RE: Windshield shade/sun screen

We live in AZ also and know the sun can be extreme. We made our own sun shades, wasn't real difficult if you have the ability to sew. We used magnets to attach them to the outside windshield. We used a material called Phifertex and bought it locally in Tempe.

RE: Breakfast Sausage

This post reminded me it's time I make some more myself. Here is my recipe... I've made some into links and others just into patties. This recipe makes quite a bit but you could adjust it easily. Like the others said, keep experimenting until you find a combination of spices you like.
5 pounds Ground Pork Shoulder
1 cup Cold Beer
½ cup Dried Parsley, or 1 cup fresh
4 tsp Salt
5 minced Fresh Garlic
2-3 Tbsp Cayenne Pepper
5 Tbsp Fennel Seed
2 tsp Crushed Chili Pepper

RE: Crock pot cooking with out hook ups

Casseroles are great when you want to eat casseroles.
If you *have* to eat casseroles all the time, then it gets old.
Sometimes a guy just wants meat and potatoes, a nice tender chuck roast done low and slow with baby carrots and fingerling potatoes and onions all soaking up the juices from the meat...
Dang it now I'm hungry.
Cooking in the sun oven right now. Beef stew.

RE: Sun Oven

Around here it could take six months to get sufficient sun light to cook anything. Totally useless unless you live in the sun belt.
All you need is enough sun to cast a shadow. The box will heat up, I got it to 300 degrees on a totally overcast day here. I used it as a slow cooker that day.

RE: Sun Oven

How do you keep bugs from flying into your food? Critters?
The food sits in a sealed air tight box, there is a glass lid with a gasket that seals it. Here are a couple pics.

Sun Oven

Has anyone used a sun oven? I went to a class on one two weeks ago and of course had to buy one. I got the All American Sun Oven last week and have been cooking in it everyday. First meal was corned beef, cabbage, red potatoes and cornbread. Tonight was chicken enchiladas. I have also made bread and carrot muffins. I love it, but of course I live where the sun shines all the time. :) Plan on taking it on our next rv trip, it is about the size of a suitcase and weighs 21 lbs so hopefully we can find room to take it along.
Just wondering if anyone else is using one.

RE: Pork shoulder recipe needed ....

I use this for pork loin and it is very good, I don't see why it wouldn't work for pork shoulder.
Roasted Honey-Pepper Pork
This recipe is for a 2 1/2 lb roast so it can adjusted depending upon the size of your roast.
1/4 cup honey
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1 Tbsp crushed peppercorns
1/2 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp salt
Score roast 1/2 inch deep completely around roast. Combine all ingredients, mixing well. Spoon or brush 2/3 of honey mixture over pork to coat. Place meat on roasting rack and roast at 300 degrees for 1 hour. Brush with remaining honey mixture and roast until temperature registers 170 degrees.
For a garnish with the pork use:
Honey Cranberry Relish
Coarsely chop 1 package (12 oz) fresh or frozen cranberries and 1 medium orange in food processor or by hand. Stir in 3/4 cup honey. Bring to boil over medium-high heat and cook 3-4 minutes. Cool and serve with pork.
Edit: sorry just realized I am a day late for this! Maybe you can use it next time.

RE: cupcakes or ???

thanks...once made, how long do you think they will last? I need to make them Wed. eve and serve on Sat.
I think they would be fine, but if it was me I would probably make the cupcakes - seal them in an air tight container or ziplock bags unfrosted, and then frost them Friday night or Saturday morning. Then put them back in an airtight container until you need them. If I was making them from scratch I would definitely freeze them, but boxed mixes have plenty of preservatives in them so they will last a couple days with no problems.

RE: dehydrating

I dehydrate as well. I have an Excalibur and love it. I make jerky, dehydrate herbs, bananas, onions, and about anything else I think will work. When I make jerky I usually put it in food saver bags and then pack it for our RV trips. Makes a nice snack. I also make all my dog's treats, he gets chicken jerky and sweet potato treats.

RE: cupcakes or ???

These are different and kind of cute for a crowd, I don't have a picture but...
Neopolitan Cupcakes
1 pkg Yellow Cake
1 pkg Dark Fudge Cake Mix
1 pkg Strawberry Cake Mix
3 cans Vanilla Frosting
3 cans Chocolate frosting
3 cans Strawberry Frosting
Follow direction on each pkg for cupcakes.
Layer the flavors in lined cupcake tins. Put a small amount of each flavor until 3/4 full.
Bake as directed.
When cupcakes are cool, spoon in the three frosting flavors as neatly as possible in a pastry bag or large ziplock bag. It does't have to be perfect, they will swirled together anyway. Then pipe on cooled cupcakes, the 3 flavors will swirl together as you frost.
This makes 6 dozen cupcakes.

RE: Does Anyone Can??

I can. This last year was diced tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, tomato juice, bbq sauce, spaghetti sauce, peaches, fruit cocktail, applesauce, jelly, chicken, shredded beef, ground beef, and five different kinds of beans. Kept me busy all fall and winter!

RE: Different Bread Flours

A couple years ago I got into making my own flour so I have all sorts of wheats that use. Some think I am crazy but home milled flour makes the best bread and smells so good. Today I just make several types for the baking I plan on doing the rest of the week. I am making Kamut bread. I think Bob Red Mills makes Kamut flour so you don't have grind your own. Kamut is a large grain that when ground makes a flour that has a rich, buttery and nutty flavor. Makes very good bread. I have also used Red Wheat, Barley, Rye, and Buckwheat to name just a few. The breads are all good, just different.

RE: Dehydrated dog food

BCSnob, that was interesting. Thanks for the link, I'll spend some more time reading through it. What he says makes sense.
I have some chicken jerky in the dehydrator now for him and sweet potatoes waiting to go in next that I use for treats, so that will probably be enough dehydrated stuff. I'll probably just keep doing what I am doing, my dog seems to healthy and happy with what he is getting.
I appreciate everyone's input.

RE: Dehydrated dog food

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't think about moisture in more humid climates, I live in such a dry area everything last forever here :) We are headed to the Pacific Northwest this summer so I'll have to think about that some more. The trial size I got is just about perfect for one meal for my dog, so I might sneak some into his food and see if he likes it. Most likely he will, he seems to eat about anything. Thanks again.

Dehydrated dog food

Has anyone ever used or heard of dog food from a company called The Honest Kitchen? It is an all natural dehydrated food that you add water to. I got a sample recently that I haven't tried out on Duncan yet, but was looking at it and thinking it may be easier to store when traveling instead of a bag of kibble. I currently feed him Blue Buffalo with a little added meat, and he is doing well on that but this has me interested.
Here is a link to their web site.

RE: attaching Sun Screens to your RV

Now that we got past Nov./Dec. I can get back to work. I like the Magnet idea, does anyone know where to buy some sun shade fabric to build my next project ?
Thanks for any and all help...
I bought our fabric at Tempe Sales, it is on Broadway just west of Mill in Tempe. The fabric is called Phifertex. Since you are in Queen Creek you may try Mesa Sales as well, they are on Main St east of Gilbert Rd. Both of them probably have it, but If you don't have any luck with either one of them I have purchased it on line at a company called Sailrite. Also, we bought the rare earth magnets on line from a place called csm magnetics.

RE: Ready Brute Tow Bars, help

Another vote for the ReadyBrute. We use the ReadyBrake in conjunction with the Blue Ox tow bar since we already had it. Have towed it over 7000 miles with no issues. I've used it with a Jeep Liberty and a Jeep Wrangler. Both vehicles are set up with the emergency brake away.
You can use readybrake surge brakes with a blueox tow bar? Any mods you have to make or just buy it? I am sooooo sorry I went with the BB what a pita to put in and take out!
Yes, we have a Blue Ox Aventa II tow bar, it will attach right to the Ready Brake with no modifications. This is what we bought to use with our tow bar. http://www.readybrake.com/brake-systems.html. I also bought their additional emergency breakaway switch. If you are handy, you can install it yourself. The set up is very easy.
I agree the BB was a PITA to take in and out and it didn't fit well in our Liberty.
