RE: Avoid Walmart I10 Exit 34 Gulfport, MS

I don't consider 2am overnight. How did they know you were not inside Walmart shopping?

RE: Quick and Easy meals while at the race track

With only 40-50 minutes to eat and transfer your pics (and get off your feet), I think I would reheat leftovers for lunch, or have homemade sandwich and salad. Then make spaghetti, or grill your dinner, and make enough to reheat the next day for lunch. Grilled meats and veggies can be reheated in a covered skillet on the stovetop, so can pizza. If you have leftover steak or chicken you can make some great nachos in a skillet.

RE: Have you seen this?

I did a search for this grill in rv.net, and this is the only thread that came up.
Has anyone gotten one of these since April 2012?
I was really thinking about getting one, but I'm another that thought each of the areas was too small. 20oz fryer? My Fry Daddy holds 32oz of oil, and sometimes that is too small. Especially for frying shrimp for the family.

RE: Splendide Laundry Detergent??

I use Splendide. I dump it into a plastic canister that came with chocolate caramels from Costco.
Why no Pods? I was seriously considering changing to this method because it seems so convenient. I was still going to add a little Downy.
@Country Sunflower: I like the ketchup bottle idea for the Downy.
I went months w/o using the washer/dryer. Not much camping, and then only at state parks without sewer. Then we took a trip where I used it several times. After we got back I realized I was putting detergent into the wrong compartment. It was ok, I was putting it into the first and not the second. I need to put that little white gadget back into the first one so I don't forget again. I don't use bleach often.

Fasta Pasta?

I saw this on microwaveconnect.com. I mentioned it to a friend who said she uses one at home. The instructions say not to cook with the lid on. Before ordering another expensive single-duty gadget I thought I would see if I can cook spaghetti in the microwave with something I already have.
My silicone bread pan came to mind. I broke the ends off spaghetti so it fit into the pan. 2oz dry pasta makes about 1 serving for DH (too many carbs for me). I weighed the pasta after breaking. Add 2 cups of water and a little salt. I microwaved for about 14 minutes. Drain and serve.
I did try cooking the spaghetti without shortening it, and it did not work. While the silicone pan did go back into shape as the pasta softened, the ends were undercooked.
I hate cooking spaghetti. I hate the big pot of water, I hate forcing down the dried pasta so that it is completely covered with water, I hate draining the big pot, and I really hate washing the big pot. This micro method will be something I use at home as well as on the road.

RE: Newbie considering a Travel Trailer

Why storage?
Park trailer at camp site, drop off wife and kids. Let them set up camp while you go get jet skis.

RE: Shower Skylight - Benefit or Worthless?

When we replaced the roof we left the bathroom skylight off. If we were taller and needed just a little more head room for a comfortable shower we would have put it back. We had already replaced the outer layer once, and we credit a new crack (from low limbs) for needing the new roof.

RE: Washer / Dryer combo - Do you have /use ?

The only thing I miss about not having a gas oven is using it to make toast. So I grill toast in a skillet. If we were fulltimers I would add a toaster or toaster oven.

Have it/use it. (Splendide)
We've had it about a year. Love it!
RV'd for 6.5 years before getting it. Can't be without it now.

I like the sheepskin with a rubber backing applied. Then I can remove it from my rv seat and use it in my lawn chair to keep my backside warm.

RE: Most useless "feature"?

I used to think a Splendide combo washer/dryer was ridiculous. DH thought it would make a good addition. The more he talked about it the better it sounded. Now that we have one I can't imagine not having it. We seldom use it camping at a state park, but it's awesome to have on a long road trip when we get to a site with full hook ups. I can wash several loads while we are parked, skipping the dry cycle, and do the drying while we are on the road.

RE: Yellowstone - West or South entrance?

There are a couple of nice parks on the west side, just outside the park. We stayed at Buffalo Crossing in July.

RE: Ideas for accessing Splendide for repairs

We have a 2003 Endeavor. Our Splendide was installed last June. A particularly rough downhill ride in July made it shift in the cabinet. The dryer hose came loose and lint went everywhere before we realized there was a problem. Inside the adjacent closet is a removable panel but even with that removed there was no access so we cut a a couple of tall holes between the studs. It was still awkward but I managed to get the hose reconnected. The panel covers the holes.
Before resorting to cutting DH brought in a piece of wood and a cinder block so we could slide it out and it could sit there while we tried to reach the back. The dresser was more in the way than the bed. We got it out several inches but it was not enough, and I could not squeeze my arms over the top far enough to reach the hose.
If it needs more work than we can reach we will have to take it let somebody else get the machine out.

RE: Tortilla Soup - from PPL Newsletter?

I have not heard from them. But I think it started with broth and salsa. Then cooked chicken, black beans, and corn.
I have an easy recipe from a friend. She uses a crockpot but I've made it on the stove twice. We like it. Last time I added raw shrimp and let it cook in the soup, rather than chicken. I also adjust other ingredients for more flavor/spice, and with it without beans and corn. But the base is Lime and Green Chili chic broth, Rotel, taco seasoning, cilantro, chicken. The full recipe may be on the HEB website since the broth is their store brand. Doing it in the crockpot you put raw chicken in. Doing it on the stove I seasoned and pan grilled the chicken before chopping and adding it because I really dont like the texture of boiled chicken. It's not the longer version that we love, but it is very tasty. The shrimp version was AWESOME.
I still want to try that super easy one PPL had in the newsletter. I will post it when I find it.

RE: Dinner Plates and Bowls

Brand name for those double layer insulated plastic drinking glasses - Tervis.
There are cheapie versions but I love Tervis since they are a USA product and have a lifetime guarantee. If they break or whatever, you just print out a form online and mail them back to the factory in Florida. In a couple of weeks, your replacement arrives in the mail.
Like them because in hot humid weather, the ice in your drink stays colder longer and they don't leave sweat rings on the counter. They also make mugs we use for coffee. A lot of places sell them but I know Bed Bath & Beyond carries.
(I don't own the company. Unfortunately. Just a satisfied consumer.)
We love our Tervis too. This summer I wanted a great souvenir from Yellowstone to keep in the RV. Because I did not find anything, I ordered a 12oz Tervis with a bear on it and had the back side personalized with "Yellowstone 2012".

RE: Dinner Plates and Bowls

When we are going the paper route, we use a lot of the paper french fry boats. They are very convenient for snacks, salads, and of course French fries.
It's usually just DH and myself, but if there are more than 4 of us we use paper unless we need to cut meat on our plates. All other times we use Corelle. A lot depends on if we have a sewer hookup. Too much dish washing fills a gray tank quickly.

RE: Kitchen Equipment/Utensils?

I have a grill pan in the RV, with ridges in the bottom. I did not have a press that fit it, so I got a couple of bricks and wrapped them in heavy foil to press burgers, chicken, and sometimes bacon. I keep a 2nd layer of lighter weight foil around them, and that thin layer gets peeled off, thrown away, and replaced after use.
