RE: Basement weight directly added to pin?

The simple answer is no. The load is shared between the pin and the axles. The weight added to the pin depends on the distance from the added load. If the 500 pounds is added exactly midway between the pin and axles and the trailer sits perfectly level, the load will be evenly shared between the two.

X2 on the utility lift rental. It's like having a manually operated forklift. Some call it a Genie lift (brand name).

RE: should I buy a fiver?

We have a 2003 F350 6.0 PSD 2WD DRW with 4.10 gears, Our trailer hit the scales at 14,600 lbs. We have had it for about three years and have about 10,000 miles under our belts. The truck pulls it just fine, averaging between 9-11 miles per gallon going 60 mph. The only change I made was to upgrade to disk brakes on the trailer because I didn't like the way the antiquated design drum brakes operated.

RE: Entry Step Reinforcement

Mr. Mallard,
Your steps would look great and be a lot safer with some gray anti-skid paint on them like they sell at Loews. I put some on our wooden steps and it makes them a lot easier for the dogs to climb and for me, too when I'm wearing flip-flops and the steps are wet.

RE: Self adjusting or manual adjusting brakes

For the cost of the hydraulic power pack, you can have modern (1960's era) disc brakes. The cost of the rotors and calipers is about the same as new self-adjusting drum assemblies (1920's technology).

RE: Looking for wheels.

JIMNLIN,
My trailer has 7200# axles and scales-out at about 14,600#. I am getting tired of changing tires on the side of the highway and having to repair the damage to the trailer caused by the blowouts. I will not run after dark because of this.

Looking for wheels.

If anyone has some 8-hole 16 inch wheels available that will handle 110 psi for G-rated tires, would you please send me a PM. I am thinking of upgrading. Although my trailer was delivered with "D"s, I am no longer comfortable running even "E"s. I don't want to go to "H"s if I can help it.
Thanks.

RE: Kitchen cabinets falling

Dick_B,
I don't think the cabinets are overloaded. We only carry light weight dishes for two.
Traveler II,
I hear you. We have an Air Safe hitch, air bags on the truck, EZ flex and shocks on the axles, and disk brakes. The trailer rides as smooth as it's going to.

Kitchen cabinets falling

Has anyone had to reinforce the attachment of their kitchen cabinets? Mine are not very solid and I'm afraid a long trip on our interstates might cause them to fall off the wall. If you fixed yours, how did you do it?

Onan starter?

Does anyone know what my Onan 6.5kw generator uses for a starter? Mine has always been very finicky about cranking. When I hit the starter switch, the rotor turns a few degrees and stops. It seems to be worse when the unit is hot.
Thanks,

RE: Anyone replace your electric drum brakes with hyd disc?

We had a brake issue on our Jayco back in September 2011. It has 7,200# Dexter axles. I figured I could do the disc brake mod for a few hundred dollars more than replacing the drum brakes. I hated the drum brakes and think they are very antiquated. I had to replace the new hydraulic power pack because it was leaking brake fluid from the filler caps. I wound up with Kodiak brakes, a Carlisle power pack, and a MaxBrake controller. I am very happy with the performance. I bought everything except the controller from Etrailer.com. They had no trouble exchanging the leaking power pack with a different brand.

RE: Tire air gauges

You can get a digital gauge that is self-calibrating. When you turn it on, if it reads "0", then it's in calibration.

RE: Generator surging

As I previously noted, I do keep Stabil in the gas to keep it from spoiling. The gas is fresh within the last couple of months. I excercise the generator about every two weeks for about 30 minutes at half load. It starts good. It just surges when its running. I live at sea level so I have not messed with the altitude adjustment. The exhaust does smell pretty noxious, like it's running rich, but when I look at the spark plugs, they are dry and gray.

RE: Generator Woes (generac Q-55G)

Is your generator installed in the rig? Is there a transfer switch in the system? Are you measuring for voltage with a meter? Where are you measuring? Some questions for thought.

Generator surging

The gasoline powered Onan 6.5 kw generator in my 5th wheel surges when it is running. It starts good and seems to run fine but you can hear it surging for about a minute, then it runs smooth, then it surges again, and so on. It has a fairly fresh tune-up and oil change. I keep Stabil in the gas and recently added some Seafoam to see if it helps. I have not noticed a difference. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,
