It will not hurt the 5er, but some hitch manufacturers say not to do it.

I look at things like this every once in a while, but then decide that I can buy an awful lot of fuel for what I am going to spend to increase mpg a mile or 2. I was just figureing that if you are getting 14 mpg and this would increase mpg by 2, to 16, then, assuming a cost of about 2k+(possibly more if you have to pay labor to install) then your break even point would be around 70,000 miles at todays fuel prices. This is just some quick figureing. If someone thinks I'm wrong, just post the corrected figures and don't blast me too bad-I'll just graciously admit my mistake. Gary Also, if most of your miles are towing (like me), you probably would seldom be in 6th gear, as it is a 2nd OD.

RE: Batteries

If you have had no battery issues since 2007, why go to the extra cost of installing 4 6volt batteries (cost of 4 batteries, extra and possibly larger cables, new battery box)? If you don't dry camp, just replace with what it came with. Newer rigs have a dedicated battery bank and inverter for the fridge.

i load up and drive down 12% grades at 40,000# i drive thru Brooklyn, Staten Island, and places that would make most people puke to drive there just in their car. heck, my 3/4 ton pickup has pulled the same trailer from new jersey to California weighing 36,000.Is that all? Heck, I drive one million pounds and on the surface of Mars with my wife's VW. Oh, and I did a summer trip to the sun and back - it was really hot. That's 93,000,000 miles EACH WAY. Makes me wonder why such a towing expert would ask for advise from a bunch of dummies towing 5th wheel trailers with just little pick up trucks?

Hell maybe its me expecting it to be more stable. When I think about the pure physics of the situation, it kind of makes sense. We have a loft when my kids are playing up there, its pretty high and that moment seems to translate into more jiggle than I expected. Wish there was a way to "lock" the suspension when parked. The best way to make the rig stable is also the most expensive- a Level Up 6 point leveling system. It lifts the rig off the suspension, making it as stable as possible (you can use it to change tires). I know this because I had it installed on my Cedar Creek 30LSA.

Besides being a bad idea to leave your brakes energized for long periods of time, standard drum trailer brakes require wheel rotation to engage. They will not work as a parking brake !!

"what ever floats your boat" It appears as though the manufacturers are not settled on this issue or they would provide advise. The manufacturer did provide advise, if you read all the posts you will see the maintenance instructions.

During all my years of farming hyd. cylinders extended was a problem. Many times they would set extended for 5-6 months, The shafts would get pits, and finally they would get bad enough the seal would be cut and cylinders leaked oil. There are products that can be sprayed on the shafts that will dry and not collect dirt. Some people use plain grease, but dirt will collect, and it will be a big clean up job when you are ready to go. Leaving them down is fine just protect the shaft itself. This is why the manufacturer said to use Silicon Spray

Do you carry your laptop in an upright position as well? As long as it isn't a plasma TV, you're ok to lay them down on the bed. The Danger of Laying Large LCD TVs Flat Large LCD TVs are designed so their weight is balanced when the set is upright, as it is when mounted to a wall. When a large LCD set is laid flat, there is very little support for the middle part of the screen. It is possible that the screen could become cracked or distorted around the edges if it lays static for a prolonged period of time. All of the newer rigs I've been in (mine included) have flat screen T.V.'s wall mounted, some with pull out brackets. The plywood attached to the wall will be more than adequate to mount the bracket.

Here's a question I don't think was addressed regarding safety of "cheater boxes": Since the box will only work in a plug without GFI, and since the purpose of GFI is to protect your rig, it seems that the cheater box may be inviting potential trouble. MY QUESTION: would the potential risk be eliminated or reduced if our rig is equipped with a wired-in Energy Management System? The purpose of the system is to shut down the incoming current when it detects TOO HIGH or TOO LOW amperage. From the Level up manual- PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES 1. Change fluid in RESERVOIR ONLY every 36 months. a) Check fluid only when jacks are fully retracted. b) Always fill the reservoir with the jacks in the fully retracted position. Filling reservoir when jacks are extended will cause reservoir to overflow into its compartment when jacks are retracted. c) When checking fluid level, fluid should be within ¼” of fill spout lip. 2. Check the fluid level every month. 3. Inspect and clean all Pump Unit electrical connections every 12 months. If corrosion is evident, spray unit with WD-40 or equivalent 4. Remove dirt and road debris from jacks as needed. 5. If jacks are down for extended periods, it is recommended to spray exposed leveling jack rods with a silicone lubricant every seven days for protection. If your coach is located in a salty environment, it is recommended to spray the rods every 2 to 3 days.

120 plus 120 only creates 240 if one if the phase is 180 degrees between the two. The 240 feeding a home is "split phase" at 180 degrees that allows 120vac phase to neutral for each line (l1/l2). If you don't know much about electricity, my advice is don't mess with it because you will either violate ohms law which causes smoke/damage or be killed. I don't think you can "violate" Mr. Ohms' law. But not knowing what you are doing can cause damage/injury/death.

Well I give up on this thing. I have 120 volts at the main breaker, I have 12.9 volts going out of the converter and battery connected I have the same at the battery but the converter still won’t charge. I unplugged the shore power went inside and turned the sealing lights on they worked went plugged shore power back on and lights as suggested they didn’t get any brighter and converter did not charge. I don’t believe is a fuse in the wire between the converter and battery, if there is one It’s under the floor and to top it all off the nearest dealer is 220 km away. Thanks everyone for your help. Did you disconnect the battery as suggested and run on the converter by itself? A bad battery will cause low converter voltage.

When it gets below 13.2 I just turned my heater on or the AC fan and the converter starts to charge. The battery dropped to 12.9 over night. The only common element here is the AC panel. It is remotely possible that a loose connection between the AC bus and the breaker for the converter could be effected by drawing more current through the bus (turning on a heater). But it is more likely the converter is bad. As stated before, disconnect the negetive battery cable AT the battery, plug in the rig and see if all your DC lights etc. work. If they do, replace the battery, if they don't, replace the converter.

I would buy an auto slider so no matter what FW you pull (I had to rescue one after TV breakdown) there will be no problems. My Brother had a manual slider and never used it, a friend was piloting his rig and hit the cab (minimal damage) on a turn made other times with no trouble.

I see that there are some experts on here stating that it is code to install #6 wire for 50a load. Please provide the NEC table you referenced for your opinion... . http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff208/MiPilot/RV/NEC310-15.jpg Not trying to be an A$$ just hate to see someone spend extra that isn't needed. Credentials = 28 years in the electrical trade. Master electrician by the age of 24 and a contractor for the past 14 years. #8 AWG is OK to use if you have the correct conductor temperature rating. Saving money is always good, but if someone does not have this info, bigger is better. Most people look at their 50 amp cord and see it is #6 AWG and use that size to wire their plug.
