RE: 2 1/2 hours PC shopping.......

Creeper, How can you group all the laprops into one group? They all have a different purpose. In my house, I have 3 desktop PC's, that I built myself, on a network. Plus a Acer Apire-One netbook, that works very well on the wireless router. We use it at all the campgrounds, and log on to the internet. I wouldn't want to use a netbook for any long period of time, but for $300 bucks, it's a bargin! Vintage Cars,,, 55 Nomad, Ps, Pb, Air , ps all FACTORY ORIGINAL with the 265 v8... So what is your point? I know some people use laptops for their main home computer, but even the 17" screen is to small for me(IMO). In the living room, I have a 50" Panasonic plasma, that doubles as a computer monitor(typing on it now), and in my den, a Samsung 24" monitor, both are a pleasure on the eyes. A laptop is a waste of money, unless you need the mobility, and even then, can't really be updated. It's a vicious cycle with laptops, having to be replaced every 3 years or so, where as a desktop, can be updated, by replacing video cards, ram, for a fraction of the cost. Saying that, you could easily get 5>6 years, for the fraction of the cost of one higher end PC or Mac laptop! Once again, IMO A three year refresh cycle may be the norm in a business environment to coincide with the three year warranty that is also the norm on business laptops, but for personal use it is absurd. My last laptop is over ten years old now, running W2K and is still functioning as my main email and general surfing PC on my desk. I only got a new laptop last year after the last battery pack for the old laptop died and the cost of replacing it was too close to the cost of a new laptop, so the old is just a dedicated silent desktop now. wp6529, "My last laptop is over ten years old now, running W2K". You are kidding? You are using this for a very slow and primitive experience, even if you have broadband! No multimedia, or video, why not use an 8 mhz 8086 IBM instead, what's your point? I like vintage cars, but wouldn't want to drive one everyday, without the modern amenities, like a/c, power steering, etc! I think most people try to keep up with technology, if they can afford it. dfb, Can you tell me what you were trying to say in your last post?

RE: Tires for 2004 GMC 2500 HD ?

Thanks Trapper, and SingleAction for your feedback. I looked up the Bridgestones your using @ Tirerack and people really like them. But I thought Bridgestone was made by Firestone? You are right! But Bridgestone owns Firestone now. The link didn't work, so I'll try this: Who We Are About Bridgestone Americas, Inc. Bridgestone Americas’ corporate family (BSA) traces its roots to the establishment of The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in August 1900. It was then that 31-year-old Harvey S. Firestone (1868-1938) started tire production with 12 employees in Akron, Ohio. On the other side of the globe in 1931, Shojiro Ishibashi (1885-1976) created Bridgestone Tire Company Ltd. (later renamed Bridgestone Corporation). He fashioned the company name by reversing the English translation of his own: “Ishibashi,” which literally means “stone bridge” in Japanese. Bridgestone Corporation purchased Firestone in 1988 for $2.6 billion, transforming the companies’ combined operations into the world’s largest tire and rubber company. The operations in the Americas were renamed Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. (BFS) and became the largest subsidiary of Bridgestone. As part of its integration with Bridgestone’s existing U.S. operations, Bridgestone/Firestone moved its headquarters from Akron to Nashville in 1992. In an effort to enhance its core business units and to address its customers’ needs and wants, the company today does business in the Americas under a holding company structure in which Bridgestone Americas, Inc. (BSAM) owns several operating units and subsidiaries. It seems that the Firestone that I remember (put into Google Firestone 500) doesn't exist anymore.

RE: Tires for 2004 GMC 2500 HD ?

I have the Chevy version of your truck, with Bridgestone Revo's load range E, LT265/75Rx16. Next spring it's time to replace them, and the same is going back on the truck! These tires have gone thru hell and back, without failure, for over 40,000 miles. The only complaint I have, as they wear, they have lots of road noise. As far as Unibubbles, that's what they called them in the late 70's & 80's, when I was a manager for a Goodyear, Michelin tire dealer. I don't know how they are now, but I wouldn't have Firestone, UniRoyal,or Michelin, on my truck! IMO

RE: Check valve on city water input?

Thanks for all the responds. Can someone tell me where this check valve is? It sounds, like it is part of the city water hose connection. Do you replace the whole unit from the outside?

Check valve on city water input?

I have a 2000 Lance 835. When I'm not hooked to campsite city water, I have to screw the white plastic stopper into the brass fitting, other wise, when I use the pump to pressure the system water comes out of the city connector. I tried a fitting with a on/of valve, but the pressure works it's way past the valve, and leaks. My question is: Is there a check valve in line that only allows the water in from the campground water, but when on the road, stops the water from coming out when using the fresh water, and the pump? Is there such a device, and what does it look like, and I assume, it has to inline from the city spigot, and ? I wanted to use a garden hose quick release adapter, so I didn't have to use a channel lock pliers every time I hook up, but all my frash water gets pumped out, and the pump never stops running.

RE: tire ??? toyo vs hankook

some have had really good luck with them. Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the Hankook tires, but I think it was more the people that installed them, and not knowing how to balance them properly! Because you had a bad experience, don't tell everyone to jump ship on the Hankook's! Funny how they knew how to balance my previous several sets of tires over the years as well as the new Toyo's. Are you saying Hankooks require a different technique? As far as telling everyone to jump ship... perhaps you missed the last sentence of my post. Thank you Like you said "I later googled this tire and found I was not the only person with problems like this although some have had really good luck with them." That what I was trying to say about the Rancho's! I have them on my 1997 Jeep Wrangler, and they are great!, but both my dw,and self, hated the ride on the truck, and believe it or not, put the stock new oem, back on the truck, and it is perfect! Go figure?

RE: tire ??? toyo vs hankook

All I can say is DO NOT GET HANKOOKS! Some may have had good luck with them but I had a TERRIBLE time with them. I sold my TOYO's as I needed a tire that would carry more so they turned me on to the HANKOOKS. They were a bunch cheaper than going with a larger new TOYO and a lot of big rigs run them so I went for it. They tried unsuccessfully for 3 months to get my truck to stop shaking. The tires were rebalanced twice and then force balanced. Then they tried swapping one out. After everything failed they said in the 700 miles I had put on the tires over 3/32 tread was gone so I would not get a full refund. While I did end up getting a full refund I had to ask myself.... 3\32 in 700 miles? After all that they gave up, and I got the bigger TOYO's. Geez what a difference. I later googled this tire and found I was not the only person with problems like this although some have had really good luck with them. Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the Hankook tires, but I think it was more the people that installed them, and not knowing how to balance them properly! I've had very good luck with Hankook tires, and they are a bargin! I can also say, that in the 80's to mid 90's, I was a store retail manager for Goodyear(Badyear), and Michelin tires! BTW, There are some on this site, that have hi praise for the BIB! Indeed, they did invent the radial tire, that came on the euro high performance cars of the 60's, 70,s and 80's, but had a reputation for the worse sidewalls, in the industry! I had people with euro luxury cars, screaming that thier tires blew out, and almost killed them! The reason was, impact breaks to the sidewalls, common knowledge to the American auto industry, along with Firestone 500's, and later 721's. (also belt shift) This is one of the reasons, they did away with road hazards! To this day, I wouldn't touch a Michelin tire with a 10 ft pole, but that's me. Some trucks/cars, have alignment/ balance problems/ with various shocks, tires etc. To give you an example, I put on Rancho 9000XL shocks on my 2004 Siverado 2500HD, plus My Ride controller. The most horrendous ride with the camper on and off the truck!!!!!!!! No matter what setting! Glad to see them go, despite the love afair of most of the positive reviews on this site. So there you go! Because you had a bad experience, don't tell everyone to jump ship on the Hankook's!

RE: tire ??? toyo vs hankook

All I can say, is don't tell people how great Hankook is, because they will be back ordered! I've used them on the last 3 vehicles over the last 5 years, and they seem to go for ever. On the Jeep Cherokee, that came with Badyears GSA's, I only got about 11,000 miles, switched to Coopers, and got a little over 6,000 miles. Switched to Hankook, and junked the Jeep with over 35,000 miles, and they were only half worn! I have them on my Jeep Wrangler, and they last so long, I don't even bother looking at the thread wear anymore. My truck came with Bridgestone Revo's, that are excellent, but noisy. When it comes time to replace them, quess what's going on?

RE: It finally happened!

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful replies! When we are on the road shopping, like at Wally world, even thought the rig fits in a regular spot, we always park far away, because I've read about this happening to T/C's. But in my wildest dreams, did I expect this to happen at a gas station! It could have been worse.

RE: It finally happened!

Sorry about your troubles. You might want to check with the station to see the event was caught on video. If so ask them to save it for you. Robert Thanks Robert, The trooper gave me a full report for my insurance co, incase there is some kind of damage. From what I understand, the NYS police will be going after her. She was in the car with another young women, and a baby in a car seat in the rear. She didn't look older than 16, and I think didn't speak English or have a drivers lic. AS far as the station video, I live about 85 miles away, but may give the station a call.

It finally happened!

Went down to eastern Long Island's North shore for a 4 night mini camping trip. We returned home yesterday. On the way home, we stopped at a rest area on the NYS thruway, for a pit stop, and to gas up. The DW was pumping the gas, because my back went out, and it was dificult for me to get in and out of the cab. All of a sudden, there is a loud bang, and I feel the truck shudder. I look at my right mirror, and see a car making contact with my right rear jack. My DW goes over to the women, and starts screaming to stop!!!!!!!! Bad back or no bad back, I jump out, and don't believe what I see. This "Driver", was not going to the gas island for gas, but leaving the station. Instead of leaving like a normal person, and go around the Islands, she tries fitting thru between my rig, and the car to the right at the next island, and there is not enough room. She is in contact with the jack, and in the process of pushing it in to the corner of the camper. She is going forward, and turning her wheel into the camper, instead of away. We are both screaming at her to stop, and she refuses to put her window down. Finally, when she realizes her efforts are not working, she listens to me, and I get her free of the camper. As this is all happening, I'm loudly telling her thru the window to stop, so we can exchange papers for insurance. As soon as she gets free, she takes off! I got her plate #, and called 911. A new York State trooper was there in 10 mins, to fill out a leaving the scene of a property damage report.( which is illegal in NYS) Anyway, I some what checked the jack. It seems straight, and the mounting brackets bolts seem tight, and it stills goes up and down, but I"m concerned about possible internal damage to the corner of the camper. If I didn't get to her in time, she surely would have ripped the jack off the camper!

fuel selector?

Did anyone ever have the fuel selector knob strip out on a dometic reefer? We got to the campsite last nite, and hooked up, and the dw switched it to a/c. This morning it was defrosted. It must of been on off all night. Now it just turns. We are camped in Greenport,NY, not to far from Eastend camper, a Lance dealer. The north fork of Long Island is beautiful.

RE: 1993 Lance Squire 4000

I need to know if a 1993 Lance Squire 4000 will fit in my truck ? I have a 2008 F-250 4-door shortbed . Will it work with the tailgate down ??? Please help me out, need to know before I purchase it. Thanks Brenda, Did you see the camper? If so did it have skirts in the rear left and right side, that are lower then the floor of the camper? If so, it is made for a short bed. You will have to take the tailgate off, and build a wooden platform to raise the camper about 3", so the cabover is clear of the truck cab. I did a search, and found the same year and model, and the picture showed it with skirts. So I think it was made for short bed. You could also call Lance and ask them. BTW, it's floor lenght is 9.6ft, and it weight is 2550lbs,dry. Good Luck.

RE: DTV gripe!!!

I have a simple solution to this OTA dilemma. When we camp, our first source of programming is re-writable DVD's loaded with movies and tv shows, that we bring from home. If we can get OTA, the only time we watch that is for the news, while we have breakfest. At home, every thing we watch is first recorded on our sat dvr. Who wants to watch commercials anyway? Get a DVD recorder, and your good to go. You can watch quality tv at your leisure!

RE: LCD TV/DVD Combo's HELP

Stay away from the Supersonic brand. I bought a 20" wide screen HD 720p, 1080i, DVD combo, 12volt/ac online, for $300. Very poor design, and quailty control. The first one, after using it for about an hour, in the DVD mode, developed a high pitched whistle, and and the audio dropped out. I just returned it for another, thinking it was an isolated problem. So they sent me another, and the same thing happened, but took about 5 hours of use, and to late to return. I think that the DVD drive motor is not properly shield, and the tv, audio amp section is picking this up. Plus the coax connector for ant imput keeps loosening up, and you have intermittent connection. This happened on both tv's. The tv section isn't too bad. I had to get a small portable DVD player, and plug it into the A/v inputs. That works fine. Pure garbage! BTW, beware they have several other brand names they go under.

RE: Help! Information Overload in picking a truck and camper.

Thankyou All!!! for giving me the Important Info on how to buy both camper and truck. Its amazing how a number of good people can make the difference in sorting out all the info that a person can get bogged down with. I have learned a tremendous amount from all of you who have posted and helped me. AND I do mean a tremendous amount!! Each of you added something to my knowledge that put the pieces together and now Im getting the big picture on how its done. Now I have to figure, if the camper extended out say 1 foot past the back truck bumper if I could still park in a regular parking space. Trying to figure out if the 1 foot inside the camper even makes a difference. As long as there is a shower and potty, I dont mind if its wet or dry. Looks like its time to go visit a few camper dealers tomorrow. Does anyone know if a used camper that was taken care of is just as good as a brand new one. I know with trucks that its a whole different world between new and used. Wow, so many decisions to make. Jeff, Let me tell you that it took me over 3 months on the internet to find the truck , and camper on the northeast, for a fair price, and reasonable driving distance. I found the camper, at an auth Lance dealer, about 100 miles from home, for about a 1/3 of the cost of a new one( they haven't changed that much) in mint condition, with a 30 day warranty. The truck was also found, that just came off a lease at a Chevy dealer, with 12 month GM Protection plan for less then half of a new one! Start looking now. It's going to take you time to find what you want! I did my homework, and did alot of reading on this, and other forums. But in the end, I'm very happy. We are leaving tomorrow, yet on another mini trip to the Libery Science center/ Ellis Island, and Statue Of Liberty camping trip. Good luck!
