RE: High mileage? It's ok

My 1996 has 330,000 miles. I would take it across the country in a heartbeat. 1997 and 200,000 miles. Heck yeah! 1996 and 231,000 miles. Heck yeah! This June it pulls the 5th wheel on a 3,000 mile trek through the desert southwest. With a DW, 2 DD's, a cat and a rabbit on board.

RE: Here's a pretty clever picnic table ilumination idea......

Very nice idea. I may well make one of these. Some people think they have to use 500 Watt halogens to eat a hot dog.I put "scare lights" in the same category.

RE: Took the wife to her first RV show.

I admire you not wanting additional debt. I recommend that you think about what you really want (one of the best aspects of my 5th wheel is the inside head in the middle of the night) and go find a nice used one. When you retire, you will have a much better idea of the features to spend your hard earned $ on when you buy new. FYI, my advice is worth what you paid for it! My rig is not new, '03 trailer and '96 truck, but they are paid for. However, when I retire it will be brand new for traveling this great land! Only 6-9 years to go...

RE: Yamaha ef2000iS pair vs Honda EU2000iS

I have the Yamaha EF3000iSEB. Yes, the bigger brother. I really like the fuel petcock. I always run the carb dry and have not had problem 1 in the 7 or so years I have owned it. However, I am sure the red ones are very well made too. But the petcock, 500 watt boost for 10 sec and built in wheels sold me.

We keep a separate container at the side of the stool. It gets emptied every day.

RE: New tires for 2002 34 ft Cameo

We need some more information to be helpful. What are your axles rated for?Does the OEM sticker specify LT or ST tires, are your current tires the original size?Have you ever weighed your trailer?

RE: Just some questions on the 16 inch tire upgrade

I upgraded from 15" ST to 16" Michelin LTX M/S2. With the ST tires, I had 4 failures in the first 2 years. I switched to the Michelin's 7 years ago and have not had a single problem. Worth every dollar. I do have Michelin XPS RIBs on the truck.

RE: 15" to 16" conversion

Voice of experience here. I also started with off brand Chinese ST225/75R15 LRD. 2 failures in the first year. Changed to Carlisle ST225/75R LRE tires, and I again experienced 2 failures in the next year. Then I got smart... I upgraded to Michelin LT225/75R16 LRE. That was 6 years ago. Not one single problem after that. Others have already addressed size (1 inch more diameter which is 1/2 inch radius) and increase in rated load (ST LRD @ 2540 lbs, and the LT LRE @ 2680 lbs). FYI: the testing for LT tires is much more rigorous than for ST tires, so this just makes things better still. Enjoy!

RE: China bombs away!

Pony up the bucks and go 16", LT, E load range. It worked great for me. 6+ years without a problem.

RE: generators

My Yamaha 3000iseb runs my 15,000 BTU air conditioner just fine. I must turn the A/C off to run the microwave. It is not a big deal. My top advantages of a 3000 vs. 4000 watt generator are: 1) lower up front cost 2) lower fuel consumption 3) lower weight

RE: Michelin

Is the XPS RIB tire recommended for my 2500HD Silverado? I don't think Ribs are recommended for a steer-axle. You could go to TireRack.com and see what they say about it. Manufacturer's web sites may be just a BIT biased. I have XPS RIBs on my F-350 and they are fine. Michelin customer service highly recommended them for a pickup running near GVWR and staying on pavement. I cannot tell the difference in ride quality from my previous LTX Michelin's.

RE: ST225/75R15-D Tire on new fiver

My trailer also came with ST225/75R15-D tires. I had 4 failures in 2 years. (2 failures on D load range, and another 2 on ST 15 inch E LR.) Changed to Michelin LT225/75R16-E 6 years ago. Not a single problem in those 6 years. Cheap? No Worth it? Absolutely

RE: Another way to get the hitch in & out.....

I used to use a block and tackle from a ceiling joist in the garage. It worked good, but the hitch was a bit low relative to my head. I just mounted a winch and pulley system mounted in the garage. It works GREAT. Just put the truck in its spot, hoist the hitch up high - I'm good.

RE: 16'' tires

All I pointed out was the vast load capacity difference between two tires of the same size from different designs. Mr. FastEagle, you are correct, the rated capacities as certified by the DOT are very different for the same size ST and LT tire, the ST normally being rated higher. During my research I found that the DOT has different criteria for certification of and ST and LT tires. The ST tire criterion is essentially a subset of the more rigorous LT testing criteria. After reading and studying the two certification plans, I found it reasonable that a LT tire would have a lower rated maximum load than an ST tire. Here is the link to my research that I posted back in ‘09 here on RV.net. U.S. Federal Testing Standards for ST and LT Tires I do understand that ST tires have additional UV inhibitors added, and other trailer tire specific design aspects. However, after talking with Michelin I found that a LT tire was often (not always) an excellent replacement for a ST tire. (Assuming that load ratings, etc. are not exceeded, the tire is put in service within manufacture specifications, and the tire meets trailer axle requirements, etc.) Therefore, I switched to LT tires on my 11k lb 5th wheel. Originally I had 4 failures with ST designs in the first 2 years of ownership, and zero failures with the LT design in the subsequent 6 years. I also understand that this single data set of my experience does not a statistical analysis make, but it has apparently solved my problem with tires. Thank you for helping us keep focused on facts, not conjecture or personal preference.

RE: Different Ways to use an RV

Hurricane evacuations are the most critical. Rita (2005) and Ike (2008) so far. Hopefully no hurricanes this year! Also, our own digs when volunteering for work weekends at church camp.

RE: Generator Question

I live in the south, where it is hot and humid 6 months of the year. A/C is mandatory if you actually want to sleep. I have never had a problem at Wal-Mart running the generator. I have a 3kw Yamaha, weighs in at about 160 lb, sits in the front of the pickup bed, and is locked to the truck with a cable for good measure. My head is only a few feet away from it (front bedroom 5th wheel) and it is no louder than the A/C unit inside the trailer. I park with the generator downwind of the rig and have two CO detectors. Redundancy is a good thing.
