RE: Need Your Advice - 2002 Palomino Stampede S-15 Hybrid

Thanks Searfoss. We just got back from looking and the rig was not quite as clean as advertised. The rubber roof looked worn, and although no roof leaks were visable, I was still concerned. Also the owner bought the rig on the cheap due to the floor being damaged with a broken water pipe. Floor was replaced but I am always cautious once something like that happens....plus NADA shows it listing around 2800-3000 not the 5K he said he would take.
The search continues, and thanks for the advice.

Yes, this is the one I am going to look at this afternoon. Like a rare bird, these things must not have a large population.

Need Your Advice - 2002 Palomino Stampede S-15 Hybrid

Hey gang,
Still on the lookout for our next adventure in the great outdoors. We have looked at several pop ups...we have downsized from a class A rig. So far we have not found the right rig yet.
Today we are going to look at a 2002 Palomino Stampede S-15. It is the 15 foot hybrid trailer with a King and a Full bed pull out, kitchen, bath etc. It is being sold by a private owner.
I can not for the life of me find out anything on my searchs about this rig. Even NADA skips it in its valuations. Don't know why.
Thought I would try here. Found one old post during a search from 2002 about a guy buying one, but thats it.
He is asking $5800.00, and my challange is I am going in unprepared on pricing of these rigs. So if you have any intel or knowledge or even just a guess, let me know your thoughts. We go look at it later this afternoon.
His ad says it is in perfect condition for whatever that is worth. We will see!!!
Thanks in advance!
Keith

RE: High Ground Clearance

What would preclude you from buying an inexpensive pop-up (500 dollar range) and experimenting on lifting it yourself? Maybe a longer axel, lift kit, and some larger knobbies. Sounds like a fun project if you have a mechanical skill set, and would probably be much cheaper than paying 18K for a new off road popup.

RE: New to the Pop Up World of Camping, But not a Noob Here!

That makes sense Mike. We had hoped to be camping this weekend, but you still have to be prudent in the search. It took me 10 months to find my class A. With pop-ups the real good ones sell fast of course, and where we live it usually requires a trip out of the area to see one.
We have a major backyard renovation ongoing, so we will sit and wait for a while and hopefully fall brings some good clean rigs.

Moving From this Forum to the Folding Trailer Site

Hey gang, first off, thanks go out to all the great help and advice I have received on this forum...there are truly some great knowledgeable people here.
We made a decision to sell the 99 knowledgeable we owned for a few years, and after a quick run on craigslist both the rig and toad sold within days. For those of you concerned with resell in this economic market, we got 2000 dollars above average NADA retail WITH options included. So we were extremely happy. Our rig was clean, serviced and ready to roll. Out toad sold within in a week as well. The internet is a wonderful place!
So this week my wife suggested we look at pop ups, since we only camp a few times a year. So Tuesday I am meeting a gentleman from Dallas with a clean 99 Jayco. I know it is a totally different adventure, yet it is still an adventure, and for us it seems right...and that is all that counts to us.
So I am moving boards, yet will pop in to check on everyone from time to time. Enjoy the road, and once again thanks for all the help!

RE: New to the Pop Up World of Camping, But not a Noob Here!

Thanks for the advice kknowlton, I will give it the inspection and check the structure. He did say that he had to patch 2 spots in the screen he repaired but claims everything else has been meticually serviced. He seems like a straight shooter, and as a former LEO, I try to do a good job of sizing people up. We will see, but it seems like a good deal so far.
Thanks hiker for the welcome, I will work at getting caught up on the informational posts.

New to the Pop Up World of Camping, But not a Noob Here!

Hey folks,
We made the decision a few months ago to sell our class A and thanks to craigslist we were able to move the MH and Toad to new owners in less than 1 week! And in light of this economy we were able to get within 500 dollars of our asking price, which was NADA with options....so we feel lucky, and the couple who bought it got a great rig. The power of the internets is amazing.
So this week the wife says, hey we should buy a pop-up like we considered years ago, and I said, you bet, sounds like fun. Of course our friends think we are crazy but that never has never influenced us before. Off to research I went, looked at new and the used ones on ebay and craigslist.
Last night I found a super 99 Jayco with a dining slideout from a guy in Dallas. It looks to be in excellent shape and he seems to be a stand up fellow, so I am meeting the chap in Hot Springs to do the deal Tuesday.
I will be counting on you guys to bring me up to speed on this wonderful style of camping and I look forward to helping you in any way I can!
Thanks,
Keith

RE: Motorhome Differential - What???

Touchy subject for me. Mine is being done as we speak for the second time in 6 months. Had it done in Ohio while on a trip by a Ford Dealership who screwed it up royally...it was worse when they completed it. Couldn't stay and hash it out so headed home.
Now I have my local Ford truck dealer doing the work (under the warranty from the work done in December) and I know it will be done right....he is a truck specialist...and stated that the dealer in Ohio did a horrible job.
So we should have our rig back in the next week or so, hopefully with the job done right.

RE: Calling From Canada

We use the MagicJack. We are headed to Mexico Friday for a weeks vacation in Playa Del Carmen and the MagicJack will be going with us. We will set it up in the hotel room attached to our laptop and with high speed internet access, we call free to the US and vice versa. All this for 60 dollars for 5 years of unlimited LD, local and a whole host of other free options such as VM and call waiting.
How can you beat that?

RE: Just got back from the Sacramento RV Show

We attended a smaller RV show last month in Springfield, Mo. While there we spoke to the sales manager from a dealer in Carthage that we have visited several times over the past few years. He was not happy to be there but felt he needed to since his competition was there. He said after all was said and done (fees, wages, transporting the many units) his 4 day show would cost the dealership 20K.
We went on a Friday, attendance was light. Last week we ran into him at the dealership and he said they sold ZERO units. The dealership parked next to them said they sold 8 units, but salespeople there told him they didn't know of selling a single unit. Camping World also said they sold out all their show inventory....but that was a suspect statement according to my contact. A lot of disinformation being passed around it seems!
So I agree, things have changed, and hopefully some of these companies survive to support our dream!

RE: Cummins 360 vs. 400

I doubt you would notice a difference between a 360 and a 400. I have a 350 cat in mine and it is plenty powerful. Besides, horsepower is meanless, torque is the specification you look at.
Ignore the silly advise about extended warranties being worthless, since he obviously doesn't own one. I got a 4 year on my coach and after two months it has almost paid for itself. There are a lot more instances on this board of people who actually own an extended warranty and are happy with them than people who don't own one and badmouth them. They just don't know what they are talking about.
Owned one, got out of the deal due to the company going belly up, and got my money back.....so I think I qualify as an informed consumer. Also challenged the failure to pay on the first item they refused and was awarded payment using an attorney. Before you fire at me, have your gun loaded.

RE: Best Class A for $20-25K

We bought a 99 Seabreeze from National with a V10 about a year and a half ago. It was a one owner, and they gave us the entire outfitted rig with everything from a weber grill, to all the interior and exterior accessories you could imagine and would have to purchase to travel and camp. We also got in the deal their toad, a 2002 PT Cruiser with a brand new aux brake system he just bought for 1200 dollars. Paid 30K for the whole setup.
You should be able to find what you want. We had to travel 1200 miles to find ours in Daytona. You are in the backyard of many many RV'ers..... Good Luck!!!

RE: Cummins 360 vs. 400

Yes you can purchase an after market "warranty". However if you search here you will find many instances where people were disappointed with these policies.
I would get the Tiffin hands down. Having met Bob Tiffin, and having him tell me that should I purchase an out of warranty unit, that all I had to do was bring it by his factory and he would make it right, my next purchase will be a Tiffin.
Good luck on your decision!

RE: Gelcoat Finish Help

The best way to keep the finish looking good is to sand it down, apply a primer, and have full body paint.
I toiled with two fiberglass units and now have FBP. I'd never go back. It always looks good and requires almost no care at all.
Paul
Paul,
How much did the procedure cost? I have heard of folks taking their rigs to Mexico for full body paint jobs that seem to be very reasonable, but would struggle paying a lot for my 99.
