RE: Installed WDH, scale shows no change in front axle weight

My tow vehicle is a Dodge Durango (7200) capacity with tow package. I know it has a short wheel base, so maybe this is normal. The WDH is an equalizer. Any thoughts?-Pat Note.... it is easier to transfer weight to the front axles of a vehicle with a short wheelbase compared to one with a long wheelbase. The length of the rear overhang also has an influence on the leverage factor involved.

RE: Do I need a W/D hitch?

Are all dealers nincompoops? Apparently the dealers in your neck of the woods are. Yes you would want a WDH. The Easy Lift is a good choice. An optional sway bar may be something to consider as well. Note: Towing specialist A. Thomson from Can AM sells and installs the East Lift brand WDH.

RE: Thank you everyone, we got our TV. Now to get the TT!

We are currently under negotiations to pick up a Jayco Whitehawk 31DSLB, with a tongue weight of 630lb. If you are going that big (35') be sure to use a Hensley or Propride WD connection system. Think safety and stability.

RE: What do you think about this setup? (VW sedan & 5,000lbs)

Could it also have been that the designers and engineers decided that in the interest of increasing CAFE numbers, they needed to make the car lighter, so they sacrificed weight out of the frame and body which reduced its strength and, therefore its towing capacity? Nobody at our end will likely ever know... No. The cars are better than they were years ago. If you check out the Hensley vid.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FsRXjI8W6o you can see a car towing a good size TT through extreme maneuvers. It has been said that apparently that same car went on to tow for over 100,000 klm's without any major problems.

RE: What do you think about this setup? (VW sedan & 5,000lbs)

I'm sure it helps that the Jetta has an automatic hill holder. Still, this highlights why towing this kind of weight with a Jetta is no bueno. That little clutch disc is not designed to get 8000+ pounds rolling on a hill. Same goes for a similar size automatic. You may be surprised how well these things do. One guy on the Airstream forums has been towing with a Volvo S60 with a manual. Travels all over NA towing a good size Airstream. He wrote about how well, and how long the clutch has worked with years of towing on it.

They might as well drive straight to the transmition dealer, because its not going to last long. Could be but probably not. In our case we towed the 23' with a 93 Nissan Van. 435,000klm's on the vehicle with no tranny problems. Our current TV a 10 year old Infiniti sedan. It has 220,000 klm's on it with no tranny problems.

My hat goes off to the BurbMan as well. Even though he is driving the big Burb he is willing to express his honest feelings about the other side of the coin. He is also using a Hensley. Note that the vast majority of costly Hensleys are sold to folks with SUV's and trucks, not to folks with cars. Note the Jetta in the original post is using a conventional WDH. With our car and 23' we are using a Reese WDH.

RE: What do you think about this setup? (VW sedan & 5,000lbs)

Though I doubt you'll ever see a 750 Bimmer towing, I think it's important to realize the tremendous amount of power that a modern large sedan is capable of generating. They have the pulling power and braking power that only the very best SUVs can match. So if you spot a BMW 7 Series pulling a 7000 lbs Airstream, keep in mind that he can just about dust any other truck/SUV trailer combo out there. My buddy has seen the big 7 series Bimmers towing big TT's. One of the strongest cars towing large TT's is the Ford eco boost SHO Taurus. Mr.T commented that the hightly rated Ford Eco boost F150 drives like a dog compared to the Taurus towing the same trailer. His Jaguar sedan towing his big Airstream is also a high performer as well as the Hemi Chargers, Magnums, and 300C's.

RE: What do you think about this setup? (VW sedan & 5,000lbs)

I can't help but wonder...how much do all of these "upgrades" cost? I think the money would be better spent on a more adept TV...just sayin'. We have a Can Am car/trailer similar to the Jetta/TT. The car needed a custom receiver, tranny cooler, brake controller and a set of McKesh mirrors. That's it. The cost for all of that, hardware and installation was much less than the amount noted above. Anyway, very reasonable for having the world's premier towing specialist put together our combination. The nice thing about it was that it was done right the first time which included a test drive before we got the keys back. Seven years later and all is well. No fiddling with the set up or adjustments. Just hook up and go. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/CF105/Hp2TV.jpg height=150 width=180

Note this car, a Ford Mondeo is raded to tow 4,500lbs in Europe. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/CF105/FordMondeo.jpg?t=1241890845 height=150 width=175

RE: What do you think about this setup? (VW sedan & 5,000lbs)

It all makes sense. The tow ratings are much higher on vehicles in Europe. Ironically they just use the limited "bumper pull" connection system (no WDH's). In North America we have and use the more advanced method of towing/connection system the "WDH". Take the car. Design/engineer the mechanicals that allow the use of the WDH on the car and you basically have the Jetta successfully towing the 4,500lb trailer. If you follow the concept of cars towing trailers you will see that it has been going on for 60 or 79 years. The newer cars are safer, tow better, and are reliable. Not rocket science but on this side of the pond it does involve a towing specialist to put the correct pieces together.

RE: What do you think about this setup? (VW sedan & 5,000lbs)

I think their slogan is something along the lines of "We can make anything, tow anything" Actually I believe it is "The Towing Specialist".

RE: P series tires

Our Airstream has had P / PXL tires on it for the last 25 years. No problem. A nice ride with 40lbs of pressure.

RE: Dodges are junk!

Dodge and just sold it for $28,000 --------------------------------------------------- That much for a 7 year old vehicle. You should be selling swamp land in Florida!!!

RE: P series tires

Used tires of any kind are risky. Ironicly/generally speaking P/XL or LT tires are more reliable and longer lasting than ST trailer tires. Michelin's have been proven performers and are the tire of choice.

RE: Very interesting video of the return of the smaller PU.

The small trucks dont work for me. Wife had a ranger and I looked like a giant driving it. I am only 6 ft. tall. No leg room for anyone my size and bigger. We didnt get much better milage than my full size either. Unless they are putting 4 cylinders with turbos or something, cant see any big advantage to buying a truck that wont carry anymore than a suv. Goes to show how poorly NA truck builders design pickups. I'm 6'2 and enjoy driving our midsize sedan/TV. Ryan's pics are an example of the right way to make a pick up that would work for many folks (but not all).

You should have at least the Reese dual cam system with WD.
