RE: MI bound

Heading to Mottville MI then to Shelbyville IL and Bono AR. Once we depart the midwest we are heading for the South West, my wife has never seen the Grand Canyon. All the time pressure to get to a destination will be off down there so just meandering around. I have my RC sailplane standing in the shower and intend to get some good flight time in the desert thermals. The plane is along with much partner objections but so far has not been in the way.
Doing 400/450 mile days but only for one more day. Have to stop about every hour and a half because driver, co pilot, or dog either has to pee or is hungry. Being a old curmudgeon I do all the driving and keep a supply of red bull on hand. After owning this truck for 7 plus years I still find myself saying daily that I love this truck.
Anyone know what the tree like tower with large golf balls and baseballs is. It is very near Bonneyville salt flats. Cell tower??

MI bound

Sitting in a Flying J in mid Iowa. No rain or snow from CA but strong wind in WY. 67 mph gusts while trying to sleep in a FJ in mid WY. Lost my exhaust brake for a day but back now, have no idea why. Just barely avoided a large deer last night, gave new meaning to heart throb. Pushing my truck pretty hard, averaging around 60/65 mph. After the last 6 years of B100 I had forgotten how loud the motor is on diesel and how smelly. Adding 2 cycle oil to the diesel in hope of getting back some of the lube for the pump that I lost when having to give up biodiesel.

RE: Bump Stops

A truck sitting atop air bags without the overloads in play is like sitting on a bowl of jello. Lower the pressure in the bags till the overloads take some load.

RE: diesel injectors

Raften,
I'm curious --- why??
Where in the engine operating instructions did it say to use anything other than #2 diesel fuel.
Mostly because I have been involved in tear downs of 5.9 CTD's and the ones that ran either/or biodiesel or some sort of lubrication added to the fuel showed a marked decrease in fuel delivery sytem problems (injection pumps). My motor vintage has a well known problematic pump and I feel it needs more lube than ULSD provides. As for the engine operating instructions, they did not deal with ULSD in '01, and I became my own warrenty station right away.
I have a good friend, bought the same truck as me at the same time. I started making biodiesel and using it, he claimed it would ruin the motor. He has had to replace the IP twice. I have run biodiesel since almost new but his truck has 25,000 more miles than mine.
Just my personal experiance and I really don't want to sound like I have a secret solution .

RE: diesel injectors

I am about to take off on a cross country trip and for the first time in 40,000 miles I will have to put diesel in my Dodge instead of B100 biodiesel. My plan is to add Marvel Mystery Oil each fill up.

RE: About To Head Out

About the no more dogs, yes I know what you all mean so I will qualify it with no more young dogs. I am at a age where a puppy would out live me and I don't want to have that dog go thru what I have rescued dogs from in the past, many months at the pound. Judy's owner died like that and she was on the list to be put down when I found her. She was the best Cattle Dog I have ever known and I am glad she had the last years with me. There I go again, my eyes tear up when I think of her, still hurts pretty bad. I still have Beau for awhile but he is not a one person dog, he likes everyone and is in his element at things like our twice a year fishing club campouts. Everyone knows him and he is your best friend if you have food. Judy on the other hand would never leave my side.
We will be leaving pretty soon but I can't for the life of me understand how you folks that up and leave for a few months do it. I keep finding things that I think need to be taken care of before heading out. The place where I was going to leave my boat fell thru so now I have to scramble to find a new place. AND, my wife and I are currently in negoations about my bringing my RC sailplane along. It has a wing span of six feet that breaks down to three feet but still a large package in a TC. There have got to be great places to soar in the desert areas where we will be hanging out on the way home. Something tells me it will stay home unless I carry it on top of the TC. I guess I could put the wings on and get some lift to help the mpg. LOL

Add 5 to 10 percent biodiesel for lubrication.

I di.d the same thing a few years ago. Made a pattern with squares of stiff paper and a hot glue gun. Cut out a second carpet but haven't needed to install it yet

RE: About To Head Out

Thanks Grant, after all the dogs over the years is still does not get any easier does it. Right now I am thinking no more dogs but I always seem to find a old Cattle Dog that needs a good home for the final years. Gets pretty expensive sometimes and now that we both are retired those med bills might be too much. Who knows, I might end up working part time telling people how to fix things in a home improvement store so I can help my old dogs.
Filled my truck today with the pump running full tilt, been a long time since I have done that. By the way, biodiesel, which is a powerful solvent will not break apart a Bounty paper towel.
Jim, who is hoping for good weather in the next month.

About To Head Out

Just a few days till we load the TC and head to MI for a Thanksgiving family reunion. My putting off doing truck and camper care all summer is rearing it's ugly head but I am getting things done.
Yesterday I got around to dropping the fuel tank to remove a paper towel that got into the inlet. Since I will be buying diesel for the trip it would have been painful to slowly put fuel in ever time we needed it. The way I put biodiesel in it was no problem.
I decided to retire my big cat heater and get a Wave 3 but am having second thoughts about its heat output. It does not impress me in our overnight temps now so I know I'll not be happy going across I80. I'll have a fully charged battery at the end of each day so running the forced air heater will be not problem but I'll have the big cat stowed somwhere just in case. Got my trusty Honda 2000 as a failsafe charger.
Not going to be a happy trip in one aspect as my Cattle Dog Judy died of kidney failure last week. She loved road trips and I'll miss having her big eyes peering from the back seat and the swipe of a paw on my arm now and then to let me know she is there. My other Cattle Dog is still with us but he is old also and does not enjoy road trips as much. I think he misses Judy as much as I do, he is pretty low key right now.
Of course my fuel pressure gauge waited till yesterday to fail so I'll have to replace that as soon as a new one gets here. Fluids change today in motor and tranny if it isn't raining. Also got around to putting a see thru port in the top of my water tank as I know we will need a good idea of how much water we have left.
We will be traveling for a month so hope the bad weather holds off but can't expect that in November. Once we leave the midwest, heading for the southwest.

RE: Headache (sick) Every Morning

I suggested it before but it bears repeating, make sure your oven pilot light is turned off. My flame can be out but gas still escapes unless you turn it one more notch.

RE: Ford Diesel Problem

Did the problem show up the first time when there was very little fuel in the tank? And had the truck sat for a long period of time nearly empty. The 6.0 common rail does not tolerate moisture in the fuel. Of course the first thing anyone did was change the fuel filter, right?

RE: Headache (sick) Every Morning

Do you have the gas supply to the pilot light in the oven turned off. It is easy to for get to turn it fullly off and gas will still escape but no flame. At least my oven works that way.
I would suggest your wife leaves the window on her side of the bed cracked a bit for some fresh air exchange. Crack the one on your side and you will get flow thru, wind helps that process so park if you can, park in a direction that exposes the window to the prevailing wind direction.

My guess is that tire got driven for quite a lot of miles with next to nothing as far as air pressure in it.

RE: The best heater ???

I would feel a lot better with a Wave over a Buddy. Been using a Wave for about 15 years, still alive.Me too, I even run it when I sleep.
Wayne
I'll admit to forgetting to open vents once or trice and sleeping all night. Not something I want to do but what can I say. On windy nights there is a lot of fresh air input from the stove vent. I leave a window cracked by my head and the bathroom vent cracked at night. The heater is on the floor by the bathroom door so the hot air rises and exits while pulling in fresh air from the bed area.
Speaking of the bathroom, anyone installed a curtin instead of the door, the door always seems to be in the way. Or is it the dogs in the way of the door.

RE: Tellico River off-road trail system to close permanantly

So how did Washington manage to cause a drought that leaves very little water to be sent to the farms. The good news is the monsoon we had two days ago brought the two main lakes that supply farm water up a foot in 24 hours.
I understand you are looking for a fight, but I never engaged your argument with regards to WA, if you read carefully or not so carefully, or frankly at all. My point is, enjoy your Chinese lettuce and watch your sport fishing go bye bye FOREVER with the MLPA process.
cya, Sunshine. ;)
I'm not looking for a fight, just trying to put some common sense into it. It is not all because of a little fish. I didn't mean Washington State, my mistake for not adding DC. The little fish arguement does not take into account that for the last three to four years we have had low water winters and the water that could go South isn't there. I can't even put a boat in on some of my favorite lakes because the ramps are high and dry. I understand where you are coming from by living in the central valley but for crying out loud, my kids don't even have water meters in Sacramento but around here we are told to cut use by 20%.
