RE: water pump

If you have a hot water heater then I would think the air buble that sits on top of the H2O in that tank has been absorbed. You need to introduce air back into the HW tank. The air accomplishes 2 aims. Absorbs thermal expansion of the water as it is heated thus minimizing pressure spikes.Introduces a short delay in pump cycles as the air will provide a push on faucet opening and the pump will run a bit past faucet closure to re-compress the air pocket.

RE: what signs for bearing failure

Regular bearings will heat the hub as they fail and will be rough if spun while the wheel is lifted off the ground. NevR Lube bearings are another breed of cat. If disc brakes then the heat will be generated in the rotor by pad friction. As the bearing begins to fail the rotor goes out of vertical and runs diagonal in the caliper. When the failure is advanced the rotor will begin to make metal to metal contact with the caliper flange and the rotor will become very hot. Eventually the heat will propagate to the hub but the rotor will be first to show unusual temps. I am not as familiar with NevR Lube & drum brakes but suspect the perimeter of the drum will be the first to see high heat. We experienced 9 failures thus far till the wheel offset (-10mm) was ID'd as the cause and new wheels (0 offset) installed.

RE: Weather radios, etc

We have been using a rather old RadShack but it seems to want to drop reception of late. We will be installing a Midland WR-300 for our next trip. It runs on 12VDC so we will hock it up to the house power and it will be a rather permanent draw. Set to County Code ALL. unless we are staying a while and there is active weather events that awake us needlessly. One does need to remember to set the channel on arrival. BTW the Midland is our Bricks & Sticks unit so we have had some experience with it and now trust it. We will probably add another Midland this fall & scrap the RadShack one.

RE: Ideal Inverter Generator

...although any 3000 watt generator will have a tough time starting a 15,000 BTU AC... We run our 15k AC on our Honda 3000! without issue & significant altitude on occasion. The air filter needs to be clean for altitude. Care needs to be exercised in managing how the AC is started and run is all. We start our AC if on the genny or 20 AMP shore power (SP) with the thermostat calling for a 2° reduction runs everything on low. Then we reduce the t'stat in 2° increments, keeping the AC running in low till we get to our comfort level. Once all is at our comfort level we let the t'stat do its thing and ensure we start the genny early enough. We ran on the genny & 20 amps SP for weeks in 100°+ temps in Alabama 3 summers ago without issue just using care. Not "set n' forget" but it works for us!

RE: Pump Problem

Ok, guys thanks for the fast responses. I took the faulty fuse out and replaced it with the TV fuse. Now we can use the pump but not the TV till we buy some extra fuses to carry with us. Don't matter because we never watch TV. Anyhow, lesson learned... :-) Thanks again. At some point in the near future I would advise you to remove the sewer pump from the FW pump circuit and establish it on its own fused circuit.

RE: opinions on after market holding tank monitoring system

Our new fifth wheel has the worst gauges I have ever encountered. We do some dry camping and go to state parks where we have no sewer and need a more accurate option. I have read of Sea Level brand...is this what you would use? Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom. We upgraded to See Level II Monitors and are happy campers indeed. Our unit sports an insulated belly so that had to be dealt with. I went from fiberglass bat to 1/2" R-Max board. I did some other mods while in there. The big deal is to get the tank surface clean and roughed up a bit for the 3M adhesive to stick. I then sprayed with several layers of undercoat to ensure the sensors would stay put. Now when we go to a storm disaster recovery area we can push our tank maintenance schedule to the max and know exactly when we have to visit a dump station which may be a bit of a trip depending on the level of damage. (This is not exactly camping as we are often amongst the debris in a church or victim's yard & off grid)

RE: Water transfer pump

When I winterize I only put the pink stuff through my pump and blow down the rest with air. To accomplish this I added a 3 way valve to the pump suction and another to the discharge. If I want to add water to the tank from some sort of reservoir (gerry jug, bladder tank etc.) I would run a suction hose from the pump suction 3 way, to that and attach a discharge hose that is plumbed into the tank suction, to the pump discharge 3 way. I've placed a remote switch at the pump to control it from there if the main pump switch is on. Water will be sucked from the reservoir & discharged into the RV storage tank. It won't be fast but it will git'er done!

RE: Winegard Entertainment Select & Jack Antenna

I concur with Bill.W. I removed power to the Distribution box when I installed our Winegard SensarPro. We get plenty of OTA TV with our setup, too bad most of the programing is awful. It usually provides us a weather broadcast so we can keep tabs on that in most places & do a quick check, when the Midland alarms a watch or warning.

RE: Winegard Entertainment Select & Jack Antenna

I have a winegard satellite dome for directv, I also have a jack antenna for times I travel without my direct receiver and / or for local channels while traveling. I have a winegard ent. Select to use tv1, tv2, dvd, etc. My antenna needed replacing and in doing so, I realized the amplifier was not working so I replaced it with the one with the jack. Now, I do not know how to conect the coax cables to make everything work in sync. Any ideas?Did you not mark the original coax?

RE: Rearranging FW pump

I am looking to move my FW pump and do some silencing. It currently resides under the kitchen sink and takes up valuable space for storing pots/pans. There is a small storage next to it that is where the FW fill comes through. I am thinking of mounting the pump vertical against the wall that divides the under sink storage from the smaller area. My questions: #1 Can I mount the pump vertical?Yes Mine is (Motor is horiz., base is vert.) #2 Will that be difficult to silence? Not really, 1/2" to 1/2" NPT flex tubing from Lowe's, HD, Ace etc. #3 Is that pex tubing, and can you use worm clamps on it?Yes PEX. No, use Shark Bite or get the 1/2" PEX tools. (I got the tools.) Thank you http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz346/jamnw/Snapbucket/1A3D0FDD.jpg height=400 width=400

RE: All in one DVD player/FM Radio/Surround source

We installed this to replace our defunct Executive 1000. It is a Samsung HT-D4500 Home Theater system that includes speakers & Sub-Woofer. We gave the speakers away to my son & used the existing OEM speakers. I am currently streaming Pandora over it. It features a Blu-Ray disc, internet streaming, iPod/Aux, FM, Optical Audio in, & HDMI out. Way better than the OEM unit. We were limited to it fitting the specific slot where the Executive 1000 resided. It fit like hand in glove.

RE: Reviews: Winegard Rayzar antenna

We have a 2004 Sunseeker so whatever is on top we use now. Not sure what brand or what. I'll check tomorrow. So you're saying the antenna up top is better than the Rayzar? So who is the Rayzar for? Or the Flat Wave? Guess I need info on the entire picture. We don't stay in one place, use the rv to get from here to there and stop as we travel. Some places we get a few channels, some none, some quite a few. I turn the antenna from inside the unit and get what we can. We can do cable if it's available, not always the case. Thanks for responding though. It's help me decide. If you travel about & seek OTA TV I would install a Winegar SensarPro amplifier & signal meter. It provides additional amplification, supplies 12VDC to the rooftop head, & signal strength readout to help in peak aiming.

RE: Refrigerator vent duct fans

We used a Lowe's attic fan thermostat. It had a temperature adjustment, I mounted it to the right edge of the upper access hole. If either of the fans you used fail, we replaced our originals with Emermax magnetic bearing units. We can barely hear them inside.

RE: what temp should hub be with infared thermometer

For easy lube and standard lube the hub is the place to monitor temps. For Nev-R-Lube Dexter hubs with disc brakes I have found the place to monitor for temps is the rotor braking surface. The hub seems to stay quite cool vs the rotor when in the early stages of bearing failure. Because the inner & outer races are quite close together the angle of the disc from vertical is more extreme for a similar amount of bearing wear. This causes the disc to cant within the pad area and generate heat. Any hub temperature increase will most likely come as a result of propagation from the rotor with metal to metal contact between the disc and caliper flange coming in the later stages of failure. I have seen temps in the 375° range once this commences.

RE: Point and shoot camera recommendation.

Thanks for the responses. The two biggest problems I run into are close pictures of dirt and long landscape shots. For dirt pics, it is difficult to see differences in texture and color. Everything seems to look the same unless I get really close (within inches). For the long shots, everything flattens out and it looks like a 50m tall hill 200m away is the same size and distance as a garbage can right in front of me. I would take a close look at these 2 candidates. http://is.gd/jikPEn COOLPIX P330 http://is.gd/3dbYiB COOLPIX P7700 They both have:VRTarget finding AF3D Feature. The COOLPIX P330 has GPS. The COOLPIX P7700 has a macro feature for a focal range down to .8 inch. Based on your stated needs & methods, some hands on experience may be needed to refine the priority of your needs vs a camera's capabilities. No single camera may have all the features needed though these look promising to me.

RE: GPS Location

I am using the sticky backed disc Garmin supplies. Unfortunately I installed it a bit too far to the left. When we purchased our new dezl 760 I pried it off the dash. It came off completely & could have been reused, though I used a new one. Out takes a bit off effort & care but is no big deal.
