops will prioritize the three elements of size, functionality, and price. Only if there are two or more units that are close in the decision making, will an element of failure rate come into consideration. Also, while it has been quite some time since I shopped for a laptop, doesn't Apple tend to run quite a bit more in price with comparable size and functionality in PCs? If this is the case, the Apple data in this report may be skewed toward the Premium group. I'M NOT APPLE BASHING! I'm just making an observation and asking questions.

Best route from US101 to I5

In mid February I will be traveling South on US101 from Astoria Oregon and want to cross to SR99 in central California. At that time of year, is it best to cross on SR 20 from Calpella to Williams or take SR128/SR29/SR12 from Geyserville to Lodi? I want to avoid potential ice/snow while crossing. Thanks

RE: Picking out Full Timers

My point is, there is NO particular "look" to help you make your selection of who to talk to. Just visit with people. You will find out who stays in a location longer than others, and who will know the best restaurants or the best resource to address any of your questions.

RE: Picking out Full Timers

I've seen more misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and arguments over this type of profiling than any other issue RVers bring up. As you stated, how about visiting fellow RVers, get to know each individual, share experiences, and recognize there is something that, even if we can't identify it, that draws us to this lifestyle. There are some who, even though my rig is a quality unit, is well maintained, is spotless, and I am a retired, educated, professional with significant means to support myself, will call me homeless trailer trash. Reality is that there is no generalization that accurately describes the wide range of differences in individuals.

RE: "check in" process at national parks / forests?

:h "background check" Never heard of that at any overnight park. Monthly site rentals, yes. Overnights, no.

RE: design your own workamping job?

Thank you for your reply. How did you approach the state park? :h I guess I don't understand your question. :h Park staff are a very friendly sort and if one person can't set up some sort of trade for me, they are always able to direct me to the person in charge of volunteers. In this day of budget cutbacks, park staff are even more appreciative of volunteers. Also, most states have a volunteer network and coordinator you can contact through that state's state park webpage. You can find openings at parks and sign up to be at a park for a month at a time.

RE: design your own workamping job?

I've done this many times in several states. Typically, volunteering in state campgrounds run around 20-24 hours per week per couple (not per individual) in exchange for a full hookup site. Never done a National Park, but I would think a similar arrangement could be made.

RE: Is your RV a toy?

Discussions about definitions are a good source of entertainment here on the forums. These discussions are generally philosophical in nature and assign a stereotype and/or generalization that rarely fit any particular individual. My point is... What difference does it make? Toy? Amusement? Hobby? Lifestyle? Home? Depreciating? Appreciating? I make money to spend on things and activities that give me joy. For me, money is a means to an end, and if collecting money (appreciating investments) is what gives you joy, or is your "end", then who am I to argue. Admittedly, I will never collect a lot of money. However, I have enough to enjoy my family, friends, freedom, RVing, wanderlust, etc, etc. I experience joy each and every day. Full-time traveler since October 2004.

RE: What is your favorite Fall/Winter RV meal?

ANY weather is barbecue weather! :) Somehow a barbecued T-bone seems to taste better when I'm standing in two feet of snow. We do slow down using the grill in the winter and it only gets used 2-3 times a week. I also barbecue a turkey, ham, or roast for holidays. Although, I also like homemade chili.

RE: Insurance Help/Advice

I used to have GMAC. Switched some time ago due to lower rates with Progressive. However, I don't know what GMAC is like now that the insurance division has been bought out by some other company. I've found that Progressive is very responsive and understands full-timers.

RE: Replacing incan lights with LED...what, where, how?

My rig has these dual bulb incandescent lights that are too bright and get way too hot. So of course I'm looking to change them to LED. Color rendition (tint) is important to me so what would you recommend?I have the same questions... When I first started looking at the LEDs I gave up due to the high cost. So, what I did was locate lower wattage wedge style bulbs (less bright and cooler) at the Bulbman. This site also has the bayonet style bulb in many wattages. Both styles run about 50-60 cents each. Since the prices have gone down, I have been looking at the LEDs again and have been unable to locate a chart that cross references wedge style bulbs to a same intensity LED configuration. Would it be some sort of lumen comparison? I haven't found any comparisons anywhere. And a color spectrum comparison would be nice as well. Does anyone know where such a comparison is located? The bulbs I am currently using are; 921 18watt 1.5amp 908 9watt 0.75amp 918 7watt 0.58amp 901 4watt 0.33amp

RE: Workamping blog

...We have found a wide variety of positions available out there... ...just hard to shut us up.LOL! Yes, the wide variety of positions gives us a lot to talk about doesn't it. :) The best sources for us are workamper.com and work@koa. You have to pay to sign up for either one. But, it is worth it. As far as a blog, I dunno... We just post our resume and contact campgrounds and other potential employers when they post openings. We also plan at least a year in advance. Been doing it for five years now.
