RE: Use of air bags

stable loads in place of the stock overload spacers should solve your issue and bring the overload springs back into play X2... I use my air bags (separate lines) to just get the Stable Loads kissing the overloads. Sway was virtually eliminated as opposed to just airbags and stock overload bumpers. No change in ride height or air pressure but the overloads now work almost like an extra sway bar.

RE: Idea for camp trailer / TC storage platform?

I found a used four wheel farm wagon running gear, welded a half dozen 2" square tubes longitudinally for a deck. Works great at 3-4 mph and easy to move. I deliberately kept it as low as possible so you can't cut the wheels as sharp as you would on a hay wagon. I store my Lance 845 on it with 70-80% of the weight on the trailer and the rest on the jacks. Don't have to worry about stressing he floor when using it as a lifeboat after storms etc. http://www.killbrosequip.com/runninggears/

RE: GPR in Ford-Fe50 Powerstroke

Mark_Be My bad. I didn't know there was a difference until I opened this thread. So now I guess that the $155 quoted price for a replacement is not out of line. Also now I know that a GPM may not be as susceptible to getting stuck as a GPR. By the way, is the GPM (see, I'm getting smarter) also located on the valve cover on the passenger side, and is it easier to get at it from above, or below? Dave It is easier (as if reaching anything on a Powerstroke is easy)from the top. It will be on the right valve cover. Both the 7.3 and 6.0 have a decorative cover over the HPOP that can hide things a bit. It can help to remove but you will still have two 10mm studs sticking up to stab you. Tousley Ford has GLOW PLUG MODULE ASSY #YC3Z-12B533-AA GLOW PLUG MODULE ASSY for $116.12. Hope that helps.

RE: GPR in Ford-Fe50 Powerstroke

If I read your signature correctly you have a 6.0 which is different than the 7.3. In mid 2003 Ford switched to the 6.0 engine. Instead of a 4-pole relay controlled by the PCM, the glow plug system contains an actual module. This module is in the same location but has more wires. The GPCM has one output wire for each cylinder it still contains the B+ wire, the vehicle power wire and the pink/orange to energize it. As far as I know there is not a 6.0 made that has a "relay". Here is a link to an illustration http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/attachments/f24/15030d1346535037-p0683-excurnsion-gpcm.jpg All Powerstrokes need good strong batteries and a good starter to start. They won't start without sufficient cranking speed and the HPOP won't build enough pressure to fire the injectors. Any chance you are leaving your TC plugged into the truck? Or have a brake controller and leave a trailer connected. Make sure the courtesy light under the hood shuts off. Even a LED will drain batteries given enough time. Diesel O'rings is a great resource for service parts, filters etc. Good luck

RE: would you switch

well I have talk to a few people at work both have 2000 & 01 and they have both had to rebuild tranny with not alot of miles on them OK...they had to rebuild the trans. WHAT were they doing and HOW do they drive. The 4R100 transmission is a pretty reliable unit as long as it is not abused. You can overheat one easily because the cooler is fairly small. Once you top 210 degrees you just killed the trans. Folks that don't know when to let off the loud peddle or don't have a trans temp gauge will have failures. If you do get the rig put a set of pillar gauges on it immediately. I'd suggest EGT & Boost gauges as well. The "gauge" on the dash is worthless as by the time the needle moves the damage is done. Ford offers a heavy duty factory reman with a good warranty. Put a trans cooler from a 6.0 in it and that truck could out live you. X2 on the spare CPS.

RE: GPR in Ford-Fe50 Powerstroke

If it is a California spec truck you have a GPM, Glow Plug Module. The rest of the US got GPRs. Not the usual culprit for battery drain. If you need Ford OEM parts Tousley Ford in Minnesota has great prices and great folks to work with. I can get parts from MN to Alabama cheaper than driving 5 miles to the local stealership.

RE: Moving (Jed Klampet style) with TC?

The trailer thing should work fine however I'd suggest going with a larger trailer and loading IT to the max rather than loading the TC. I've got a 16' with brakes on both axles and don't know how we lived without it. Get Torflex axles on the trailer as they ride better and make for a lower deck. The only downside is that with a long wheelbase CC truck it will get ahead of you backing up and you can "catch up"). A 20' actually tows better but that extra length sure adds to the hassle factor for general use if you keep it. Run the TC with minimal fluids and move as much of the TC accessory weight to the trailer. Balance your trailer as well as you can and still have 10% on the tongue and it shouldn't wag. Most factory tires on cargo trailers are pretty poor quality (Carlisle)and none of them built for sustained speed over 55. Carry at least one and maybe two spares, chocks, and a good jack. Make them easy to get to. If you have a tuner I'm hoping you have gauges for EGT and trans temp. Keep those temps low. The 5R110 trans is tough but you get much above 200 and you'll kill it.

RE: mobility scooters

For a year or so before my mother-in-law passed my wife had a reciever monuted lift on her car to car her mom's power chair. Found it on Ebay and worked like a champ. Drive on, drive off. I had to move it one time and used my front reciever on my f250 4X4 and I'm sure it would have done well there for the long haul. We still have it and thinking about converting it to carry a generator. I believe the brand was Harmar. Unless you put a full cover on the scooter it should not affect cooling except in AZ in August.

RE: Soft brake pedal 08 F 350 Diesel

The brake booster is "driven" off the power steering pump as a diesel doesn't produce vacuum for a conventional brake booster. If you PS pump is getting tired you might notice your steering gets very heavy under braking or if you have your foot on the pedal and try to turn at low speed. I found this on the DieselStop forum..."There was a leak identified on some of the early 6.4's. It dealt with one of the lines between the power steering pump and hydroboost system if I remember correctly. If you have a Job 1 2008, it could be the problem."

RE: Strange Interaction Between 4WDSwitch and A/C

DG...You are the MAN! Heck...and I thought it was a pain in the Kazoo to trace the lines with +1 lenses. More power to you! Wish I was around the corner. My folks retired in Monterey so I miss the left coast and would work for beer...OK, if you can get that fantastic lady of your's to help you out, here are couple ways to approach the challenge. None of the tests involves heavy lifting, maybe a bit of dirt. (1)You don't need the engine running for the PVH to "buzz". (KEOF) Key On, Engine Off. Turn dash mounted knob to FWD. You should hear a buzz within a few seconds. Your bride can repeat this as you home in on the location. Sorry but I dumped my '04 6.0 for a '02 7.3 and the location may be a bit different but likely 2/3 of the way back towards the firewall on the passenger side in the engine bay resonably high up. The PVH is roughly rectangular, smaller than a tennis ball. rigidly mounted and will have an electrical connector and two (perhaps three) vacuum lines connected. 1.5" X 1.5" x 2". It should buzz for about 20-30 second and then the Four Wheel Drive light should come on. Cycle it a second time to turn the light off and dis-engage the hubs. In case of no buzz it is the PVH. Maybe a fuse but can't tell you which one. Check fuse then replace PVH if required. If not. Move on to(2)If the lines feel stiff it is very possible for them to develope cracks which bring us back to eliminating the hubs as the culprit. As I recall as a kid growing up in Arcadia the smog and sun would deteriorate rubber and it would be hard as a rock. The Mighty Vac pump is easy to use and the two of you can work together. The vacuum line going to the knuckle (parralel) with the brake line "should" pull off the barbed fitting on the knuckle. I'll bet your tactile senses are highly developed and you can show your lady which line to tug on. If it cracks or breaks that is not a big deal and easily fixable and is a very probable and cheap fix. Use the hand Vac pump to draw down the Hubs one at a time by sliding the hose from the Vac pump over the barb. Your sensitive ears might hear the hub "click" as it engages and dis-engages. As Elmer Fudd said "be Vewy Vewy Quiet". If both Hubs check out then it is likely the lines. If not then it is one or the both of the hubs. As much as I'd like to suggest you rebuild the hubs on your own, it is a big job with large tools and heavy parts. Dang, I wish I lived closer. You or your wife can PM me and I'll try to talk you through it as best I can.

RE: Strange Interaction Between 4WDSwitch and A/C

I forgot to mention that ANYONE with a Ford needs to know about Tousley Ford and their online parts system. They are always helpful if you have a question and I get better customer service and a more competetive price including shipping from Minnesota to my door in Harvest,Alabama than I do from the dealership 7 miles away. You can shoot them an e-mail with the info on your vehicle to verify the correct part number.

RE: Strange Interaction Between 4WDSwitch and A/C

X5? on a vacuum leak in your ESOF (Electronic Shift On the Fly) system. This usually fairly easy to diagnose. If your Ford stealership is as disreputable as my local one, they will charge you out the waazooo for basic diagnostics. Running parallel to the flexible brake hose going to the front calipers is a rubber vacuum line. Go get yourself a Mighty-Vac manual vacuum pump. $30 at Harbor Freight. Disconnect the line at the knuckle and connect the pump and pull it down to 15hg. If it leaks down on either side you have a leak in the autolock hub. If you have the time and good mechanic skills this is not too bad. Heavy and time consumming though. If it holds vacuum, then start working back up the lines. Under the hood on the right side is the PVH (pulse vacuum hub-lock solenoid). Turn the key on and you should hear a buzzing sound when you turn the 4WD dial. Once you find it tap into the lines going to the hubs. Again this should hold vacuum. If not, you have a bad vacuum line. Next check the PVH itself to see if it pulls a vacuum. This might take two people as the vacuum “signal” is short duration. The PVH only pulls in for a short time. A long pulse for lock and a short pulse for un-lock (or vice versa). You can check the PVH by ohming the connections. It may still buzz but it won’t pull the right amount of vacuum or it has an internal leak. In my case it was a bad PVH. You should have 45-55 ohms across each coil. I had 65 ohms across two out of three pins. Terminal 3 is common, so you should have basically the same resistance when measuring across terminals 1 and 3 and across 2 and 3. I believe the latest part number is 7C3Z9H465A. If you have a Powerstroke you need to get familiar with the Dieselstop.com forums. There is a ton of information that can save you a bunch of money.

RE: Lance 9000 Project

Looks like you are doing a very nice job. The basic Kreg pocket jig runs maybe $40 at Lowes and makes cabinet face frames a breeze as well.

RE: Lance 9000 Project

More power to you for taking on such a big job. As a fellow Lance owner I love seeing what one looks like with the skin off. It also scares the $%^& out of me thinking about what I might find if I really started digging around. Since you are not trying to build to a price point like the factory you have the opportunity to do the little detail stuff like using stainless steel fasterners, gluing all the joints etc. A great tool for really tightening up butt joints is a Kreg pocket jig. That and some exterior contruction adhesive and your structure will as stiff as welded aluminum. I'm game to tear into almost anything as long as I have a fair idea how it went together in the first place. Keep up the photos and the great descriptions. Good luck.

RE: Ford bed sides are too dang high!

The weight of the camper is spread over 4608 square inches. On an 1100lb camper, that's roughly 1/4lb per square inch, a little over 34lbs per square foot. Empty beer cans would hold the camper up. A TC on a 6 1/2 foot bed @ 4' wide equals 3744in/sq. 4500lb÷3744in/sq = 1.2psi. We live at 16 psi air pressure. 10 feet deep in the swimming pool you are at 4.3psi. Still not much.

RE: 4x4 may not need it often, BUT .......

I got some good advice 30 plus years ago when I lived in Montana regarding 4 wheel drive. Stay in 2 wheel drive until you can't go any further, then it is time to use 4 wheel drive to get home.

RE: Lots of locks = lots of key no longer

American brand (now part of Master)locks can be re-keyed easily by any locksmith to your favorite Master key. The best way is to keep one of your original Master brand keys pristine with the number stamped on the head and any decent locksmith can cut duplicates by entering that number code in their machine. The Master loack I started keying off of 18 years ago is still in service but showing it's age. My first Americans are still smooth as butter. On a related matter if you have your original entry door key write down the number so you can order replacements. If you lose your key and you can still gain entry you can remove the entrance door lockset and get the key code off the paper tag stuck on the back. You can order duplicates from the mfg. for a buck or two. There are only about 30 cut paterns so not THAT secure.

RE: Wind Turbine project

After 7 pages I was getting tired of reading about homebrewed wind generators. The boating world has been using them for years and a wide selection can found on-line at West Marine. They are weatherproof, voltage regulated, self governing, some fold up and come complete with mounting systems. I got another project idea. I could get a Honda engine, a 120V gen head, form up sheet metal and then figure out how to make it really small and quiet...Ooops...somebody already did that too.

RE: Ford Diesels 6.0, & 6.4 Looking to buy heard problems?

By '05 & '06 Ford had worked out alot of the bugs with the 6.0 but still not perfect. I bought my '04 6.0 new off the lot and for 4.8 years it was a wonderful truck. Pulled like a locomotive. THEN the EGR shed coke particles that wiped out the turbo impeller. Because I didn't use it as a daily driver the VGT turbo vanes were stuck as well. All covered under warranty with a 12 month warranty on the new parts. 13 months later turbo disintigrated again taking the intercooler with it. NO CHIP, NO TUNER and driven like I planned to keep it for life. $4,500 repair bill and Ford and the Ford dealer wouldn't help a bit! Yes, they can be made more reliable and I considered doing all the mods...EGR/EGR cooler delete, ARP studs, etc but I just could'nt bring myself to drop another $4,000 into that truck. Sold it, and bought a '02 with 7.3. Louder, slower, weaker transmission but I trust it. Look for used diesels in California as their smog laws are effectivly driving older diesel pickups out of the state and the cost to retrofit is more than vehicle value.
