RE: Newb issues

ok, so i called the rv dealer...Sun CIty RV in Phoenix, they are closing this location and pointed me to the main office in peoria. I explained to the tech manager the issues above, including the new battery. The first thing he said was that i should have put in 6volt batteries that 12V are crap. Then he told me i am not charging them long enough that i need to take the Cranking amps off both batteries, add them together, then divide by 6(amps) which is basically (conservative) 1100 / 6 = 183 hours to full charge my batteries. Then i asked why a brand new battery would be fully discharged with 2 days of camping on it (using only the light over the stove mind you, and occasional bathroom break at 2am) and he said he couldnt answer that but my truck probably wasnt charging the batteries. He also asked if i used the furnace, which i have not. My dad, who is up there ( at the campsite) said that he thinks the inverter/converter is bad. He said that he tried the GFI , no luck and that there is only 9 v at the battery when the genny is running...arrgghh, he also said he reset the CB's and looked at the fuses....arrgghh again...
I bought an 07 Ragen and in two months had to replace the single 12v factory battery. I think that most dealers do not cycle the gen-sets as required maintanence, and discharge the factory battery to where it goes bad and sulfides out.
I'm running two 12V parallel but next time will convert to two 6V Trogan T105 batteris.

RE: Well we decided on the Pinnacles area, it was Great !!!

You need to buy that women a better machine for those mountain trails, (something that's 4X4). That way she won't flip so easy.
You'd also like the 4X4 upgrade as you can creep up a trail instead of throttling your way up it.

I don't use Goodyear tires, so I'll use the chart Maxxis puts out for their trailer tires.
I too run Maxxis. Can you post the Maxxis chart. Thx.

RE: Will my rig do the mountains

I hear so much about chips and all kinds of things to improve engine performance that I sometimes wonder if its just me that doesn't get it when it comes to enjoying RVing and camping more than having the highest powered truck you can buy. At 70 years old I am not interested in horsepower and being the first to get to a destination. Just want to get there safe and sound and enjoy it. I have not pulled my rig in many mountains, but what I have it seems to to a good job. I would like the opinion of some folks with a comparable rig of how you think my rig will do on a trip to Southwest Colorado. I know I have a few pretty decent passes to cross on my way there and apparently a lot of folks do it on a regular basis and get by okay. I would think that I could make it fine without installing a bunch of these gadgets to get more horses and torgue. I do not have a thing against the folks that are into that sort of thing its just that it doesn't interest me. You can see my rig below. Any help or advice will be appreciated.
I have a 07 2500HD and the only thing that I intalled/added was an Allison deep transmission pan and Castrol Transynd sythetic trans fluid at the 30K mile oil change.
The only reason in adding the Allison pan is to help keep the transmission temp down and take care of the trans.
I've pulled a similar weighted trailer and on 6% grades. I just slow down when the engine and/or trans temp start climbing. Other that the Duramax diesel can handle your rig no problem.
Enjoy

RE: Charging DEAD Optina Batteries

All AGM batteries(optima) require a special charger. Take it to the local advance auto prts, and they will charge it for free!
Yeah, like everytime your AGM get run down, you must remove it and take it uptown to have a special charger charge it ! :E
Give us a break ! Or at least put a smiley behind such an absurd statement.
Not absurd at all.
He should of said that AGM batteries need a "Multistage Charger"

Both batteries are new, and hold a charge fine when totally disconnected.
I've had bad batteries right out of the box.
Like mentioned above, have the batteries load tested.

RE: Technically Challenged (electronically) Camper needs help

Our new (finally) Jayco Designer is equipped with a nice flat screen TV with a Dolby surround sound speaker system. It includes a CD/DVD player & an an-fm radio. We struggled, but managed to get the TV & CD player working (haven't tried the radio) but when attempting to watch a DVD movie the best we can do is get it playing in black & white. I've notified the dealer that I'm an idiot at such things and I assume it's just an operator problem. Anyone have any quick ideas?

RE: Honda Generator "Open Ground"

OK,
In theory, Doesn't the GFCI detect the voltage leakage/stray between the ground and neutral. It also detects voltage leakage between phases(like in a 50A@220V circuit).
If there is no earth/ground? how is this accomplished.

RE: The Value of a Pre-Trip Inspection

That definitely won't fit in mine like that, the bulkhead/divider between the batterie and generator is right in line with the vertical channel just like 2BlueHeeelers.
I guess when threads hang around for any length of time they get hijacked huh?
Now back to the OP:
CHECK YOUR SUSPENSION and order the EZ-flex before they raise the price.
It will be either 33" or 35" axle stub to axle stub. Each spacing takes a different equalizer. Dexter's online price is pretty good right now for the HD kits with the Ez-Flex
The weak point in the Lippert/Zieman chassis /Alko axle setup is the bushing and shackle links. The Dexter HD stuff is way better than the OEM stuff found on most trailers. Did this on my trailer at about 3K miles and nylon bushing were already showing heavy wear....
Hey mapguy, what month did you buy yours? I think that was the same one I was looking at but my DW like the XL3205 better.
Small world...
Early May last year.
Hey Map,
What did your FA3005 measure at 33" or 35"?

RE: Honda Generator "Open Ground"

This is the response I received from Underwriters Laboratories, after asking the question on this forum about "earth" grounding of my generator, which the manufacturer recommends in the owners manual. The responses I received from the forum indicated that hardly anyone bothers with "earth" grounding of portable generators. Remember that not following the manufacturer's recommendations will usually void the warranty of the appliance, not to mention that the RV manufacturer requires a grounded AC supply.
UL Response:
Since the generator is portable, there is no way that the manufacturer of such a device can provide earth grounding from the factory - it must be provided by the installer/end-user. It is up to the end-user to follow the instructions and use the product in a safe and proper manner. In order to avoid a shock resulting from a difference in potential, it is highly recommended that one follows the manufacturer's instructions for grounding the product.
Regarding the statement that "Most consumers, especially RV users and recreationists, are not going to bother with grounding the generators" - I can only reiterate what my folks used to tell me - "if all your friends jump off the bridge are you going to do it too?" (I figure you used to hear that one too.) Those RV users and recreationists not following the guidelines have probably been very lucky enough to not have had a mishap and not have gotten shocked. If and when they do, it will not be pleasant.
Please follow the manual's instructions packaged with the product for safe operation of the generator.

Lighting@us.ul.comI would LOVE to have Ken explain this response to the forurm in long-hand, because I for one don't get it. I have a generator that is totally floating and isolated from ground by virtue of the case it's in. I also have an RV that is likewise totally isolated from ground by virtue of the tires it sits on, with the possible exception of the leveler pads on the ground. I would love to know the path of danger because I'm really at a loss, and will no way be pounding 8' copper rods into the ground when we camp.
In the entertainment biz we commonly have to bond the truck(s) because of all the lights and sometimes questionable power from shore (been knocked on my can a few times). But this (Honda) power may as well be coming from the moon as it is totally isolated from earth ground.
Wait till you put a EMS in-line with that and you have to start playing bonding games to get the EMS to start. Ken will have a conniption fit.
I'm with ya Jeff.
Here's something else to ponder....
Will a GCFI really work in an RV that has a floating and not connected/grounded to earth.....

RE: Newbie to fivers any help appreciated

I just purchased my first fiver and I am a little worried about setting it up. I bought the toyhauler used off ebay and it will be shipped late next week. The setup is a 2008 Rage'n xtralite 3305XL pulled with a 2008 chevy 2500HD duramax and allison trany.
I have been reading alot on this site and you guys and gals are great with all your ideas. Any ideas about the rig setup or about the toyhauler itself will be helpfull since I have never towed or set up a fiver before. We are planning a four day shake down trip to Prescott in June and then we are taking it on a 6 week trip across country in july and August.
Thanks
I have an 07 2500HD and pull a Ragen FA3005 with no problems. I recommend a Valley Industries Sliding Hitch and Prodigy Brake Controller. The hitch is also easily removable from the bed with four pins. PM me if you need anything elso.
