Question abt metal studs ect?

I just read and re-read the thread on "Winnebago Quality".
Pretty much decided on a used Winnebago Aspect or Access or another model with low miles.
Which Class C RVs have metal wall studs and joists? I fig that is very important.
As another poster said....how it was maintained is more important. Kinda like Airplanes.

RE: Are these weight distributions correct?

SCDR,
Not much in selection up here so far.
Thanks for the correct models to search for. We'll see.
LMC and classic parts dot com web sites say they have them. Hellwig doesn't.
Well I pulled a 15' all metal trailer including a metal deck(2k+), 873G bobcat(abt 7400 lbs) , backhoe & auger attachments and two buckets. Plus all my tools and gear and the pups and the wife..'cept the wife only weighed 115-lbs ha!
Oh,....at one point we had rescued 7-pups. One a 155-lb Newfy/German Shepard Mix. Pretty Close yeah?
RickSounds like you're talking about 15,000 total combined (truck and trailer together) weight, rather than a 15,000 lb trailer by itself. 15K trailer + truck would be over 20K combined. 15K total combined is certainly do-able with a 454/4.10.
Oh you of little Faith.
I am telling you I pulled 15K trailer with the truck. Dozens and dozens of time during the construction season up here.
Savvy?

RE: Are these weight distributions correct?

Thanks for the ideas.
Yeah I have converted it to a dually. 1988 GCM CC 1-ton 4WD 454-CI TBI.
I can't install a hitch less I get that expensive super hitch. I m ight cld add two turn buckle restraints to reg hitch. But,..the extensin needs to be ard 5'.
Other prob is it's leaning too much on 90-deg turns. I need a rear sway bar and can't find one.
About decided the camper is a little more then the truck can handle. I may have to sell it and get a TT. It'll tow 15k no problem.

RE: Got 'er done but......errrrr.......!!!!!!!!

The load sits fine it just ways too much when I turn. Doesn't sway in the straight.
I'm gonna take it to a place Mon and see if they can find a sway bar that will fit. If I can get done it may solve the issue. If not, then maybe the airbags.
Thanks Again for all the comments and ideas.

Are these weight distributions correct?

Truck W/O Camper & with 1-1/4 tanks of gas. Two Tanks @ 20-Gal each
Front 3860 % = 56%
Rear 2980 % = 44%
Total = 6840-lbs
===============
Truck with Camper:
Front 3680 % = 36%
Rear 6540 % = 64%
Total = 10,220-lbs

RE: Got 'er done but......errrrr.......!!!!!!!!

Ya know...that truck has served me super over the years but when I look at that huge camper on it I just have 2nd thghts about it handling it.
It's sort of an instinct feeling. Savvy?
it accelerates fine and cruises at 65 just fine.
I haven't taken it on a trip yet.
I do know I enjoyed using a Class C.
For some reason, I don't yet have confidence in the rig.

RE: Got 'er done but......errrrr.......!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the accolades. Yep...plenty of work for sure.
It sits just slightly up with the new springs on the rear. Not squatting. They added two steel spacers on each rear spring pack along with an extra leaf each side.
Rancho doesn't make a an adjustable shock for the rear. Just the front. I had the heavy duty Monroe put on the rear. Rancho on the front.
I ordered the Helwig sway bar that they recommended. It didn't fit. Sent it back.
I'll just have to go slower when I turn and will look for a rear sway bar. I'll check at Roadmaster.
Fish on Ha!.
Thanks for the tips all.

Got 'er done but......errrrr.......!!!!!!!!

Whelp friends and neighbors I got the SRW switched over to a dually. Lots of work and time. Mostly dealing with parts folk who don't know Jack abt parts for a 1988 GMC Sierra Classic 1-ton 4WD 3500 HD truck. Reason being is the body is the old style like the '87 and prior.
Anyways, added one new leaf each side, new Rancho adj shocks and Monroe HD on the rear plus a new steering shock. That steering shock made a lot of diff in handling and smooth steering.
Put the dually hub on the front and the Aerocraft adapters on the rear. No probs so far.
The camper weighs 4k if loaded with all gear.
Did a total tune up.
Oh...added 7 new Michelin 215/85R16 tires and dually wheels.
Welded up a front receiver and welded that to the very end of the frame rails. See pic.
I cldn't find any dually fenders here. So....I remembered that UMHW material we use on our dog sled runners. I tested various thicknesses and found 1/8" wld bend to the contour of the rear wheel well and it's tuff as nails. Cut it out and screwed it to the wheel wells with
self drilling screws and some large fender washers and it seems to be perfect. Cost to order some after market fenders was $900 plus. My do-it-myself cost.....$35. ha!.
No probs cruising or acceleration with the 454-CI but.....when I make a 90-deg turn it leans way way too much for me.
Whats the best solution for that leaning problem. My first instinct is to add airbags but lots of folk here don't like 'em or wish they had not installed them.
Bewitched, bothered and mosquito bitten in Ak. Ha!.

Spring loaded tie-down adjusment

I got 2 diff answers from a RV place.
These are the chrome metal tube turn buckle type tie downs.
One was;
1. Turn them till they are extended 1/4" inch.
the other was;
2. Turn my hand till tight. (I can get them dang tight with my scuba neoprene gloves). Then 2 more complete turns.
What say youse guys?

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Fitted up a receiver and welded it. Then welded that to the front frame members.
I welded up a 2 x 4 steel carrier and repainted it last night in the garage. Got done at 3-am.

Plugs. Question?

I'll send a pic after I'm satisfied the truck and camper are skookum.
I just inspected the rear diff. Tightened it up some.
I decided to replace the plugs.
The Autolite OEMs work fine.
I was told the Platinum or dble Platinum burn hotter and provide a hotter longer burn in the cylinder.
I took one out and it is indeed the Autolite AP24 Platinum.
What do you guys rec.
I can install the OEMs.
I can install new Platinums as are in there now.

RE: Advice abt bed material and the cabover

I would use the mining belt. Contrary to popular belief, the tie downs job is to restrict the TC from moving while under way, not to keep the wind from blowing it out of the bed of the truck. The slicker the bed surface the more work for the tie downs and greater strain on their mounts. The rubber provides a grip surface. I really would not be concerned with the water not draining, it will.
Wayne
Thanks Wayne.
I wasn't sure if placing it on top of the existing bed liner was the best idee or not. I'll take off the existing liner and use the rubber belt by itself.

RE: Advice abt bed material and the cabover

Thanks for the responses.
Hadn't thght abt putting the mining belt over the existing bed liner.
I stink it will be more stable with the matt layin on the bed itself. Downside is. it won't drain water as well.

Advice abt bed material and the cabover

I search the archives a lot.
I saw most recommend a rubber bed bottom for the cabover.
My truck has a realy great liner that is impervious and durable.
Shld I use the one from my-ex that was a rubber belt from a mine in WVa
Or use the one already installed.
My inclination is put the rubber one in the bed.

Good companies

I wanted to follow up on my truck conversion.
If you rem, both Hellwig and Rancho gave me the spec'd products they make for my truck.
Hellwig sway bar did not fit.
Only two of the 8-shocks rec by Rancho would work w/o mods to the truck.
Both companies have now paid me for the total back shipping costs I incurred.
I highly recommend both of them.
