RE: Top tier gasoline.

OK I apologize for not following the link in the link the OP posted. Of all those brands, only Mobil is available in my area.
I know for a fact that the tanker that delivers the Mobil Station also delivers Fast Trac and another independent located on the same street.
Yes, much of the fuel is delivered by the same truck to various vendors, but the additives are blended at delivery to the vendor's specifications so what leaves the nozzle can be much different than from the vendor down the street. It is also interesting that Chevron makes Techron "injection cleaner" that is already in Chevron, is also used as an additive by other vendors and can be added by you if top tier gas is not available.
Honestly, I think that if at least every third tank or so is top tier, you will be good.

RE: Top tier gasoline.

My F150 and many newer cars have direct injection engines and most of those recommend top tier gasoline. Since it shouldn't matter to the manufacturer other than warranty issues, I figure there is a good reason for the recommendation and use top tier gasoline most of the time. I made a note for my cell phone and pasted the list of top tier brands so it is at my finger tips.

RE: Compensation?

I received exceptional service and the service call was much longer than anticipated. Since he was with me for over and hour and a half, I asked about his compensation and found it was not adequate for the service I received so I gave him a nice tip which he tried to decline.

First Time Using Roadside Assistance

Near the end of a first long day of a month-long trip, we cut a tire on the TV and pulled to the side of the interstate near Erie, PA. Since I had just renewed the insurance for 3 years and were towing a fiver, we called Good Sam's. The tech showed up in 20 minutes, but while waiting, I unlock the truck's spare security lock, and I looked for the tire tools without success. The tech said they should be right under the back seat, but couldn't find them either. He removed the cut tire and we got to Firestone 10 minutes before closing. They mounted a new tire and back to the rig where the tech replaced the wheel and we were on our way. My heartfelt thanks to RA tech Nick Peterson for going above and beyond!
PS: A call to my dealer on Monday morning got the tire tools located under a tray that was under the back seat. They said that it wasn't the first call they got like that.

RE: Tri pod to help eliminate movement

The Steadyfast system works great. I just installed the front pair and it reduced movement so much that I haven't gotten around to installing the rear Steadyfast yet.

RE: Half Ton Fifth wheel advice...

Check out the May Trailer Life article on half-ton fivers:

I thought the Forest River Shasta Phoenix line looked pretty good.

RE: Half Ton Fifth wheel advice...

It will be hard to find a bunkhouse small enough to be H/T towable. That Forest River looks like it will sleep 6, but some privacy is lost.
I just saw that the Jayco Eagle HT line does have a bunkhouse model, so I stand corrected.

RE: Half Ton Fifth wheel advice...

Wow on the forest river!!!! Wow!!!!!
It is an almost identical floor plan to our Cougar 299RKS, but 2 feet shorter and 500-600 lbs lighter, and 400 lbs less pin weight. Very nice!

RE: Half Ton Fifth wheel advice...

Figure on adding about 250 lbs to the pin weight when loaded and 1200 lbs to the total weight. I finally weighed after a year and it was heavier than I thought, but it tows and handles well. 5000 miles towing so far.
The Jayco has a Reese Revolution pin box as an option. That eliminates any worries about hitting the back of the cab on a short bed.
We loved the Jayco Eagle 29.5RKS, but the 1700 lb pin weight scared me away. We found the Cougar High Country with the same floor plan and 300 lbs less pin weight. Still too heavy for my specs (the HD Payload package would have made it good), but the SuperSprings and Bilsteins make it ride well. Weight police: yeah, I know.

RE: 5er Newbie

If your only choice is a gas station with the islands perpendicular, I've found that there may be room to pull in from the building side giving you a straight exit out if you use the end island near the facility exit. This also keeps you from blocking the facility entrance. Make your turns wide to allow for the fiver tracking inside of your TV.
But I try to pick highway exits that have multiple gas stations so I have a selection to scope out.
Top off fuel whenever there is opportunity even if you are only down a quarter tank.

RE: Would you recommend a 5th wheel for me?

I never let my fuel level drop below 1/4 so I can check out fuel stops. I look for stations where you pull in parallel to the building, but if the only choice is perpendicular to the building than go between the building and the pumps so you are facing out. I have even seen Flying J's where the diesel pumps are easy, but the gas pumps not so much.
I select exits that have 3 or more gas station choices to better the chance of an easy in/out for fuel.

RE: Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

After a year, I finally weighed and was heavier than I thought. We were 2/3 full on the black tank at weigh in.
Steer Axle: 3480 -280
Drive Axle: 4560 +510
Trailer Axle: 7500
Gross Combined: 15540 -1560
Pin Weight: 1660 (1410 dry)
Although it doesn't change the sticker, I had installed SuperSprings and Bilstein HD shocks. Will definitely get the HD Payload option next time, but the rig pulls and handles well. I will also empty my basement and give everything there a critical eye, plus fill the rear fresh water tank, but none of that will make up for 500 lbs over, although dumping the waste tanks will help some.

RE: Would you recommend a 5th wheel for me?

Basic guideline
1/2 ton trucks not auitable for fifth wheel towing.
3/4 ton truck suitable for a fiver up to a maximumof 10,000 pounds GVWR
1 ton SRW suitable for fivers up to about 12,000 pounds GVWR
1 ton dually suitable for fivers up to about 16,000 GVWR
Anything heavier you really need more truck.
While there will be a lot of arguments on my numbers they are IMHO a good rule of thumb.
Remember you can never have too much truck, but there sure are a lot of can my truck tow this questions posted on the forums every year.
I would debate the first item if you get 1/2 ton with HD options (F150 with Max Tow and HD Payload) and get a true HT fiver like the smaller of the Jayco Eagle HT line, typically under 30' and a GVWR at 9K or less.
I am comfortably towing a fiver larger than that, but wouldn't generally recommend it as I should really have the HD Payload package to be within all limits. Next truck will have it.

RE: e-z sewer carrier

I just bought a carrier for my sewer and put it on my fifth wheel. I got a big problem, i go to put the sewer hose in and the stupid thing is too big to fit, so i go to take off the end fittings thinking that is it but no cigar. I found that the carrier is 5 inches and the hose without the fittings is 6. what do i do now? Can anybody help. Maybe i am doing something wrong.
All the sewer hose I've seen is 4" and fits in the bumper. The cheapest thing might be to buy new 4" hose.

Now for the all important Ann Landers questions, which way do you hang the roll? With the paper hanging in front or in the back? Ooops, look what we have started now... GPG
In the front unless you have a cat. :B

This will work if your don't mind spending the next 20 years at the gray bar hotel.
These are also handy for removing the C4 and using it to heat your C-rations.

RE: New Durango :)

Well so far I have elephant pads and JT Strong Arms on my list.
X-Chock down the road if needed.
Get a couple of bags of stack-able inter-locking leveling blocks to put under the tires on the low side and to use under the landing gear and stablizing jacks when necessary. As was pointed out, the less you extend landing gear and jacks, the more stable the RV. Ours was more stable when brand new, but has loosened up some so.....
I am in the process of installing the Steadyfast system on my fiver. Got the bars attached to the new front foot plate, and now for the fun part of drilling into the frame for mounting/locking hardware.

Based on weights and your truck capacity, I would stick with the Cougar.
